About this item:

2012 Reprint of 1958 New York Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This is an English translation of the oldest known cookbook in existence. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great layout. Good notes. Good index.

I love the layout of this book. You can get the recipes free from various sources but having the Latin on one page and an English translation on the facing page makes this edition special. Most of the other versions I’ve found are either single language translations with no notes on how the translation was arrived at or digital scans. This edition has fairly extensive notes and having a physical edition on decent paper that is not just a scan is worth it. Add to that an index that is actually useful and this is a great book to add to your library.

Bought as a gift for a history buff who enjoyed reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool book of recipes

J.H. · April 28, 2014

We got this for my son's Silk road project on Mustard. We wanted to make the "original" mustard for everyone to try. Since then, we have tried a number of recipes in this book to see what food was like so long ago. I have to say that there are some very interesting ideas and recipes in this book and there are some we would find disgusting by todays standards. Either way, we love it and will keep trying the ones we think we will like as long as we can find the ingredients.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now, let's see...what's for dinner...

Staggering array of menus, some of which you can duplicate, and others are beyond current capabilities. Either way it's fun reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Romans knew how to cook.

J.F. · November 7, 2019

I love reading cookbooks for pleasure. I also love ancient history. This book has both. It confirms my belief that the thing that makes us different from the Romans is the passage of time. Their cooking is very much like ours. After all, where did our knowledge come from anyway?

Fascinating book that provides an interesting look into the ancient world of the Roman diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting

Excellent look into Roman daily life (at least that of the privileged classes). Interesting to see that so many ingredients and cooking techniques are similar to contemporary cuisine's. Tried a couple of recipes and they were pretty easy to follow, just had to guess some of the amounts. Good read.

good

Fascinating exploration of another world of food!

I liked the Latin/English translation - excellent!I would have liked a bit more information about some of the more obscure foods that Apicius used in his recipes - having some idea of good modern substitutes would be great as that ... obscurity ... makes some recipes problematic. However, I generally found them interesting - some types of things I never dreamed of trying that have turned out to be very good.

Great ideas for cooking

A must if you are into roman cooking

J.F. · August 18, 2021

This book was written in 1957. That means that is plain text. Apart of that, anything else is possitive. The two authors did not only translated the original text from Apicius, but also try to cook almost all the recipes. They explain you everything about sauces, condiments, cooking processes and so on. I am reaaaally happy with this book.

Love it
