About this item:
The same evergreen tree produces both mace and nutmeg mace is the aromatic golden-brown spice from the dried aril, the lacy covering of the nutmeg kernel. McCormick Ground Mace brings fragrant, nutmeg-like aromas and warm taste to desserts, stews and more. We carefully select our mace for subtle, spicy-sweet flavor. Ground mace adds citrusy sweetness to baked goods and desserts, particularly pound cakes, fruit pies and donuts. It works especially well when a more delicate version of nutmeg s spicy flavor and a lighter color is desirable, like in custards, cream sauces, mashed potatoes, fish and poultry. Meaty braises, roasted vegetables and stuffing all benefit from a pinch or two of mace. Use mace as a one-to-one substitution for nutmeg.

I make my own (British) Mixed Spice for the fall season. I needed some Mace and there was none to be found in town. Not sure if anyone reading this wants the recipe but I'm here to tell you it is so much better than American pumpkin pie spice. I'll share the recipe with you. It's wonderful in all manner of baking or even to mix into cream for coffee.Homemade British Mixed Spice1 tablespoon quality ground cinnamon2 teaspoons ground allspice2 teaspoons ground nutmeg1 teaspoon ground cloves1 teaspoon ground ginger1 teaspoons ground coriander3/4 teaspoon ground maceCombine all spices in an airtight glass jar and keep store in a dark cool place for up to several months.Makes about 1/4 cup of Mixed Spice.

Very hard to find mace anymore in the stores, I purchased for my mom who uses it for her special recipes. McCormick spices are always fresh and are great quality, grateful to find them on Bolo.

Great spice when needed
4.0 out of 5 stars It's mace, like any other. A bit pricey by volume, but in a good size for most kitchens.
Mace isn't a spice many of us need very often, so it is good to have it in a package this size. Two of these little containers, stacked, take up the same space as a usual jar of spices. But you are kind of paying a premium for McCormick's branding. I would love it if this were available in a generic brand (like Bolo's 365), at this size.If you're not familiar with mace, it is from the same plant as nutmeg, but has a distinct flavor and scent. It's among those "holiday-ish" spices, so it's a good addition to pumpkin pie, gingerbread cookies, and anything else that calls for nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and/or cloves – even if the recipe doesn't call for mace (it can be your secret ingredient). But use it sparingly until you figure out a good ratio.Meal-wise, it's a component in various South Asian dishes (e.g., part of a curry mix). I think it's also used in some Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and African cuisine, though I have only dabbled in that direction. Oh, and if you want to make your own East Coast-style seafood seasoning (along the lines of Old Bay), this might be a worthwhile addition. I think most of the distinct flavor profile of that is from nutmeg, though it may also have some allspice in it.
