5.0 out of 5 stars Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz Dog Treats: Potential Benefits with Some Trade-Offs
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz are dental treats formulated to help reduce tartar buildup in dogs. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons to help you decide if these treats are the right choice for your furry friend:Pros:Veterinary Recommended: These treats carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, indicating they have been accepted as effective in reducing tartar buildup with proper use (feeding two treats daily).Long-Lasting Chew: The long-lasting chew texture can help keep your dog occupied and potentially scrape away plaque and tartar buildup as they chew.Dental Benefits: If effective, these chews could help promote better dental health for your dog, reducing the risk of dental disease.Variety of Sizes: Purina Pro Plan Dental Chewz come in different sizes to accommodate dogs of various breeds and sizes.Relatively Affordable: Compared to some veterinary-exclusive dental chews, these treats are a more affordable option.Cons:Unknown Ingredients: The specific ingredients list might be difficult to find. This can be a concern for dog owners with allergies or those who prefer more transparency about what their pet is ingesting.Mixed Reviews on Effectiveness: While some users report success with reducing tartar, others mention minimal improvement or their dog losing interest in the chews.Potential Digestive Issues: Some dogs might experience digestive upset, especially if not introduced gradually. Not a Substitute for Brushing: Dental chews should be used as a supplement to regular vet checkups and proper dental hygiene practices, like teeth brushing.Overall:Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz offer a potentially effective and affordable way to support your dog's dental health, with the VOHC seal adding credibility. However, the unknown ingredients list, mixed effectiveness reviews, and potential for digestive issues are drawbacks to consider. Here are some additional things to consider before purchasing:Your Dog's Dental Needs: Talk to your veterinarian about your dog's specific dental health and if these treats are suitable for their needs.Your Dog's Preferences: Not all dogs enjoy the taste or texture of dental chews. Consider offering a small sample first to see if your dog likes them.Introduce Gradually: Start with a small piece and monitor your dog for any digestive issues.I hope this review helps you decide if Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz are the right dental treat option for your dog!
5.0 out of 5 stars Dental Chews help With Puppy Chewing!!
I have two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies (4 months & 50 lbs each). They are very active and chew on everything. These dental chews are a lifesaver as the chews , while providing a healthy addition to their dental health , keeps them focused on a good way to direct their need to investigate/chew everything in the world. The chews keep them occupied for hours. And they enjoy them even after the initial flavor is gone. I can’t keep them on hand as they disappear so fast. They are a good size for a dog chew. However , I wish there were a few more in the box. There’s usually five 2”x5” chews/box. They definitely are a great product. The picture included in this review was taken about 2 months ago. Puppies are now 20 lbs heavier and in their third set of harnesses and collars. They’ll be around 100 lbs each when they’re full grown.
4.0 out of 5 stars Dogs love these
My vet had recommended these after we paid $700 for dental cleaning. The dogs love them! I give them one every 2 weeks, right before it’s time to wash their beds or give them a bath. Leaves a residue that requires cleaning if you’re letting them consume on soft surfaces. My dogs are 15 and 20 pounds and it keeps them occupied for an hour! Helps with their breath and tarter.
5.0 out of 5 stars Last a lifetime in my house
These last a lifetime in my house (2 small dogs)! My vet recommended these because she said they are soft enough to chew through, but not super soft that they’d be gone in an hour, or hard enough that will crack teeth. They help with dental hygiene/care.I want to say 5 came in the pack and I still have 3 left, after a month. My puppies tend to chew them to a certain point- then stop eating it and will use/play with it like a dog toy.The color fresh out of the pack is yellow, then after they’ve chewed and licked it- it’s white. I’m not sure if the flavor is gone- which is why they quit eating it- but the fact that it still entertains them- makes me happy. This is one they gnaw at all day/night long.
3.0 out of 5 stars Huge and Tough. Big Dogs Only
My 30 lb French Bulldogs didn't do well with these. They are very hard and tough and very big. I was going to cut them, forget it without a saw. Big dogs will love these.
5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible
My dog hears this bag rattling and they come running They love their after supper treat
1.0 out of 5 stars Would like to return
My dog doesn't like them at all. She's never been a picky eater but these she doesn't pay any attention to. Would love to return but had to open the box to find out she doesn't like them!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great for oral hygiene
I used to give my dogs big bully sticks for nightly chewing but after a trip to the oral surgeon for a root canal, I switched to these upon his suggestion. It was a seamless transition from bully sticks to these chews; my dogs go bananas for them. My dogs all have really good breath and even my little Maltese consistently impresses her vet with her oral hygiene. I don’t brush, I give them these chews after dinner every night. I do have to cut them into little strips for my Littles, however some of them are way too thick to cut with scissors so I give those to my big dudes. So these are probably best for aggressive chewers. They are very inconsistent in thickness and size, which works for our needs, but maybe keep it in mind if you’re buying for large breeds. Overall, I’m glad I found something that my dogs love and is VOHC approved. Health starts in the mouth with our best friends.
