5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Filter Media From The Worlds Finest Filter Manufacturer
I've been keeping fish for close to 40 years and have been a die hard eheim fan for nearly as long. Gunter Eheim was an engineer with vision and created the first line of filters to incorporate biological, mechanical and chemical filtration in single systems. The Pro series remain the finest filters money can buy. However the cost is steep although worth any penny. Regardless of the canister filter you own 90% of it's effectivness can be directly related to the quality of media you use. Without question eHeim's substrate pro will colonize nitrifying bacteria faster, quicker and more of it than most any media I've tried. The material, Sintered glass has a remarkable amount of places for healthy bacteria to colonize, the shpere shape increases this amount over cermaic rins dramatically and the results are easy to see and see quickly. Lower nd fewer amonia spikes, stablized water parameters - and best of all healtheir happier fish.Unlike most media sintered glass really doesn't break down like finished or or unfinished ceramic - nor does it loose its effecency like plastic BioBalls (great for wet dry systems - not for canister filters) Because you'll probably never have to replace these - the media pays for itself many times over as you'll get years of use out it.A terrific media that really delivers exceptional results - your fish will thank you for it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Quality - Period.
Just buy it. It will last forever and you won’t regret it. It’s Eheim.
5.0 out of 5 stars Large volume of media, very porous.
Stuff seems pretty nice. Could probably fill six to eight fluval 207 canister filter media baskets. And the 207 only has three. Bought way more than I needed with this but it's an excuse to get more tanks I guess. Could fill a nice large column in a sump with it I'm sure or several bottle style air/sponge filter style DIY filters. Very porous stuff. Pretty dusty. I'd wash it if you can.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
Possibly the best more versatile bio media. Has a nice size to it, size ranges from 5-7ish mm. Seems to be a very porous surface. Compared to other medias, like ceramic rings or Seachem Matrix (I've bought large quantities of matrix, and the material seems to vary greatly, even including what looks like rocks and slate. Will not slip through Rena XP trays.Doesn't cut up media bags.Has a relatively long life, the balls breakdown over several years. (Faster if you rinse more often) (you'll notice a small silica sand like sand in your tanks floor.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good product but not the best
When you read about this article, you think that this is the best product, but it isn't.This is better than ceramic rings, with a density about 450 m²/l, but if you compare this product against biohome (506 m²/l), Matrix (700 m²/l), or JBL Micromec (1500 m²/l), this is not the best competitor.Don't think that this is bad, it works grate against ammonia and Nitrites, buy it's density doesn't work really well with Nitrates. If you also want to control Nitrates, I recommend you JBL Micromec or Matrix. They do control Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates.
5.0 out of 5 stars Guppy Tank
The media could not be loaded. I use this in my Ecco pro 300 in a 25 gallon guppy tank with an inline UV lights. I have had the same guppy strain in this tank for over 8 years with no problems. Not one sick fish. The water is always crystal clear. I also do a 20% water change each week. I also use Pothos plants to maintain water clarity. No carbon, no ammo chips, no chemicals, nothing but water. I have been using Eheim filters, and other products since 1982.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very porous
I checked how fast it wicks water, and it sucks water up meaning it's s as porous as I was hoping. The balls are pretty small, so for most filters, it's best to keep it in a mesh bag. Be sure to rinse it before use.
5.0 out of 5 stars The best media ever.
The best media for any canister filter. No need to buy new ones when it gets dirty, just rinse the media with warm/hot water and it'll last forever. I have a fluval fx5 and fx6. I buy 5 liters of the eheim substrat pro for each of the filters. And I fill all 3 baskets with it. No need for bio rings or carbon. This is simply the best, no exaggeration.

Great Value
Bought to replace old existing Substrat Pro Biological Filter Media
Works great.
Great biological filter media works well. Use it in all 4 of my aquariums. It will take 5 to 6 weeks to cycle your aquarium.
Great Bio Media!
Simply the best bio media out there. One thing to note is that it’s smaller pebbles than usually. Not sure if that is a recent change or I just haven’t bought any in a while.
