  • Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.

I switched to millet as the whole grain part of my diet for health reasons, and I am glad I found this product. It is delicious, and complements most other foods. It is very easy to cook, and clean up is simple. I tried other brands of millet, and this is the freshest, best quality one I have found. Also, it is an exceptional value with a low cost per serving.

I got a great product at a great price. I tend to like millet better than rice, but it's getting hard to find locally (I couldn't find any at all lately) so I decided to buy in bulk. It's nice, it tastes like millet and cooks up well, no problems that I could find. I might have bought too much. But no regrets, it's good quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars Contaminated with a lot of foreign materials such as brown specs and sandy stones.

The previously ordered Millet was very nice and clean and free of foreign materials. The current Millet package contains a lot of brown specs and small sandy stones. We have to screen these brown specs and sandy stones by hands before we can cook. I am very much disappointed. Could you tell me what happened? Why this second package of Millet has a lot of brown specs and sandy stones?I wouldn't be a buyer this product unless I get a good explanation and support from the supplier.Young

I am used to Whole Finger Millet - which is not hulled and with more gluten. So wanted to try this one and purchased the Organic Whole Grains Hulled Millet from Great river. The price was really competitive and the product was delivered on time in a very solid neat box.We started using it for the last few weeks - primarily make different types of salad and porridge almost every alternate day.Found it to be really good - feel very light after the meal.It has more of a bland taste, so we add plenty of other ingredients in salad. While it is not a replacement for Finger Millet that I am used to in India, it is still worth experimenting.

This millet has good flavor and cooks up nicely. The price is excellent. I have bought it multiple times and intend to keep buying it. I have read some reviews that complain about dust and hulls. This startled me. I never assume that a natural grain is ready to cook like Rice-a-Roni or other highly processed products. When I prepare any whole grain, I take a few minutes to pour a cup at a time into a Pyrex pie plate and sort through it for foreign matter and unhulled grains, then I put it in a strainer, shake it to remove any dust or grit, and run water through the strainer to clean the grain before putting it in the pan (or, in the case of millet, toasting the grain in an electric skillet before cooking for better flavor). These simple steps ensure that the millet, rice, whatever is clean and no hulls get through. It's slow food, but slow food is better.
