Celestron's value priced PowerSeeker 60 is an affordable entry level telescope with some nice extras like a correct image prism and "The Sky" astronomy software included. The package also includes an Alt-Azimuth mount with adjustable aluminum tripod, high and low power eyepieces, a 3X barlow lens, and a 5 power cross hair finder scope.

The PowerSeeker 60AZ comes disassembled in a compact box, but the fully illustrated quick set-up guide makes it easy to assemble. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole.

The optics of the PowerSeeker 60AZ are surprisingly good, especially when I use the low power 20mm eyepiece. The correct image prism and the 20mm eyepiece give me a magnification of 35X, so backyard birds seem five times closer than with my seven power binoculars. My first view of Saturn's rings and globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules came with a 60mm telescope similar to the PowerSeeker 60, and the new PowerSeeker 60AZ is just as good showing me literally hundreds of craters on the Moon.

The PowerSeeker 60 can be upgraded with standard 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces. A 25mm plossl eyepiece for example gives a true field of view of almost 2 degrees for delightful views of star clusters like the Pleiades, while a 6mm eyepiece provides a magnification of 117X, just right to see the rings of Saturn or the cloud bands on Jupiter. The Alt-Azimuth mount included with the PowerSeeker 60AZ is lighter and easier to use than an Equatorial mount, but it does not track stars and planets. As soon as you get the Moon centered in the eyepiece it starts drifting toward the edge, this is caused by rotation of the Earth. The Moon may stay in the low power eyepiece for two or three minutes, but with the high power 4mm eyepiece (175X magnification) a star will disappear in only twenty or thirty seconds.

Celestron's PowerSeeker 60AZ is a real value because it has surprisingly good optics in a package that's light, portable and affordable. The drawback is that it has a lot of plastic parts, including the finder scope and the 3X barlow. For a more rugged alternative, take a look at Celestron's AstroMaster 70AZ which has more powerful optics, better eyepieces, and a much sturdier Alt-Azimuth mount. --Jeff Phillips

    Pros:

    • Surprisingly good optics
    • Correct image prism
    • Easy no tool set-up
    • Light, portable, and affordable
    Cons:
    • Does not track stars and planets
    • Plastic finder and barlow lens
    • Light weight tripod

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 'Nightime' Moon Viewing Telescope - Jupiter with Moons

    L.H. · August 20, 2022

I was disappointed at first, after viewing terrestrial objects (looks blurry). I was looking at an antenna on top of mountain and it looked really bad. Not clear at all. But decided to look at the moon before returning it. The moon looks amazing! I can see the craters! Just go on internet and look for a moon phase calendar website to see when moon will be rising (in my city, moon rose 20 min after moon rise time because there's mountains). I don't use finderscope because for one thing, it's hard to calibrate it for it to be accurate. When I want to see the moon, I just point telescope towards moon by getting behind telescope, looking up the tube and pointing it at moon. It's tricky to focus without GEM (German Equatorial Mount) but for someone looking for an inexpensive telescope for basic moon viewing, this Celestron PowerSeeker 50AZ Telescope is perfect. Nothing fancy but better than say, a $30 telescope they sell at certain grocery stores in my opinion. The moon looks good at night only, I looked at it in the daytime and it didn't look good. This telescope is not good for terrestrial, or daytime viewing. It's September, the end of Summer 2022. Here in California, there's a bright star that appears in the eastern horizon 2 hours after sunset. It's Jupiter. There's 4 small stars surrounding it, those are 4 of Jupiters moons. After reading that you can see Jupiter and it's moons right now with a small telescope, I tried it and found it to be true! People that leave bad reviews for this telescope, most likely don't know how to use it properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic entry-level telescope

    C.S. · March 20, 2024

I have now had several weeks to get accustomed to the Celestron PowerSeeker 60AZ telescope. I must say it more than lives up to its price point. For casual stargazing, there is not much better of a choice to make. Anything from the Moon to the Andromeda Galaxy can be found easily using the finder scope and provided eyepieces. For basic to intermediate astrophotography, it gets a little iffy. The mount provided shakes a lot in response to any contact made with it, making shots taken with a phone immensely difficult to line up. If you are going to use this for astrophotography, invest in a stronger, heavier mount. Also consider purchasing at least an additional ~10mm eyepiece and an entry-level CCD camera. I am saving up for one as this review is being written.Optical quality is right on-par with other Celestron products, in that it is nearly flawless. Once the scope is properly focused, objects appear absolutely crystal clear.Overall, this scope is utterly perfect for beginners as-is, but any higher level of dedication requires much additional equipment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner scope

    M. · December 28, 2024

The telescope itself offers good magnification and clear, crisp images. The finder is very easy to knock out of alignment and the screws don’t adjust or hold the finder well. The tripod is your basic, cheap aluminum frame. There is no smooth movement with it, no bar as it says in the description to give ease of movement. The phone adapter works well but the iPhone Pro has issues with focusing because of its multiple lenses- a problem with the phone not the adapter but something to be aware of.None the less, for the price it’s a good entry level telescope for a child with budding interest.

    Amazing

    dont expect too much

this is good but not what i was thinking you can only watch moon perfectly according to my experience but still i will say this is not bad

Useful telescope, with its troubles. Value for Money.

OpticsDecent quality optics. The light gathering capacity is average due to 70mm aperture which is in line with the price. With 20mm eyepiece (35x magnification), image is good and sharp. With 4mm eyepiece(175x magnification), image is softer and not bright. Finderscope is good enough with crosshairs. The Barlow Lens I received is pretty much useless. Chromatic Aberration is present but it's very much expected in a refractor in this range.Jupiter's band and moon can be seen. Saturn's rings can be seen. Moon's craters are vividly visible, as evident int he pictures attached.TripodThe tripod itself is good enough for the weight of telescope. The mount is shaky and had lot of free play. The altitude fine adjustment screw mechanism has free play too. But not a deal breaker at this price and casual usage. I put a dry heavy towel over the centre of telescope to dampen out the vibrations.Overall it's a decent telescope for the price. Definitely lets you see so much farther than you could see with a similarly priced binocular. The Light gathering capability ie not great but that's not a problem in daytime terrestrial viewing. If you can worlk around it's shortcomings like poor mount, etc, it's a useful optical instrument.

Very good beginner scope. Kid friendly too

    T.H.P. · February 17, 2024

Saw a lot of negative comments but decided to try since the price is not too expensive. It has been a good decision. Maybe those who had negative feedback expected too much from this scope to perform like a 6-12 inch scope? Anyway reason for me to buy this is due to the short local length of 400mm which make it a travel scope category. Other than the tripod, everything including my additional eye piece set can fit nicely into a small gym bag.Can see moon clearly even with the 4mm eye piece. The only useless item probably is the 3x baron scope. In any case for beginner any buyer should still upgrade with an additional eye piece set to see planets and moon better.
