I love ceramics that comes with texture and warmth. This book will help me to have more knowledge and technics to explore at the ceramic classes I go to. 5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
Hilda is an ‘Instagram friend’, and the OG of carving clay. So much of my work is inspired by her. This book is simply amazing - beautiful photographs, and thorough explanations that cover so many different techniques and styles. It’s an absolute treasure in my ceramics library.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures but carving not as much as expected & spends time on wheel work, too
This book has lots and lots of pictures. It is is easy to read and what they show is often very clear. The book first goes over types of clay and then shows you the tools you use for carving or sgraffito. After that it shows you how to build the basic forms (mainly on the wheel) and then how to carve different designs. Some of the carving sections are very slow and methodically detailed. (Which I love!) And then there are pages which just show the end product as examples of what you could do. I found this a tad disappointing as there were a couple of texturing and carving photos/tiles where I wasn't exactly sure how they were made. In those cases I wish they had shown actual instruction. Also it seems that the patterns need more precision and using a ruler or making guide would help making them more evenly placed. Another thing is that this book has many photos dedicated to wheel work and not carving. It does not really go over how to how to hand build basic shapes so people without a wheel or with less experience making shapes maybe limited to tiles or slumped shapes like bowls.Yes, this is about carving but it is should be titled Sgraffito and Wheel Work instead. It is a solid book with beautiful pictures and the price is good for what you get but the actual carving instructions do not fill up most of the book and some buyers might be disappointed with the 'lean' carving content. Therefore, going through this book is very fast if you are only interested in ideas for carving. However, what the author does go over in sgraffito is done very well.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best carving techniques I’ve seen!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter The Potter Loves This Bookj
My daughter is a potter. She has her own studio and wheel. She is very creative and loves to do everything with clay from molding to wheel work. She also carves a lot.WHAT IS THIS BOOK LIKE?This book is a great book for motivation. It is hard cover and has lots of photos. The topics in this explore a lot of different textures for clay that you might be working on. There is basic information in the beginning with pictures of tools to have, glazes, types of clay to use, and other basics.PROJECTSWhat she especially likes is the project section. Not only does this book describe an idea, but gives specific project instructions with photos to guide you through an actual project that uses each technique so you can discover your own take on each one.The instructions include a finished photo, steps along the way of forming as well as every other step you will need from slip to glazing and carving, etc. If you are pictorally oriented, this book will be right up your alley.ANYTHING TO CHANGE?One thing that my daughter mentioned that she wished this book had was a spiral binding to make it easy to refer to in the studio. When your hands are fill of clay, you can not be having pages flip around. Spiral bound would be easier to stay open on the table.THE BOTTOM LINEIf you are at all interested in expanding your surface texture techniques with clay, this book would be excellent to have. It opens up a lot of new avenues to use with your clay production. It is well laid out and has a lot of good pictures and information.MY RATINGMy daughter says five stars. She likes this book a lot and can not wait to use it some more in her studio. She plans to keep it in her library there. Most pottery books don't impress her, so it is a big deal that she likes this.
As advertised
Awesome book
Needs improvement
Ithink that that are some pictures that needed more explanation or subtitle. She shows the carving with the tools but is difficult to identify witch tool made wich one of the carvings.
Es un buen libro
Apenas lo estoy leyendo pero me gustó, viene bien explicado, lo recomiendo
