5.0 out of 5 stars What can you say about a rubber mat?
I've lately been disappointed by several products I've purchased so I was delighted that this tamper mat completely met my expectations. First, it is the perfect size. I can place my latte mug and frothing pitcher on the mat and still have room to place my espresso basket to tamper it. The mat is also quite thick so I have no problems making sure my grinds are packed in without damaging my counter top. It stays put and doesn't slip around. When I first opened the package, there definitely was a strong smell. I did not mind the odor since it reminds me of when I get new tires for my motorcycle which I equate to fun. However, the oder does dissipate after several days. I do notice that it comes back somewhat when I rinse it, especially in hot water. So, if you make espresso, this is a must to protect your countertop.
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my single serve machine
This is a great product. The price was right and the quality is good. It is nice and thick and does not move on the counter stays in place. Spills wipe right of if you have any. It is on the smaller size but it fits my single serve coffee machine perfect. You could also use this for coffee cups or coffee accessories.
2.0 out of 5 stars Strong, unpleasant rubber smell
Rattleware usually has good, high quality coffee accessories, but not in this case. This tamping mat has a strong, persistent, and very unpleasant rubber smell. I was afraid to set my tamper and portafilter on it, but just having it around my coffee station detracted from the coffee preparation. I enjoy the smell of coffee. The stinky rubber smell interferes with the coffee smell. Even after 5 days of out-gassing the smell was still very unpleasant. I returned it using Bolo’s excellent return policy.
5.0 out of 5 stars As expected
My husband takes drip tray out to accommodate his large coffee cup and it makes a mess on wood surface. I got this to keep it clean. So far so good.
1.0 out of 5 stars Stinks
Like others have said, the rubber smell is over powering. I left this outside for nearly a month to off gas and it still smells. It’s so bad, it transfers the smell to your tamper, hands, or anything that touches it. Needless to say I was forced to return it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great
Purchased this in March 2012 when I moved all the coffee equipment to an oak topped cabinet. Works great under the espresso grinder, catches all of the stray grounds from the grinder. I do get a few specks of coffee in the locale of the tamping mat, no big deal. The tray slips out from under the grinder easily, dump the stray grounds in the trash and rinse it and the rubber mat. They clean very easily. The tamping mat is a nice thickness for a bottomless portafilter. Let's say I forget to grab the tamper before I make the grinds, the bottomless portafilter stays put on the mat with zero problem.Visitors are often impressed with the overall appearance of the "coffee center". It just looks clean, thanks in great part to the tray/mat setup.
4.0 out of 5 stars Thick piece of rubber, does the job!
Update 12-6-2010 (4-stars):I bumped up my review to 4-stars. The odor has dissipated (it didn't take too long to diminish), but when cleaning and moving the mat I still smell it. Honestly its not a bother at all anymore. As for the dark spot left on my counter, with a bit of elbow grease I was able to clean it up and it never came back. The mat is easy to clean and has held up nicely. I highly recommend it!Original Review (3-stars):Ok, I dig this little mat. It is thick, you won't dent or ding your counter. Great to tamp on.But I have to justify a 3 star....1. It does have quite the smell to it once you receive the item, gives it that "made in and shipped straight from China" feel to it.2. Left a tinted, darkened ring on my white counter top. A lot of cleaning products later it is less, but still slightly visible.3. At the end of the day... there are tons of things you could tamp on.Alas, it sits in front of my Gaggia Classic and it ties things together. So I like it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, solved a couple of problems for our coffee making
We had two problems - I wanted a tamping mat and something to make it easier to clean up spilled/overflow grinds. The counter that the grinder used to be on was tile, which I found especially frustrating to clean spilled grinds from. The Rattleware grinder tray solved the problem. We no longer have that problem with our new granite counter, but now we have the grinder on a slide-out tray. The Rattleware grinder tray enables the grinder to fit well and securely on the slide-out tray, and makes it very easy to clean up. And this size tamping mat is perfect for us. It's all we need, and we use it both to tamp and also to knock the grinds out - I usually have no trouble getting the flick of the wrist just right to get the grinds out but for some of us it's easier to knock the basket against something. I used to worry the basket would get damaged or dented, but now we just take the tamping mat and place it next to the sink or trash can and knock the basket against it. perfect! The mat and tray fit perfectly with our Gaggia burr grinder on our Milen Handy Caddy slide-out tray, so I couldn't be much happier with this purchase.
Looks like a high quality product but strong rubber smell…
Smells like brand new tires, even after cleaning, smell remains…Not great in a kitchen…
Rubber Tamping Mat - easier tamping and no mess
Prior to buying this tamping mat, I was making a regular mess of the kitchen worktops (not to mention floor). Since buying the tamping mat, not only am I finding it easier to tamp the coffee grounds, but I seem to be making better coffee and there is no mess! The real bonus is that I have moved from my wife's bad books [almost] into her good books. Well worth it for me.
Nice tamping mat, does the job.
Basic, but a good bit of kit - smells of rubber quite intensely when it arrives, however calms down quite quickly after that.
It's a rubber mat
Not much to say about this, it's a thick, solid, rubber mat that works really well for tamping coffee on without damaging the worktop or the portafilter. You could just use a chopping board but for those that like an item specifically made for the job it's perfect.
Solid, great size
Size is perfect - big enough to do its job but small enough to be hidden away when not needed.Solid rubber, didn't notice any unpleasant scent...
