5.0 out of 5 stars Easiest Ice Cream Ever

    A.C. · January 12, 2025

Got the Whynter Ice Cream Maker for Christmas and I'm absolutely loving it! The machine is well constructed, with a high quality look. It makes ice cream with a minimal effort - can be as easy as combining cream and/or milk with a packaged ice cream mix. There's no messing with ice and salt or pre-freezing a bowl (the biggest deterrents with previous makers I've had) and freezes a batch in about 30 minutes as advertised. We have already made several recipes and had excellent results with each one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny

We are in love with our ice cream maker! It is incredibly easy to mix all sorts of delicious frozen desserts. (Frozen yogurt, sorbets, traditional ice cream, etc.) It was the highlight of Christmas break.Pros:No pre-freezing bowlSuper easy and delicious included recipesPerfect consistency every time (add your solid chunk mix ins the last 2 mins)Quick batches (usually 30ish min of "freezing" function)Can make batches back to back (clean the bowl and blade and you're ready to go)Cons:Takes up a big footprint. Ours lives in the pantry but on a counter it would take up space.Loud while mixing (If you can have it tucked away behind a door you can't hear it)We will need new belt sizes :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great and quiet!

So far it works great. The icecream is fantastic and super easy. The yogurt making capability is very easy and tastes great. That alone will be worth it. I like that its quiet and less messy than our old style icecream maker with the salt. Plus there's no question when its finished.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth it!

We got this machine for Christmas, and it has helped us create the best ice cream possible (if the 3x $ Italian one produces even better, the improvement would be negligible and not worthwhile to me). The ice cream is very dense and without noticeable ice crystals. We have used 'The Perfect Scoop' recipes and techniques; do age the base overnight before churning, if possible, and then freeze after churning for at least several hours, so that the flavors deepen. I also made coconut-based vegan ice cream and by reducing the base to a very dense consistency (not what the recipe suggested), I ended up with phenomenal vegan gelato. I have now made two batches of yogurt, using Bulgarian strains I bought online, and it tastes very pure; I will likely use the yogurt function more often than the ice cream capability, so we don't gain weight. I couldn't find any reviews on the yogurt function, but I am here to tell you that it works seamlessly well, and I hope to never again buy store-bought yogurt or ice cream. (The NYT wirecutter claimed that the yogurt function shut off early, but that is not what I've experienced.) It is rewarding and fun to make one's own ice cream and yogurt, and brings me and my friends and family joy - highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little machine!

    G.M. · February 1, 2023

The media could not be loaded. Over the years, I've used several different kinds of ice cream makers - sometimes hand-cranked, some with an electric churning paddle - but they've all had either buckets that needed to be filled with ice and rock salt, or a container that needed to sit in the freezer at least overnight to prepare to make ice cream. This Whynter machine is the first I've had that is entirely self-contained. Thanks to the built-in refrigeration unit, making ice cream is a snap. Just prepare your recipe, pour the mixed ingredients into the churn, and press the "start" button. Within an hour, your ice cream is ready to go - either enjoy the soft-serve texture as it comes out of the churn, or pack it into a container and let it sit for a few hours to harden up a bit. Cleanup is a snap - the churn, paddle, and lid all are removeable for easy clean up.The instruction manual is basic but simple (the machine is not hard at all to operate) and it also comes with a booklet of basic ice cream recipes. It really is foolproof and just about any ice cream recipe you have can be made in it. The control panel uses words and icons to tell you what is going on in there and many of the settings can be adjusted to tweak your procedure. It's great fun and takes a TON of the work out of making homemade ice cream. If you're a member of the extremely niche market of people who make their own frozen dairy concoctions, this is the machine to buy.A few observations:The machine comes in a really big box. I was afraid I might not have a place for it in the kitchen. Opening it revealed a foam inner liner and ANOTHER box, the actual box the ice cream freezer comes in. When you finally get the machine unpacked and settled where you want it, I recommend you allow it to stand without starting it up for at least 24 hours. That box might be sitting on your porch right-side-up, but you don't know that it rolled up to you on the truck that way. Letting the unit sit undisturbed will ensure that the compressor won't be damaged when you start your first freeze cycle.Scale your recipes down so that you are using a maximum of five cups of ingredients. Ice cream expands as it's churned, and I've found that if you use too much the ice cream will try to creep over the edge of the churn. The default settings on the control panel have been perfect for my first few batches of ice cream, but as I get more experience playing with the Whynter, I'll probably do more fiddling around with them.It is better to add your "mix ins" when the ice cream is still somewhat soft and removed from the churn and being packed into a container. The churn is very inefficient when adding things like chocolate chips, and too efficient for adding swirls of, for example, butterscotch.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product to make own yummy ice cream

A great product and great purchase for me. Very easy to get started, noise level is very reasonable, user interface is straightforward and intuition based. I made chocolate ice cream and it is very yummy. The product is also very good looking and fit so well in the kitchen.

    Definitely an Upgrade!

I used to have a cheap ice cream maker, the one where you put the bowl in the freezer and have to wait a whole day to make ice cream and that’s if you remember to put it in.This ice cream maker is a dream! Just literally make your base, set it to ice cream and press start! We made Coconut Ice Cream. It was so good, great texture and good recipe. If you’re thinking about an ice cream maker, this one will sure not disappoint.

The media could not be loaded.

    Excellent quality. Works as expected.

This product is probably the best you’ll get for a non-commercial machine. You can tell it’s high quality when you turn it on from the sound of the motor. It sounds like an industrial fridge. Not loud. You can just hear the power of the motor.
