5.0 out of 5 stars A good feeder to rely on for vacation times!
I will start off by saying I definitely love fish. At the time I used these for vacation, I had 4 tanks set up (took one down due to downsizing), and still have 3 running with various fish from large (10-12") in one tank down to the smallest ones (0.5-1") in the other three tanks, and these feeders worked amazingly well for all of them.I took a week long vacation for the holidays in December, and set up four of these feeders (one on each tank). Three of the feeders were filled with flakes, which worked excellent in them, and one was set up with medium-size sinking pellets for my large oscar. The scheduling was very easy to set up once I knew what buttons to push in what order, though, keep in mind the timings are set up in 24hr time, so, a bit of converting may be in order if you are on 12hr time. The variable amounts with the slider worked great with the flakes, but were more fiddly with the pellets, and I had to take packing tape and tape off half of the hole to only drop a small amount that my oscar could grab or manage at a time, so, if you're dealing with a single fish or a few fish, keep this trick in mind.I was surprised at how waterproof the canister for the food is, as it rests with the opening facing above it, and the fact that it does not keep the opening above the water and just slide a door open to feed makes sure the food does not get wet or clump up and block the opening. All and all, a reliable feeder from a brand that does a wonderful job to relieve worry when one is away from their tanks for a while.
5.0 out of 5 stars Kept Fish Fed , Alive, and Healthy
Had it in a humid environment running for almost 5 weeks while on a trip. No fish casualties. No caking of Hikari mini pellets. The pellets seemed dry and still fresh upon inspection. Therefore, the built in active ventilation seems to work efficiently enough. Like with all drum feeders, the amount of food dispersed is not always consistent, but as long as it do not overfeed or underfeed consistently, it can tide you over even during a prolonged absence.I wish the programming was more flexible (every other day but a larger portion rather than to rely on daily on the smallest opening and maybe risk food build up with flakes).
4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, can be a litte confusing to program
We need this for vacation, and it works quite well, except for 2 things-1) it must be programed very carefully, or you don't get the feedings at all, the time of day must be programmed, then the time of feedings and THEN the number of feedings (1 or 2) for each time 2) it spreads the food over a longish area, so that unless you have quite a large hole for your aquarium, it will dump food. We have jury-rigged a peice of styrofoam so that the food will be guided into the aquarium, though what happens is the styrofoam gets wet, and the food tends to build up there.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best investment for your aquarium
I have had this gadget for almost 4 years now. It works as dependable and accurate as when new. This is another great german design. Simple, sturdy and practical. I wouldn't trust the life of little swimming buddies to one of those chinese knock-offs that supposedly perform the same function. If you don't have the time to feed your fish and yet love them, this is the answer. But bear in mind, with this gadget of without it, you MUST keep an eye on the tank periodically (I advise check every other day).
5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD VALUE FOR THE PRICE
I like every thing about it except for one detail. The price was right. To me it was very easy to program, of course you have to adjust it manually for daylight savings but that's no biggie. It holds a lot more food than other feeders. Mounting choices are a plus. The fan helps keep the food dry. It's very quiet. The only thing I don't like is not for me it's for my fish. You have to slightly crush the flake food and make it a more uniform size. I have some larger fish and they prefer the big flakes. It has been working for a while now and they are eating fine now. I guess if you get hungry you'll eat what's put on the table.
1.0 out of 5 stars Feeder dies from moisture exposure
Feeder died within 1 week of install, probably from moisture exposure. Returned to Seller and did not receive full refund. Seller refunded about 10% of the purchase price. Bought a second feeder. Same result except that it worked for about 3 weeks. I do not recommend this feeder or Seller
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product
This product works great once it is set up. Make sure you read the instructions for proper programing. I have a wooden lighting/top on my 55 gal tank and just drilled a 1 1/4 inch hole along one side away from the lights and air tubes. Then I put a piece of paper over the hole and manually ran the unit in different spots until I found the spot where only a minimal amount of food did not fall and drew an outline of the unit position on the top and removed the paper for use. The original batteries are still operating since I started using it in the beginning of June. Recommendation - don't let the unit get less than half full and make sure if your flakes are large that you crush them up a little so the scoop works effectively. My fish are happy and I am happy. I go away for long weekends or vacations and they are fine!
4.0 out of 5 stars The flake size is important
I bought 3 of these for 3 tanks. I've had them for about 3 months and they seem to work well. The problem I've had is figuring out the proper size to break the flakes up into. Too small of flakes seem to pour out too much even with the gate closed way down, too large of flakes don't seem to dispense well. Still, I'm happy with them! They are great when on vacation and also when I'm lazy and don't feel like getting off the couch to feed the fish.
I have bought Dophin fish feeder which is bigger than Ehim in size
Not worth for the price. Got the same Moisture related issues in this feeder also.
