5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Memoir of the Rewards of Persistence and Determination
While the title of this book may be a Biblical reference, David Brown’s engagingly personal memoir offers an impressive range of reference, whether it’s a reference to classic TV shows, great literature, military history, physical fitness, self-help books or countless other topics. As the smallest man ever to earn membership in the elite U.S. Navy SEALS, David Brown overcame daunting odds to achieve his childhood dream of becoming “Jacques Cousteau with a machine gun.” The bulk of the book focuses on David’s late teen years, making his story perfect reading for mature high schoolers and college students as well as all adults.David shares the lessons he learned as he matured, and each chapter begins with an appropriate epigraph. These offer pieces of philosophy, ranging from the expected, such as quotes from Winston Churchill and Norman Vincent Peale, to unexpected nuggets of wisdom from Martha (not George) Washington and Jim Morrison of The Doors. We follow David through his relationships with friends and family, witnessing the toll the constant moves and stress of SEAL life take on him, but he’s often self-effacing rather than egotistical. We see his philosophical and spiritual growth as he moves on from the SEALS to important work with NCIS and then the EPA.As the son of a career Marine myself, one who was wounded in two wars, the book affirms my respect for the sacrifices of military members and their families.I also like the way the book offers good comic relief at times, mixed with some fun pop culture shout-outs, ones including everything from “Sea Hunt” to the Smurfs.I think “And Goliath” could be made into a powerful movie in the right hands. It’s well-written and filled with cinematic drama and details. It’s a remarkable book one which inspires readers with David’s life journey of “unbridled persistence and determination.”
5.0 out of 5 stars Never stop learning till we die
“Brownie” writes an amazing book, I felt like I was walking along with him the entire way. He accomplished so much in his lifetime, only to find out he was running from himself and his background. You need to finish this book to see how it ends, but the journey s amazing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Truly enjoyed Dave's insights
Although not from a law enforcement or military background, I enjoyed Dave's stories and perspectives. He writes in a light hearted, self-effacing manner which makes it seem like he's sharing with you in personal letters. His views on determination and success are thoughtful; you can tell that he's been curious and mused over those concepts for years. The chapters are well done; flow smoothly...easy to read. Recommend to anyone wondering about rising above your personal traits, background and inexperience.
5.0 out of 5 stars Against all odds. Terrific Story
Mr. Browns story I felt was a terrific example of “against all odds” from his youth to when he entered into adulthood entering into the Seals.I come from an immigrant family myself and reading his upbringings and the challenges he faced at a young age reminded me of many families similar to mine. We endure , we bear down, and do not allow the opinions of others to keep you from persisting.Fantastic read!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
An inspirational story of how hard work, intensity, focus and dedication can overcome seemingly impossible odds. The SEAL training chapters are riveting… I had a hard time putting the book down. I highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Story of Unyielding Perseverance!
I loved this book! I truly did not expect to enjoy a book about the military but this book was so much more. Insight into the endurance required by Navy Seals was only part of what I found in this book. Showing you a clear path as to what you can accomplish with a strong mind and an even stronger will was more evident. This can be considered an amazing self help book as well as a military journey. I highly recommend this book!
5.0 out of 5 stars Parable of the Mustard Seed
The Parable of the Mustard Seed.Matthew (13:31-32), Mark (4:30-32), and Luke (13:18-19)The Kingdom of God starts from the smallest beginnings, like a tiny mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, but grows into something vast and encompassing. The parable emphasizes the potential for great growth and impact from humble beginnings.Dave did not save the world, but his story would be an inspiration for anyone who intends to.GOOD BOOK!!J.
