5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Resource!
Love Cassie Stephens and her wealth of knowledge in the art room. She's fun and economical and unafraid to share great ideas, tips, tricks, and all the in-betweens. This book is a good little resource for adding fiber projects to the art classroom!
5.0 out of 5 stars The book I wish I'd always had.
A few years ago I accidentally agreed to teach a weaving and fiber arts after-school club at one of the buildings where I taught preschool (I was definitely not sober when I replied to the office manager's 4th email asking staff to volunteer their after-school club ideas and I hadn't learned not to check work emails on the weekends yet). I woke up the next morning with a feeling of panic and dread because now I had to plan nine "fiber arts" sessions and I only had two ideas. It took a lot of trial and error, and overcomplicated cardboard looms with chopsticks glued on to raise the warp away from the board, and chaos, and kids cutting their pieces of yarn from the middle of the skein, and "weaving is boring," but eventually we found our groove and wet-felting day was "the best day" of one student's life, because the wool smelled just like his uncle's barn. Weaving in the round, using Chinet paper plates was the most popular thing we did, and it should've been the first project instead of the last. What I'm trying to say is that I struggled to teach weaving and fiber arts to a group of kids, and it was messy and chaotic, but we got through it somehow and I haven't volunteered to teach it since, even though it was a lot of fun. This book makes me want to run back to that building and do it again, only better this time because there are INSTRUCTIONS! and helpful ADVICE! and ways of weaving I'd never thought to do before, and gorgeous little hand-stitched pillow projects, and finger knitting and spool knitting and Ojos de Dias (PRO TIP: If your students come with parents attached, get the parents making God's Eyes and they will stay busy all day). This book is amazing and so inspiring. Get one and make stuff!
5.0 out of 5 stars So many great projects
There are more projects than I think I have time for. It is an amazing resource and I have so many plans for my elementary art classroom now after looking through this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
Cassie is amazing. I was waiting to put in my supply order for school until I got the book. I ordered 2 accidentally but considered it a happy accidents because this book is just so full of amazing projects and ideas I figured I would share it with someone and give them my extra copy. My friend LOVED it of course. There are so many projects and ideas on it-AND even if you have never done any projects like the ones in the book Cassie has you covered because the first part goes over IN DEPTH what all the supplies are and how/what they can be used for and why! Thanks Cassie!
5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for the art room.
What an amazing book for anybody who wants to incorporate more fiber arts into their art curriculum or even a parent who wants to create with their children. Anything that Cassie Stephens creates or is involved in does not disappoint. Cassie has inspired me as an art teacher and has shown me how to continue sharing my love of art with my students. Fiber arts are a big part of my own life so to see a book that has so many great ideas that are easy, creative and such a great outcome makes me happy. Thank you Cassie again for such a wonderful tool for my art room.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good lesson plans for kids' fiber arts projects
The information provided indicated that "Stitch and String Lab for Kids leads children, step by step, through a huge range of sewing and fiber art projects." More accurately, it leads adults through the steps they would need to teach children to successfully tackle the 40 projects in the book, which is an important distinction. I would not, for instance, leave my 6 or 9 year old grands with the materials and book, and let them have at it, even though they're above average readers and love art, these are definitely lesson plans for teaching, and I think they would enjoy many of the projects with the direction and assistance of an adult who feels competent in fiber arts. These are interesting projects which I wish my art teachers or scout leaders had access to when I was a child. I would have enjoyed them immensely.
5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Art Teachers!
If you teach art to kids- elementary, middle or high school you need this book. It looks small but it is mighty. Stitch and String Lab for Kids contains more than 40 project ideas including step by step instruction covering sewing, weaving, string art, felting, dyeing fabric, embroidery, clothespin dolls...a comprehensive guide to all things fiber arts. The projects can be easily used for whole group teaching, TAB philosophy classes, or independent study. This is clearly a labor of love, well researched and designed by Cassie Stephens, who has unofficially mentored thousands of art teacher through her blog posts and podcasts. Don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic! Great inspiration and doable crafts
My 7-year-old son fell in love with this book immediately. He has been inspired to create and sew and finger knit. He keeps bookmarks in the pages, he loves it so much. The pictures and directions are easy to follow. We are having so much fun with this.

Excellent Creative ideas for kids
Book arrived in perfect condition and I have used it many times. It has some fun ideas to keep little hands busy.
Great book if you’re a monkey
How did anyone write a good review for this book? So disappointed. Not even a child would be happy with the end result of any of these half hearted projects. Even the pom-poms were an inferior way of making pom-poms. There really should be a way of seeing inside these books before buying! Truly pathetic.
