Street

Description:

About this item:

1970s New York City is borderline bankrupt. Police departments, public schools and other municipalities are struggling under massive layoffs, buildings are abandoned, and the streets are rife with crime and drugs. For Johnny Alvarez, a precocious young runaway, the decay and lawlessness offer camouflage and opportunity. He squats in an empty apartment in a derelict Washington Heights tenement and gathers a gang of streetwise kids, most of whom struggle with their own issues. Johnny is haunted by the abuse he suffered at the hands of his sadistic older brother. The crew tries to keep his head straight with belonging and levity, but the turbulent nature of the street triggers unwanted memories, which spin Johnny into recklessness amid the city’s seedy underbelly.

"A thought-provoking coming-of-age novel imbued with psychological dimensions...Its blend of gritty realism and psychological depth makes it a recommendable choice for readers seeking a coming-of-age novel that navigates the challenging journey from adolescence to maturity amidst a backdrop of urban hardship and complexity." ★★★★

This is a very compelling story about survival on the gritty side of NYC. The bonding between the characters is real, and the story shows us how a supportive brotherhood of street smart kids can come together to help Johnny come to terms with his horrific past. The writing is real and raw, and the characters are unforgettable. I’m so looking forward to the sequel!! Great book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, just WOW!!!

I thought I'd be able to read Street while I was as away for holidays but I'll probably be finished tomorrow night and we don't leave until Saturday.I feel like I'm right there in the middle of it! The way the author "describes" (the word doesn't do it justice) every single character and the locations and the combination of intense fear, humor, thrill, emotion, and love is mind-blowing. When I'm reading, all my senses are hyper stimulated. I can hear their music, smell the city, see each character as if I were sitting on a bench right near them. I keep saying, "just one more chapter" but can't stop. And when I put the book down, I'm utterly fascinated by the fact that this all came out of A.D. Metcalfe's mind! The many dozens of main characters that she depicts so well I'd recognize them instantly is OUTSTANDING! And all the minor characters too. The narrative is so incredibly rich. And the many different accents and dialects and teen talk are so spot on! I'm just amazed that the author had all those voices, characters, and scenes in her head for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Storyteller!

You’ll read it fast, but continue to think about its characters long after you’ve turned the last page. Set in the grit and poverty of 1970s New York City, the main character, Johnny, is trying to escape his past and begin a new life. Can his colorful new friends help him recover from old wounds? In Johnny, this author has created a savvy and authentic protagonist that you’ll never stop learning from and rooting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great depiction of New York City street life in the 1970s

The narrative is compelling and very hard to dismiss. A. D. Medcalf makes you care about the young characters' struggles from the start. If you grew up in New York City in the early 1970s, then you might have passed a gang of young teenagers and felt irritation. This book answers why these kids were driven to behave the way they often did. As incredible as some of the adventures are, Streets allows the reader to accept that yes, life could get that dangerous, those bonds could be that strong and contradictory, and that thankfully facing and overcoming severe trauma is truly possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising Survivor Story

At first glance, Ms. Metcalfe's book gives the impression that this engaging story will be just about another neglected teen who tries survive on the street. The character, Johnny, will pull you in with his intelligence and charismatic leadership skills. The book demonstrates that closeknit families are often disguised as classmates who support each other the way few families would.Readers will be drawn in and caught up in concern, amazement, and eagerness to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book to anyone brave enough to want to glimpse a snippet of the life that many of our youth endure. For those of you who want a great idea for a children's book, check out Ms. Metcalfe's book, Mousebound. I bought the book for every friend and relative with a young child!

I started reading STREET and couldn't put it down. The characters are so real and their lives become so real that I felt as if I knew them and was cheering them on. It's New York in a time gone by but it is also a story for now. I recommend it to all ages and to everyone who wants to start the new year with a great book. I am giving it as a Christmas present to friends and family. Looking forward to more books from A. D. Metcalfe.

This is a tour de force.I grew up in NYC at the period of time this book is set, and I can attest to the authenticity of the descriptions of the city at that time.A great book draws you into the lives of the characters, so that they matter to you. This book does just that.I now must await the publication of the second novel in this trilogy, to find out what happens to these new 'friends' i have made while reading this novel! The dark humor and the serious add up to a gripping journey that pulls you in and doesn't let go until the last page.Only fools will pass this book by.

I am an avid reader, and this was hands down one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a long time. It is funny, sharp, and touching. I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up until 1:00 in the morning to finish it, then had to pour myself a whiskey to come down from the high. Amazing amazing book. A must read for all humans.
