Description:

About this item:

Inspire a lifelong passion for science with these physics, chemistry, and biology experiments for kids—all using common household tools and ingredients!

In
Kitchen Science Lab for Kids, mom and scientist Liz Lee Heinecke presents 52 family-friendly labs that introduce fundamental scientific principles in a fun and accessible format.

Following
clear, photo-illustrated step-by-step instructions, have fun exploring:

  • Microbiology by growing your own microbe zoo on a homemade petri plate.
  • Rocket science by making and launching bottle rockets, using water and a bike pump.
  • Physics—marshmallow slingshots serve as a lesson on the transformation of energy and an egg-throwing experiment demonstrates the law of motion.
  • And so much more! Other great projects explore the exciting science of crystals, static electricity, acidification, and solar energy.

Along with the experiments, you’ll find:

  • Tips for keeping a science journal.
  • Suggestions for taking your experimentation to the next level with “Creative Enrichment.”
  • Accessible explanations of “The Science Behind the Fun.”
  • Safety tips and hints.

The experiments can be used as part of a homeschool curriculum, for family fun, at parties, or as educational activities for groups. Many of the experiments are
safe enough for children as young as toddlers and exciting enough for older kids, so families can discover the joy of science together.

The popular
Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, clay, geology, math, and even how to create your own circus—all authored by established experts in their fields.

Each lab contains a
complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels.

Review

“Known to most as The Kitchen Pantry Scientist, LizHeinecke is an avid blogger, NASA Earth Ambassador, Bacteriologist and former medical researcher. But to her three children, she’s just known as “mom,” an enthusiastic and curious parent who loves to have as much fun with science as they do.” — A Bullseye View, the blog for Target

“While technically not a cookbook (although it does have edible electromagnetic waves), this book celebrates the kitchen and food as a source of science magic... If you have kids, or just are a kid, this book is a must-have.” — Minneapolis City Pages

“Heinecke takes kids—and their parents—through the step-by-step process of scientific method, with easy-to-follow instructions and photos.” — Omaha World-Herald

About the Author

Liz Lee Heinecke has loved science since she was old enough to inspect her first butterfly. After working in molecular biology research for 10 years and earning her master’s degree, she left the lab to kick off a new chapter in her life as a stay-at-home mom. Soon, she found herself sharing her love of science with her three kids as they grew, chronicling their science adventures on her KitchenPantryScientist website. Her desire to share her enthusiasm for science led to regular television appearances, an opportunity to serve as an Earth Ambassador for NASA, and the creation of an iPhone app. Her goal is to make it simple for parents to do science with kids of all ages, and for kids to experiment safely on their own. Liz graduated from Luther College and received her master’s degree in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the author of Kitchen Science Lab for Kids, Kitchen Science Lab for Kids: Edible Edition, Outdoor Science Lab for Kids, STEAM Lab for Kids, Sheet Pan Science, and Little Learning Labs: Kitchen Science for Kids. Her namesake series, The Kitchen Pantry Scientist, pairs illustrated biographies with engaging hands-on activities inspired by their work. The books in that series include: Chemistry for Kids, Biology for Kids, Physics for KidsMath for Kids, and Ecology for Kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining education for the whole family

My kids love this book! We are able to do activities as a family - the experiments are fun and for the most part very easy to complete. It allows us to foster the kids' love of learning in a way that is creative and hands on and also allows us parents to teach our kids about science from an early age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent creative science experiment book for all ages

This book is so cool. I first saw it in line at lowes actually. I peeked through it as I waited for the guy in front of me to apparently purchase half the store including 99 single screws, so I had a minute or 20 free. I loved it immediately checked Bolo who had it for . Really cool projects for all ages! This is going to help when my kids are old enough to do the science fair too. There are great instructions and there are even pictures so it really helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks like fun!

I homeschool my children. My 6 year has been begging to do science experiments. I was browsing Bolo and ran across Kitchen Science Lab for Kids and bought it because the reviews were good. Even though we have not completed the first experiment, I am impressed with the book for several reasons. 1. The book is divided into units, with a few experiments per unit. I like this because it allows you, the parent, to review the same concept a few weeks in row. 2. Each unit begins with a simple explanation, which is helpful for explaining the unit to your child. 3. Each experiment in the book has fun pictures. 4. The author encourages the child to keep a science journal. 5. The supplies can all be found on your weekly grocery or Target trip. I am looking forward to beginning our experiments. I really think my children will learn a lot through the hands on experiments and summarizing their findings in a journal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet to try, but looks fun

J.J. · December 5, 2014

We've yet to try the book as it's a gift for our son (5 yr. birthday coming up) but after looking through quite a few of the pages I'm certain he will love it. He loves to help and explore and what a fun way to get us all together to do something new and incorporate some learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun experiments!

K.A. · July 29, 2018

Fun & interesting book! The experiments are simple enough for my 5 year olds to do, (with some assistance), but still interesting enough that older kids want to do them too. I teach a kitchen science camp & these fit right in with what I do. Several kids loved going through the book & picking out more experiments to try at home. I loved seeing them get so excited about science as they flipped pages. Definitely a good book to have for any little scientist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun introduction to the kitchen

A.C. · January 20, 2021

We ordered this for our niece. It is an introduction to the kitchen and cooking. It's basically a fun cookbook for kids with the food science explained. I think this has been updated because a 2017 review says it has some outdated recipes that require 35 mm film cans and ours does not. 2018 reviews mention misprints in the page numbers and the one we ordered does not have that issue either. We also ordered STEAM Lab and Outdoor Science and our 11 year old niece is super excited to try the experiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, fun experiments

E.G. · May 11, 2020

I like the experiments in this book and the explanation provided. It was easy to find the list of materials. It would be nice to have the target age written down for each experiment but if you read the experiment description, it’s pretty straight forward to figure out

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't get the Kindle version

L.G. · December 30, 2015

This book has some great ideas that are easy and simple to do. I bought this on the recommendation of another mom. I just wish I had bought the paperback instead of the Kindle edition because you can't print from Kindle and I don't really want to have my tablet out amidst eruptions and the like.

Got to buy it

Great book!

My daughter loves cooking and science, this book is the perfect blend of these two. With clear pictures and instructions she is able to read and follow along at 8 years old.

Coole Ideen für Kids

k. · December 12, 2016

granddaughter loves it
