This was my first foray into tray paints, and I was nervous. I have many memories of painting out of little watercolor trays as a kid, with the little brittle pans of weak color. And to be honest, when I opened up the package, I felt a little like a kid again, wetting my brush and swirling it around on the paint cakes. But I became completely convinced once I applied the paint to the paper. So beautiful and rich, these colors are nothing like the watery food coloring of your youth.The cakes are creamy to the touch and yield a wealth of liquid once wetted. The range of colors is good and I have been able to make a huge variety of blends so far, and I suspect there is an infinite number of color blends yet to be discovered. The case is put together well, and should be easy to carry for people who like to bring their paints on the go. I use mine at home, and I still love the compact case for storage purposes. The mixing tray lid that comes with it? Meh. The wells are tiny and there's barely any room for mixing colors, but there's only so much you can do with that small space. Also, once you're done, you have to clean and dry the lid before closing up shop, because it's the lid - you can't just have it dripping down onto the cakes. I just bought a cheap, plastic butcher tray for mixing, and that works great for me.All in all, a great buy for the price. Do not let the elementary school format turn you off - these will not disappoint.

Purchased this set 2 years ago love the paints vibrant colors, except the non metallic gold and silver that is. Have been enjoying them so much came back to purchase another set but unfortunately I can’t at this time. When I purchased them two years ago they were $20 today they are $48. Inflation has increased the cost of alot if my art supplies that keep me sane but when all you have as income is social security I’m afraid art supplies are no longer in my future.

This is a great little set of gouache for anyone to own.I absolutely love how bright and vivid the colors are, I especially like that they give a cool and warm selection of reds, yellows, greens and blues as well as an ochre and a light flesh tone. Which is important if like me, you are mixing your own additional colors. I have been getting back into drawing and painting so I have been slowly building up my watercolor and acrylic pallettes and tubes and I spent a pretty penny on an artist grade watercolor pallette. Because of that, I didn't have a lot of money to buy the 2 sets of gouache I was interested in. This set had great reviews and a lot of colors available for the price. I expected it to be an okay set but nothing special; a student set maybe which was perfect for me. It is that and more, a good quality student set, but also perfect as an affordable artist grade gouache-like palette for anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with gouache or gouache-like watercolor without going broke :)like others have said, just build your layers slowly and you won't have a chalky finish for the most part. I'm still saving for the Holbein brights gouache set, but these are working just fine for me right now. I was very pleasantly surprised with the rich colors in this pallette. I picked up a gouache titanium white in a tube for an opaque white splatter effect. Overall I think this was well worth the purchase price you won't be disappointed.

Although I have been painting for more than 15 years, I am relatively new to gouache. Before investing in expensive paints I wanted to test if I would enjoy this medium. Although I bought this pelikan set a year or so back but I started using it quite recently and haven't stopped since.Pros:1) Very good quantity of paints.3) Easy to travel with as it's dry.4) Re-wets very easily5) Paint doesn't crack upon drying which I have seen happening with bad quality gouache paints.6) huge range of colors in this set.7) I am able to build the opacity one layer at a time.8) Paints are vibrant and not dead/chalky9) You can use the wells on the lid for mixing so in a sense it's a complete kit.Things to note:1) Given this is opaque paint, we use white alot but this set has very small tube of chineese white2) The White in the set is not at all opaque even when you pick right from the tube.3) I would request manufacturer to add more white to the set . Preferably two kind of white, one for mixing and one opaque.

After some browsing around, I decided to buy this set after I needed watercolors for some projects and couldn't find my old paint set. I chose the Pelikan brand because compared to the Winsor and Newton sets or the 24 color Sakura Koi set, the pans here looked four times as full, which would mean it would last me longer. At first when I received the order the "childish" packaging threw me off guard (it had cartoon elephants on it??). Luckily I knew better than to judge by first impressions and after some test runs, I was extremely pleased at my purchase. The colors are beautiful and blend so well with each other. I also LOVE how it already includes a skin tone color in case you are lazy and don't want to bother mixing colors for it. There's a nice selection of greens and blues, but I was a little disappointed at the colors for brown.The case is kind of weird in that the whole bottom tray is actually detachable if you want, but a plus is that you can also rearrange the pans to your liking with ease.I'll admit that if you are looking for a real portable watercolor palette, this is something that will not fit in your pockets. What I do like about it despite it's longer size is that there's a little space between the pans on each tray where you can place your brushes without having to worry where to put them. There's also a space to the right of each tray where you can even put in a extra paint tube or two in case you want more colors from other brands! I use the space to hold a small Niji waterbrush and a Round 4 brush. Overall, happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend to anyone trying out watercolors!

I love these Pelikan paints. I purchased a box of these over 20 years ago and have used them a lot. They were getting finished so I needed a new box as these are the best paints for crafts and illustration. They have wonderful rich colours and opaque which is what I need them for, for special projects that I have to do from time to time. I am now well stocked and will continue to enjoy these wonderful paints.
