Flood! (TVM)

Description:

A rain-swollen lake. A small town dependent on fishing revenues. A rivulet of water seeping through the rocks beneath an earthen dam. These are the suspense-generating ingredients of this onrushing, all-star Irwin Allen production. A helicopter pilot (Robert Culp) and a youngster (Eric Olson) first discover the dam's leaky secret. But local leaders refuse to face the drain on the town's troubled economy that draining the lake would cause. A high-and-dry solution is not in the cards. Martin Milner, Barbara Hershey, Richard Basehart, Cameron Mitchell, Teresa Wright and two stars of Allen's smash The Poseidon Adventure, Carol Lynley and Roddy McDowall, all try to keep afloat when the wall of water hits and the special effects kick into high gear. Take a dive into the raging currents of this topflight adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars I had a fun time watching this.

I thought it was pretty entertaining. Kind of a light disaster movie rather than a nerve racking rollercoaster one that would be in the theatre. I'm a big Robert Culp fan, so this was a good one to watch.

This made for television disaster flick is heavy on melodrama, light on any real action/disaster (the event in question happens at night!!! In the dark!!! Where very little of anything can be seen!!!). And it should be noted that Roddy McDowall's appearance is limited to the first few minutes. He shows up briefly as a fisherman to prove the town is desperate to keep their fishing lake intact, come hell or high water. (If he was the sole support of this vacation paradise, yikes!) The plot involves said lake and the town's reliance on it for their livelihood. The dam that's supposed to be keeping said lake in place is springing leaks every hour on the hour. Richard Basehart plays the town's treacherous mayor, willing to do anything to keep people from learning about the peril they're facing. He makes poor Cameron Mitchell do all the dirty work patching the dam, for all the good it does. Martin Milner plays the one and only rational person in the town, willing to question the mayor's lies, in spite of the fact that he's engaged to the mayor's dead pan daughter (played like a zombie by Barbara Hershey). Teresa Wright plays the mayor's longsuffering wife. Other notables in the cast are Whit Bissell as Dr. Horne, Gloria Stuart as Mrs. Parker, Robert Culp as Steve Brannigan, and Carol Lynley (overacting as though she was working it for two people). The best part of this movie is watching Richard Basehart's chilling performance as a sanctimonious liar willing to let the whole town drown just to prove he's right, even when he knows he isn't. His scenes with Martin Milner are fabulous. It's a likable movie but it's not a great one. Still, I'm glad I got it for my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars 70's disaster movie

Don't ask me which version I like more the American or the British version because I love both this doesn't get as deep but it is entertaining to me

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch - if you're a fan of the actors

K.M. · September 14, 2007

I'm a big fan of Martin Milner's, and that's the sole reason I bought this movie. Fun to watch to see Mr. Milner in a post-Adam-12 role, and enjoyed a few of the other cast members as well. As mentioned, the movie itself is pretty cheesy with some cheap looking special effects and some over the top drama by a few of the minor cast members. Thank God for the fast-forward button - some moments were incredibly boring and dragged on and on, but all in all, not so bad, & worth a few bucks if you're a fan.

I already have this movie on VHS. It's a good "disaster" movie with an all star cast. But over the years, I've watched the VHS one so many times that it's wearing out. So I bought it on DVD. Hopefully, it will last even longer. I would definitely recommend it.

Typical Irwin Allen fare. Story okay, acting okay. My biggest gripe is that they never showed the dam. They showed a slope with water squirting out, and they showed water lapping the edge of a pool or something in the rain, but they never backed up and showed a lake held back by a dam. When the dam actually broke, I was looking at a black screen and listening to people yell while they played rumbling and rain noises.

Floody ace

A masterpiece of disaster what was lacked in visual effects like you would see in blockbusters today was more made up for by a great storyline and for the time the effect of the floods and the dam breaking would of been stunning. And when I recieved it I was thrilled to relise it starred Richard Basehart. This is one for those of us who love disaster movies and the productions of Irwin Allen.

The Full-of-Similarities...

ス. · March 19, 2003

A good 1970's Irwin Allen production

A good 1970's Irwin Allen production. Like The Towering Inferno, Fire, a damn bursts its banks after several weeks and months of rain. The Lake has risen too high. The politics of the local town, the Mayor refuse to listen to the warning advice given. Havoc fallows with tragic consequences.

excellent

Early Irwin Allen movie. Drama which shows how to take peoples lives and turn them upside down in drama and escapism. Would recommend this seller to anyone who would wish to find more of this type of film
