Seems to work well without the clogging of a sponge filter. I use canister filters for my setup and this seems to keep the flow going. Very easy to rinse out. To me it seems to perform as well or better than a sponge as the initial stage.

Good replacement mechanical filter media
Better than Mechpro
The stuff is original and still works perfectly. I bought this to replace my Mechpro came with Pro 4+ 600 canister. Mechpro is made of plastic. In a few years it disintegrated into very small pieces and rendered useless as mechanical filter media. The ceramic ring should last forever. Just a side note that 1L is only enough to fill 1 pro series media tray. I would have bought the 5L package if I knew that ahead because Pro4+ 600 used 2 mechanical media trays.
