5.0 out of 5 stars Gospel theme comes alive in this retelling of David and Goliath
C.H. Spurgeon once quoted a story in which an older preacher gave this advice to a young man just beginning his ministry. “Don’t you know, young man, that from every town and every village and every hamlet in England, wherever it may be, there is a road to London? So from every text of Scripture there is a road to Christ. And my dear brother, your business is, when you get to a text, to say, now, what is the road to Christ? I have never found a text that had not got a road to Christ in it, and if ever I do find one, I will go over hedge and ditch but I would get at my Master, for the sermon cannot do any good unless there is a savor of Christ in it.”I love how this book directs our focus to the gospel, showing how the story of David and Goliath points to how Jesus defeated death in a different way than people were looking for Him to; yet how He won the victory over death and offers life to all who repent and believe in Him. It makes the Old Testament “story” relevant to us today as it connects the historical account to the gospel and the unchangeableness of God. I think that having children’s books that do this helps to establish that pattern as we read other Old Testament Bible stories and look for how they point to Christ. Our third grade daughter really enjoyed reading this to her younger siblings. The reading level was simple for her to read aloud smoothly and kept the younger children’s interest. All of them were very engaged looking for the hidden pictures throughout. I’m glad Master Books is offering these books and think they will be a blessing to many!
5.0 out of 5 stars David and Goliath
A beautifully illustrated and simple telling of the story of David and Goliath. Perfect to read to a young child, or for an early to elementary reader. We really enjoyed the hidden things to look for as we read through this story. My daughter had so much fun looking for each item and I loved how at the end, those items were used to summarize the story just told, and then used again to show how the story is ultimately about Jesus. This book goes beyond just the typical bible story and points children straight to the Gospel.I received a free copy of the digital format of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable Children’s Book with an Fantastic Message
This book is the retelling of David fighting Goliath from I Samuel Chapter 17. The story is very engaging for children. The pictures included are wonderful- they tell the story to a non reader as well.It includes: information about the author in the Bible- Samuel, special words with definitions and a scripture verse. This clearly shows how the story of David and Goliath relates to Jesus. Jesus smashed death for all and He lives forever.Just like David was a hero, Jesus is our hero and sits on the throne in heaven forever.I highly recommend this book for your home library.
5.0 out of 5 stars Touching
This is a wonderful new reader for younger kids to learn about the story of David and Goliath, but the author does not stop here, he uses this story to point to Jesus for little kids to create this connection.I read this with my 7 and 9 yo, and they loved it. They enjoyed looking for the special symbols in the book during the reading time. I am sure even toddlers will be able to comprehend this book: it is written very simply, uses beautiful bright pictures to capture the attention and a fun little twist to make sure that the kids stay attentive.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story of David and Goliath
This is a great telling of the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. The only issue I have (and it is totally a personal one), Goliath's eyes are kinda creepy! As with all the books in this series, the second half of the book talks about how the story applies to Jesus and gives a gospel message about how Jesus died on the cross for our sins to create a path to Heaven for us. The very end of the book includes a glossary of words to know to make sure young readers understand the bigger words that they read in the story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Old Testament story revealing the gospel
There are many references to Jesus Christ in the Old Testament that aren’t commonly taught. In this story the author summarizes 1 Samuel 17, David and Goliath, in a way that is palatable for young kids. After the story it is revealed how it parallels the story of Jesus! We are truly enjoying this series of books that ties the events found in the Old Testament to our savior in a fun and engaging way. From the image search, the follow up questions to the dictionary at the end, you are sure to enjoy these books!
5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Engaging
A bright and colorful picture book that shares the story of David and Goliath. I appreciate that it gives the scripture references and explains that it is a true story. It also connects the story of David and Goliath with the coming of Jesus and how he overcame death on our behalf. There are some hidden pictures for young children to find, which may help keep their focus and attention.
