5.0 out of 5 stars Bunny loves it! And a comment on quality variation
Great quality product! I order the 9lb box for my miniature fuzzy lop Darla every two months or so. She absolutely loves it and will clean her hay rack out to the last piece. The packaging is easy to store and keep tidy. I do wish they had an airtight resealable top, but that’s mostly because I buy such large quantities for my little bunny and would like it to stay fresher longer. The only true “downside” to I’ve experienced is that when comparing the price to similar products, it’s one of the most expensive. Since I don’t have much experience with these competitors (Darla liked this hay so much I never needed to shop around) I can’t speak on the quality vs. pricing sliding scale there.I want to address some of the reviews complaining that the product is not consistent in quality. I’d suggest that it is not the quality that changes, but the texture and body of the Timothy hay. Hay is harvested in “cuttings”, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. For anyone curious, I’d direct you to West Meadow Rabbit’s video on YouTube on the difference between cuttings. Unless your critter is super picky, it shouldn’t make any significant difference to them or the hay’s nutritional profile. Otherwise, I’d suggest buying a hay product which specifies the “cut”.For example, my previous box resembled 3rd cut hay: it was darker in color, the strands were thinner, curlier and almost cotton-candy like, and the smell was potently sweet & like tea. There were few of the “fuzzy tops”, or seed heads, in this mix. My bunny likes this because of the sweeter taste and strong smell. My current box more closely resembles 1st cut hay: the stalks are more rigid, thicker, and a pale green color with lots of fuzzy seed heads that Darla goes crazy for. It just smells like normal hay, and does break into smaller pieces as you get to the bottom of the box along with a more noticeable buildup of dust. This is normal, especially when buying large portions as the fragile stalks get crushed in transit. My bunny enjoys munching along the straight stalks like we would slurp a spaghetti noodle.Again, both should be received well by your bunny so long as they aren’t super picky, and they shouldn’t have significantly different nutrition profiles so don’t let that deter you from seeing if they like this stuff! This brand and product as a whole is excellent, and in my opinion the change in texture is a good thing - no wasteful discrimination for superficial reasons (on a product which does not state cutting) and a natural variation.
5.0 out of 5 stars Seems great!
My rabbit loves this! I switched to this brand because my old one went up a lot in price. This seems like good quality hay, good value! Would highly recommend! The only downside is my last kind came in three smaller bags in one big box but this one comes in one big bag inside the box so it is harder to store. But for the price difference it's worth it! God bless!
5.0 out of 5 stars Green, whole, and fragrant!
The two stars are for the quick arrival for arriving the next day, but these last three batches were terrible. I understand it's randomly hand-picked. Though, do we really need to drop $50 for roots? I feel bad for my bunnies. They deserve better! Seriously will consider paying extra for kaytee in smaller quantities. Appalling!Edit:Today, I reluctantly opened the package and could immediately smell the fresh greens through the exterior box. It's absolutely stunning! The bunnies love it and I don't have to worry about them tossing it to the side for nesting material. They savor each piece and actually stay full. This is certainly a better batch and well worth it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality hay, full pieces.
For overall health, I’m always providing my guinea pigs with hay. They all seem to enjoy the taste of this brand, and I appreciate how it’s not all dust and crumbles like some other brands can be. It’s packed in there, so you get a good amount in the box.
1.0 out of 5 stars Beware! Hard stalks that smell nice and fresh
I have purchased the 25 lb bulk box of this hay on 3 separate occasions. The first 2 boxes of hay were good quality hay with seedheads and fine soft blades of grass that my guinea pigs loved. I have never had an issue with freshness. It always arrives slightly green and smells delicious when opened. Obviously, with hay, there have been a few stems but overall, the guinea pigs would eat every bit that was put in their cage. The numerous grass blades throughout the hay have been soft and tender. This last box, although fresh, was mostly long hard stalks and seedheads. The guinea pigs love the seedheads, but the stalks are hard. There are very few actual blades of grass. The quality and texture is very poor compared to the boxes I have ordered in the past. After giving my guinea pigs a chance to eat it and seeing how much waste I had, I contacted Oxbow. I was told that since I ordered this through Bolo and that Bolo is "not a licensed vendor of theirs", that they could do nothing about it. The rationale was that they couldn't guarantee what hay I received or the freshness. I told the representative that the hay is in the original Oxbow packaging and the issue I had was nothing to do with freshness...it was the actual quality of the hay that had been packed. I assumed that Oxbow hay is second or third cut hay, but after my discussion with her I looked on their website and on the box of hay that I received and there is no information on there pertaining to whether it is first cut, second cut, etc. It does say that it is "hand sorted", but beware that there is no guarantee that you will get a good grass hay that your guinea pigs will eat. They say that the hay is inspected and graded. They do have a disclaimer that in a bulk package, there may be portions within the interior of the hay that are not good quality. However, this entire box is consistently inferior to the other boxes I have purchased, which leads me to question their "grading" process. Ordering bulk is still more economical if you have a place to store it. However, I have lost money this time and I am very disappointed in Oxbow. I am going to try another brand of hay next time that guarantees either 2nd or 3rd cut hay. This box has pretty much been a waste. I have even tried feeding the stalks that the guinea pigs won't touch to our herd of goats and they are not interested in it either. Yikes!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great hay
This is a quality hay and the boxes is a great price, but all my orders are inconsistent some fresher than others
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Hay
I have been using oxbow for a very long time for my bunnies and it has been great quality. I have never had a box from oxbow where mybunnies did not eat it all! Only thing I would be aware of and warn people of is the delivery damage. My box is so damaged that I will have to find a new way to store the bag of hay since it looks like my box was beaten up.
Oxbow western Timothy hay 50 pound bag
My rabbit absolutely loves this hay. Best quality for the best price!
I love this brand
All my rabbit’s hay , treats and meds(critical care) are from this brand the only thing i would say is that when you buy oxbow hay in smaller amounts its cut into smaller pieces and this box has the longest pieces ever so i have to actually manually cut in smaller pieces or else my bunny wont eat
Different Quality
Our 3rd purchase and it was the same as the 2nd one, the packaging was different from the very first one we’ve purchased, hence the quality of the hay was not the cutting that the bunbuns used to eat. In addition, there were no seal or tape on the plastic containing the hay when you open the box. It’s a 50/50 not the original one.
Great Hay for my Bunny
Since the beginning, I've always bought Timothy Hay for my rabbit. It's a very good hay with lots of fibre which your bunny needs. It helps their GI tract moving which is very important. Luckily, my rabbit just loves her hay and really eats lots of it. She also eats some of her Oxbow pellets too, but what she eats mostly is her hay. The hay comes compressed in a 9 lb. box. So you have to put some muscle into it to get a grab of the hay. It's easy to store and a very good price for the 9lb box. My rabbit can go through a 9 lb box in 3-4 months. So getting value for my money is important to me. Keeping your pet healthy with Timothy Hay will save you Vet visits. Glad to have found this hay on Bolo.
Coniglietto contento!
