I found this story very enjoyable, the characters are lively and the plot has a nice twist. Overall well done.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Jerry Snyder Novel
This is a good read, that moves fairly well, with good character development. It does a good job of building the story with several turns that keep you guessing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Out of the past, into the future
Five stars is a rating I rarely give, so it behooves me to explain myself. I've been a.Wayne Stinnett fan for a long time. I can't be certain which of his Jess McDermit books I read first - it may have actually been the first one - but since I started I've become hooked and have not only grabbed every spin off, I've re-read almost all of them. Heck, once I start, I'm doing nothing but until I've finished. All his characters have a military history. At some point they served. The code of honor they all seem to share could have come from no otherplace , frankly. And here we have Jerry Snyder, a former cop and parajumper living in the Caribbean, working for the Armstrong Foundation along with DJ Martin, an irascible vet with a prosthetic leg and a fondness for alcohol. Jerry and his wife Alicia - a former nurse, although like a Marine, one could say there are no former nurses - first appeared as victims in one of Stinnett's spinoffs, as did Martin. The Foundation was a front for a wealthy man to use to find ways to right wrongs under cover of oceanographic research. In this first collaborative volume, Stinnett and Stewart Matthews have done a great job of juggling multiple storylines. From personal histories driving present motives, from an unlikely pairing to solid partnership, from Big Pharma to corrupt cops, littered with read bodies and betrayals, this one bodes well for the future of the series. There are mentions of the history that the characters have, explained in depth in author's notes and providing me some.far-reaching in the near future, but not necessary to enjoy this book. I suspect I'll also be looking to Matthew's catalog as.well.I started it in the evening, put it down when I wasn't able to read.further, and then picked it up again before it got light out to finish it. Clear your schedule - he warned.
3.0 out of 5 stars I got through it
I'd read a couple of Stinnett's books in the past and they were okay. This one was just barely tolerable IMO. I could not like the main characters, Jerry and DJ, at all; there was nothing endearing or relatable about them. Jerry's wife seemed nice enough, though. And the plot was okay. But the bad chemistry between the guys was irritating, and for supposed investigators these guys seemed like fish out of water. In fact sometimes I thought they were as dumb as fenceposts. But I have to admit that the book was worth exactly what I paid for it (zero dollars).
4.0 out of 5 stars Page turning!
An exciting book that you will be glad you read! Excitement, action and drama throughout. Do companies and people really act that way when money is involved? Read to find out.
5.0 out of 5 stars Need storyline, great author
Great start to a story line from an author I love. About a crime in Puerto Rico that spilled into the Virgin Islands, both locations that I've visited in the last few months. Can't wait to read more.
5.0 out of 5 stars pretty good story
DJ and Jerry do not get off to a blazing start but eventually the get it together. The evils of big pharma are pretty clearly laid out and there’s a case to be made that these companies are really money grubbing parasites
4.0 out of 5 stars New Series
I've read and enjoyed several of the Jesse McDermott books. This is a little different with the main characters being an "Odd Couple". Jerry is a straight laced former cop while DJ is an out of control former special forces operative. The early parts of the book tend to be a little wordy but the book finishes strongly.
Excellent!
Involved plot with many twists and turns. Very vivid characters placed in virtually impossible situations right down to the last page. I look forward to the next in the series.
Made me want to be in the story
Love the Caribbean aspect
Fascinating insights into Big Pharma
While at first glance this novel might appear to be a run-of-the-mill crime story, it goes deeper into injustice for the sick. Importantly, it doesn’t come across as preachy; the pertinent facts are woven seamlessly into the story. I think I’ve read previous Stinnett books and loved them. This is a slight departure from that style but more than worth reading.
A good read but too obvious who the antagonists are
I enjoyed it but I wasn't overwhelmed. I figured who the main baddy was fairly early on, and I found the plot a little simplistic. Overall though, an easy read on holiday perhaps.
Great Book
I Love the works of Wayne Stinnett and have read all the ones with jessie in.
