I like that this shortning doesn't contain any soy. The shortning works as well as name brand shortnings in that the baked goods have a great consitency with the bonus of a clean taste. As regular shortning is a step above lard in taste and the lightness of baked goods, Spectrum Naturals is a step above regular shortning and works for thoses who cannot tolerate Soy.

Palm oil has gotten very bad rap from the media and medics.We know much more about healthy fats and this is one. It lends a velvety texture to sauteed mushrooms, for example. When butter is a no go, this is the perfect go to.I also keep it on hand in my disaster hoard as it lasts, is neutral and adds a good source of fat calories that are healthy (unlike seed oils and hydrogenated fats.)

I have a daughter who has developed a soy allergy over the past year. One of the things she enjoys (as we all do) is a family recipe for chocolate cake with chocolate fudge frosting. The frosting calls for 4tbs of shortening, and is brought to a boil and then cooled in an ice-water bath. So I was looking for something with a melting point very similar to Crisco in order for the solidification to work properly. This product fits the bill nicely. An added benefit is that the taste is vastly better with the absence of an oily taste from the soybean oil. In fact, it is VERY reminiscent of pre-1980's Crisco before the heavy use of Soybean oil to make the product cheaper. After using this, I don't think I'll ever go back! I highly recommend it.

It came opened. Whoever packed it used a box a tad too small so it squeezed the lid open and the shortening itself wasn’t sealed.

Despite all the so called bad saturated fats, this is a positive choice....why? Palm oil has been studied and shown to be effective in reducing blood cholesterol. I realize those stats are primarily from the raw, unfiltered, horrible tasting red product I cannot stomach. However, please note that margarine products designed to reduce cholesterol USE this as a primary ingredient. Here we have it in an organic form, absolutely perfect for baking the most luscious, delicate, crusty goods you can hope for. Substitute it for shortening or lard or even butter in some cases. It bakes up the most consistent and best tasting GLUTEN FREE products for me. I have nothing but rave reviews about this so far. My one complaint is that I ordered one from Bolo and it was melted on top and had some wierd chemical smell. I had to chuck it. I bought the next six at my local coop and all were fresh and untarnished.

I absolutely love this shortening!!!! It makes wonderful frosting and biscuits and will never go back to using crisco!!!! Everything I’ve made with this comes wonderful!!!! I use a 50/50 mix of butter and spectrum when I make my frosting and nobody ever knows or can even tell I used this shortening in it. It does not leave a greasy film or taste in your mouth at all!!!! I also made biscuits with it a while back and they were absolutely the best I’ve ever made using this, they came out so light and fluffy and tasted great!!!! I’m definitely hooked on this and will continue to only buy and use this brand.

Great alternative to vegetable shortenings
I use it in a lot of gluten free baking and especially regular, non GF pies. It provides the same texture to pastry that the vegetable shortening I used in the past did.

As far as I am concerned, this is the best shortening out there! Have been using it for years until I couldn't find it when we first moved here, so tried the other organic brand I could find, and it didn't compare! I will always use this product (provided I can find it, that is)! And yes, I keep a couple of tubs on hand in the pantry, now....

It is just palm oil.
Unsafe delivery of food product. seal broken. contents smeared.
The tub of shortening came in a bubble wrap envelope.....and nothing else. no bag or plastic or lining. when I opened the envelope the tub of shortening was open, seal broken, lid upside down and contents of the tub smeared all over the inside of the envelope and sides of the container. This is unacceptable and not safe for consumption. And i will not be able to use it. I would like my money back. There is no options for zero stars.
