About this item:
Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from real trees so it burns clean and gives you a robust wood-fire flavor. Some other brands are made from scrap furniture or processed wood. This means less wood-fire flavor. Burns hotter for moister meats!
Because Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from hardwood, it burns hotter. This allows you to achieve steak- searing temperatures. Used in conjunction with a ceramic grill which insulates well, you’ll use less total heat to cook your food which means moister meats. Burns longer for better slow cooking!
Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal burns longer thanks to the hardwood used to make it. Also, you’ll get the right mix of fast-starting small pieces and long-burning large pieces that will allow you to cook low and slow for extended periods of time. Other lump charcoals offer too many cheaper small pieces and not enough larger pieces.
Costs less per use. Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal costs less per use because the hardwood charcoal burns hotter and the larger pieces burn longer. If you close the vents in your grill when done, you’ll also be able to re-use partially burned charcoal pieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value Charcoal for Consistent Grilling
I purchased the Kamado Joe Big Block XL Premium 100% All-Natural Hardwood Lump Charcoal about four months ago, and I've found it to be a good choice for grilling. The box is quite large, offering good value for the amount of charcoal you get. One thing I appreciate is that this charcoal lights quickly and maintains a steady heat throughout grilling sessions. The larger size of the charcoal pieces is also a plus as it reduces the presence of small particles in the grill. While the flavor of the charcoal isn't particularly pronounced in my experience, it does its job well, and I haven't encountered any issues with it. I primarily use it with my Weber charcoal grill, and together they create an awesome grilling experience. Overall, if you're looking for a reliable charcoal option that provides consistent heat and good value, this charcoal is worth considering.
5.0 out of 5 stars They Truly Mean BIG Blocks
I've done about 2 dozen cooks, smoking and grilling, with this bag so far on my Weber Kettle Mastertouch, and I've got more charcoal to spare. I got some crumbs in my bag, but they are truly a negligible amount. What I didn't expect was the truly BIG CHUNGUS blocks in the bag. I never thought I'd have to split charcoal chunks, but here I am doing just that. I wouldn't have to split them if not for cooking in a Kettle, so this isn't an issue, but rather a fact of life. Most of the bag is nicely sized chunks that I can just pop into the chimney and get rolling with a tumbleweed starter. Otherwise, no off-flavors, nothing wrong with the charcoal at all. Will likely be ordering again.
5.0 out of 5 stars Summer grill BIG Block
Love the Big Block charcoal, provides a lot of heat and great taste compared to the chemical infested charcoal from Big brand stores. Easy to get going no need for chemical starting fluids, I use trimmed fat off my steaks and some olive oil as my starting fluid.
4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag but really good stuff
Pieces in the bag I got ranged from gravel sized, to nearly football sized. That said the vast majority were roughly 3 to 4 times the size of a kingsford original briq. Really nice consistant heat and lights really easy. I used it in my offset smoker, burns a little quick but on par with B&B lump on burn time for the similar sized pieces, though it is more expensive. Whats got me, and I'll come back to this brand, is the smoke it puts off. Its clean. Clear blue smoke almost immediately on lighting, no waiting around for an hour for the smoke to clear, this stuff gets hot quick and burns clean. 1 star knocked just for the size inconsistency.
5.0 out of 5 stars tried and tested for 2 years straight
I've been using this coal for 2 years straight and have no issues. I love that the coal burns for so long. My food doesn't have that burnt up flavor like with normal coal. each bag lasts a really long time. the chunks are pretty large and any coal thats not used, can be reused with no issues. will definitely recommend and will continue to use. food taste great, coal lasts long, and no waste whatsoever.
5.0 out of 5 stars The description says “big block”, & they mean it
The description doesn’t lie, this product is big chunks of natural lump charcoal. I’ve bought this product several times now, & I like the performance, & unlike some other brands I haven’t found any rocks or other foreign debris mixed in. The rounder chunks average on the size of lemons to oranges, the biggest round chunks that I’ve gotten were about the size of grapefruits. The longer, narrower chunks are about the size of bananas to cucumbers. Of course some of these pieces get broken down in shipping & handling, but overall, there’s a pretty good consistency of large pieces. The charcoal is made from a blend of 4 hardwoods from Argentina that I had never heard of before, namely guayacan, guayaibi, mistol, & white quebracho, according to the package. Because of this, it doesn’t have a particular flavor profile that you would expect from a charcoal made entirely of familiar American hardwoods such as hickory or oak or mesquite, it’s flavor is more of a gentle generic smokiness. It burns very well, with a nice consistent heat over the course of the burn. For these reasons, I find it best suited to use for making a deep bed of coals in my Weber kettle when I’m cooking several rounds of food for guests, and also in my smoker as a nice consistent heat source after I have wrapped my meat and I’m no longer trying to impart any more smoke flavor. Overall, I’m happy with the product, have bought it several times now, & will continue to buy it in the future.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bad batch?
I've been using Kamodo charcoal in my Kamado grill (exclusively) for over five years now. But the last bag of (rather expensive) charcoal I received contained about ⅓ charcoal dust, ⅓ charcoal debris, and ⅓ very small charcoal chips, with perhaps one or two pieces about only 2-3 cubic inches. Very disappointing. To be fair, this has never happened before, and I hope that it is just an exception. However, now I'm concerned about receiving more charcoal dust/chips and feel forced to consider other options.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality
There are other reviews saying it’s small chunks of lump charcoal. Idk what they were expecting, but this stuff is awesome. Big chunks of lump charcoal. Natural oak. Great smell and flavor. What sold me was the price point. Kingsford and several other brands have jacked up prices………. For burnt wood. Literally could make the stuff myself. However, this brand has remained reasonably priced. For that I tried it. And it’s awesome. I have a 22” Weber. I grill and/or smoke on it probably 3 times per week. Every week.Couldn’t be happier. Kamado Joe, keep up the good work and you’ll have a huge customer base. Unless you decide to do people like the other brands and try to pinch. Great product.
