5.0 out of 5 stars Mika has done it again!
This is Mika's third official album and even though at first like many I was a bit skeptical at this CD. However, after listening to the CD through its entirety, I have to say Mika has done it again! This time with a different spin to his CD. Like the first two albums, the creativity, artistry, and uniqueness of each song bring out the versatility of Mika. Nothing sounds alike, yet the sound is still original to his style. Origin of Love is in its own way quite meaningful on so many levels from lyrics to musicality. Emily, an English version of Elle Me Dit, is quite playful yet packed a punch in making you pushing that replay button over and over again. Underwater and Overrated are quite ... underestimated and overrated, they are the must listen songs. Popular Song is an interesting take of Mika's rendition of the "popular" song from Wicked. While Heroes and Celebrate are the two songs that end the album on a high note. Lola, Stardust, and Step with Me are the other songs that I have no word to describe. From the delux CD, L'Amour Dans Le Mauvais Temps and Un Soleil Mal Lune are two great songs for even a person with no French comprehension. I love the music and the emotion listening from those two songs! All in all, this is a must buy CD!
5.0 out of 5 stars 3RD TIME'S THE CHARM
Just as I had hoped, MIKA"S third album "The Origin of Love" is exactly the album Mika needed to make. I loved his first two albums but was desperately hoping that he would change his formula for his third release. He has and with great success. There really isn't a clunker in the bunch. He is in fine voice and his uptempo number are fantastic. Right from the beginning with The Origin of Love thru Make You Happy, Overrated, Emily and Celebrate, he knows how to keep his album on track. He still has his fun side as evident on tracks such as Lola, Love You When I'm Drunk, and Popular Song. His ballads such as Underwater and Heroes are beautiful. All in all an almost perfect album. Since coming out earlier in the year, his music seems more relaxed and Mika is finally able to be himself and sing about the things that are important to him. He has grown up and so has his music and that's a huge plus for all of us. I can't wait to see and hear what he does next. A fantastic CD. If you love MIKA, you'll love this.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love it
I've had the first two Mika CD's for years and loved them. When I saw he had a new album out, I had to snatch it. And what a fantastic album it is! I like to say that we went through a "Mika Craze" this summer at my house. I listened to the album, and loved it. Then I shared it with my family. My dad loved it, my mom had it stuck in her head, my sister grabbed it too...at one point, you could walk into any area of our house and hear it playing. My room, my sister's room, the living room while my mom cooked in the kitchen, the garage where my dad was working. It was crazy. It was a Mika Craze. As we were listening to the first track at one point, "Origin of Love" my dad simply stated, "I think this song is just...awesome". And generally, my dad doesn't even listen to this type of music, so there you go.I've listened to this over and over, and still can't stop!
4.0 out of 5 stars Making Hollywood look tiny.
Mika is still a well kept secret in America. "The Origin of Love" is his third album and he still has not hit it big here (but should have already). He's never boring--with all three albums being diverse and entertaining. He is, in my estimation, a master pop tunesmith. Like George Michael, Robbie Williams or even newer artists like One Direction and OneRepublic, he has the talent, training and execution of someone who will be around for years to come."The Origin of Love" finds Mika putting hooks into every song. Whether it's the interesting title track, or the casual "Lola", or the Benny Benassi dancefloor beat of "Stardust", or the metallic "Make You Happy"--the first four tracks are not alike in any way, and yet they all bring the memorable melodies and hooks with them. This isn't to say that "The Origin of Love" is perfect. No, "Underwater" sounds too much like OneRepublic, and "Kids" might be to skippy and light on hooks to qualify as a highlight. "Step With Me" might round out the weaker tracks, but even these three are not weak enough to detract from the overall cohesiveness of the album. They are diversions, experiments that almost hit the mark, but stray from it just slightly."Overrated" sounds like Baltimora's "Jungle Boy", but it's a highlight here. "Love You When I'm Drunk" could be a cousin to the Pet Shop Boys' "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When Your Drunk", and is also quite catchy."Popular Song" is extremely infectious and could easily be a single and fit into several radio formats. "Emily" is the English lyric version to "Elle Me Dit", and the two tracks are, I think, slightly different productions. I prefer "Emily" over "Elle Me Dit", and "Emily" is another potential hit. "Heroes" is solid, and "Celebrate" could easily be another hit.In fact, of the 13 tracks, they all have some potential to have chart success. Mika just needs more exposure and better marketing in the U.S. "The Origin of Love" nearly cracked the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. This means there is a fan base here and the potential to reach more untapped music listeners. The bonus track "Tah Dah" on the second disc could have been the final track on the album (and it is if you shuffle the songs around like I did). All the other bonus tracks are fine. The five acoustic version are pretty decent. The remixes and edits are just okay--they don't surpass the originals in any way.So, once again Mika has turned in another fine effort here. Why does Gotye get all the airplay and Mika very little? Why does One Direction end up on top along with Carly Rae Jepsen, but Mika does not? These things don't make sense. Mika is a trained musician and it shows. He can play, he can sing, he is inventive, he is entertaining--all the things you'd want in a pop star. The one thing he has left to prove is his songwriting. As I said earlier--echoes of George Michael and Robbie Williams, but the difference between the two is George Michael is the better lyricist, while Robbie Williams has relied solely on his pop chops. Will Mika ever write something like "Father Figure", "Faith", "Freedom", "Mother's Pride", "Heal the Pain", "Jesus to a Child", "Outside", "Amazing" or "Easier Affair" like George did? Time will tell. His songwriting is the one thing that could push him into superstardom if he writes something more meaningful. Here's how "Origin of Love" compares with Mika's previous works:2007 Life in Cartoon Motion: Four Stars2009 The Boy Who Knew Too Much: Three and a Half Stars2012 Origin of Love: Four Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love Mika
At first, I didn't care too much the CD because I was so used to his other songs from his first two CDs. They were very complex and beautifully written songs. I finally adjusted to his new style in this CD and now I love it all. In an interview, he described the Origin of Love as being simplified and not as layered as his past CDs. It's a perfect way to describe this CD. It's a bit more like modern pop though. If you liked Mika's style of pop in his previous CDs, it might also take a bit to enjoy the Origin of Love. At the end of the day, it's Mika. So if you love him as much as I do, you'll enjoy the CD.
