'Truly something that's just a beautiful, slick, and very enjoyable little publication' – CreativeBoom

"
Graphic Design Play Book features a variety of puzzles and challenges, providing a fun and interactive way for young visual thinkers to engage with the world of graphic design" – Eye

Understand how graphic design works and develop your visual sensibility through puzzles and activities!

An entertaining and highly original introduction to graphic design, the
Graphic Design Play Book uses puzzles and visual challenges to demonstrate how typography, signage, logo design, posters and branding work.

Through a series of games and activities, including spot the difference, matching games, drawing and dot–to–dot, readers are introduced to graphic art concepts and techniques in an engaging and interactive way. Further explanation and information is provided by solution pages and a glossary, and a loose–leaf section contains stickers, die–cut templates, and coloured paper to help readers complete the activities.

Illustrated with typefaces, poster design and pictograms by distinguished designers including Otl Aicher, Pierre Di Sciullo, Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz, the book will be enjoyed both by graphic designers, and anyone interested in finding out more about visual communication.

An excerpt from the book:
How many ways are there of saying 'hello'? Probably a zillion. And there are surely just as many ways of writing it. In CAPITALS, and with an exclamation mark ! Or with a question mark ? Or maybe both ?! As a tiny black word in the middle of a white page; or with large, multi–coloured, dancing letters ; maybe with a simple shape or an image.

Being interested in graphic design means looking at and understanding the world around us. And being aware of the multitude of signs that shape our daily life day after day and freight it with meaning – whether it's a stop sign, a cornflakes packet, a psychedelic album cover, a seductive headline on the cover of a magazine, the more subtle typography of a page in a novel, a flashing pharmacy sign or the credits of a sci–fi film.

Thinking about this plethora of signs was what led us to conceive this introduction to graphic design as a collection of beacons and benchmarks – as a toolbox for exploring and learning in a simple and intuitive way through play, alone or with others, whether you're a child or an adult. These are experiments, a series of suggestions, with no right or wrong answers.

The four sections of this book – typography, posters, signs, identity – are all invitations to dive in, explore and let your eyes and your hands take you on a voyage of discovery! –
Sophie Cure and Aurélien Farina

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book with interesting exercises

E.B. · July 20, 2024

I liked the book because it brings you to think through the exercises in there. I'd recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach to design for artists and layfolk alike!

I love this book a lot! I’m starting my journey towards finding a tattoo apprenticeship, and while I have a solid art degree and YEARS of art practice, I have very little formal training in design. The book seems like a playbook — it is. But it’s really a mind tease and you are constantly learning even though it just feels like fun. I highly recommend it for whatever reason you may have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool!

The design of this book is amazing and I love the colors. It's a great short book to help spark some creativity. I would recommend adding this to your collection if you are a designer!

4.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all

A. · November 22, 2019

I got this book for my daughter and It was not what I expected but found it interesting and creative. This book found a fun way to mesh both ideas and develop design skills at the same time. This book is a "Play book" on design. I think it is a great way to visually think about design and to help young minds in the tech world think about how to be visually creative off of the computer. I think this book is a great learning tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Students

5.0 out of 5 stars For Graphic Designers

I was given this book for Christmas and it was more than I wanted. It was creative and full of knowledge. This is a perfect graphic design book for graphic designers and Students. People who are not designers don’t understand this book. But if you know someone who is a graphic design, GET IT!! There is so much cool inspiration!

3.0 out of 5 stars An activity book, not a strategy book

S. · September 18, 2021

Maybe I misread the description. The title 'play book' made me think I was going to see examples of common themes used in graphic design. Strategies, or 'plays' to accomplish different outcomes.Nope. It's an activity book for adults. And while it teaches some elements of graphic design while doing. It offers a limited scope of variety. Most of the activities riff off of the cover, and follow those colors and themes. It's just Not the graphic design 'play book' I was hoping for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning book—for kids.

J.S. · September 22, 2020

I got this book as a professional designer thinking it would help with creativity and idea generation. A little "get out of your mind" kind of book. It's more "this is a ligature—Can YOU find the ligatures in this body of text?". I would have LOVED this book as a 9–11 year old. The colors are fun, the exercises seem entertaining and educational, the design itself is stunning, and the quality is 5 stars in paper, binding, printing, etc. It's just not really for adults, in my opinion, especially those already in the industry. Yes, yes, 'everyone's a kid at heart' but this one's more educational puzzles than 'find your inner kid even if you aren't one', imo.

Livro de criança

M. · July 14, 2022

Tosco. Me arrependi demais de ter comprado.

IT'S FUN

piacevole , divertente , e con una bellissima grafica. Un libro che gioca con l' idea del design grafico rendendolo un pò come un libro-passatempo . Non è nozionistico.

Not As Expected

Kein typisches Buch zum lesen, eher was zum probieren, experimentieren und testen. Ziemlich cool, schon der Teil über die Schrift-Typen. Schöne Abwechslung und wunderbar geeignet zum kritzeln und selbst gestalten.
