5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Beginner Tank - Well Made - Perfect for Betta's & Shrimp

    M.K. · November 28, 2019

—— INITIAL IMPRESSIONSMine arrived perfectly. Which is more than I can say about the two attempts at purchasing a Fluval Spec from Bolo. The Marineland Portrait is well packaged. The curved glass looks fantastic. Think of it as one big shot glass. It makes the tank feel very high end. Although the glass is of lower quality than say a Fluval Spec V - it is still very clear and very thick comparatively.I have only two real criticism of this unit. My first is about the black plastic cover in the back, as others have said, feels flimsy. Marineland; if you are reading reviews, you should switch this out to a ticket matte ABS plastic. My second is the “clear silicone” on the back divider panel. This is nit-picky, but I think black would have been a better choice. Whenever I look into the tank, it stands out in the back corners.Overall though, this feels like a quality tank. I’ve had no issues with mine to date. I’m very happy with the product. It’s a great looking tank for a desktop. And it looks high end.I do have two recommendations for anyone who wants to hot rod this tank down below.—— MY SETUPI purchased this tank to do my first planted. I’m using “Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum” as my substrate, and then I have some Dragon stone and a dozen plants. The Marmimo moss ball and Frogbit are my favorites. In my tank I have 1 Red Veiltail Betta, 13 Red Cherry Shrimp, 2 Apple Snails & 1 Nerite Snail.—— RECOMMENDATIONSSo - if you wanted a planted tank, you can do better for the lighting. Both the “ONF Nan”o & the “Fluval Plant Bluetooth Nano” will fit the back of this tank and allow you to use the back cover.I purchase the Fluval Nano (shown in my photos) as you get better bang for your buck with it. The ONF Nano might be better looking though. That’s up to you if, should you decide to upgrade. If you are going to have plants, you’re going to want to upgrade the light. The OE light is “Ok” but it’s not going to provide you with the kind of lighting you want to grow things. The second thing I did was improve the filtration. I chucked what it came with, and purchased some foam filter material to fill int he whole back panel where they just provide you a small block of it. On the front, I chucked that charcoal filter and did a DIY water polisher. The water first passes through “inTank Aquarium and Pond Value Pack - Bonded Blue & White Poly Filter Floss Pads 600-square-inches” and then through “Polishing Filter Pad 100 Micron - 1 Pack -Superior Aquarium Prefilter Media - Cut to Fit 24" by 36" for Fresh Water & Saltwater Fish Tanks, Aquaculture, Hydroponics - Made in the USA”In the compartment, I’m using a filter bag filled with Fluval Biomax Ceramic Ring. This is working very well. My water stays crystal clear with the polishing material and the parameters are doing very well with the biomaterial.Like a few other reviewers, I did drill some small holes into the return tubing to reduce the flow for my Betta and to agitate the water in the back panel. This is a MUST DO IMO for this tank. Drill some holes people!—— FINAL THOUGHTSI can’t recommend this tank enough. I’m just some random dude on the internet. But this has been a very enjoyable purchase. This tank provides some solid value for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice nano tank!

    N.K.F. · August 15, 2024

The media could not be loaded. I bought this nano tank a few years ago but never set it up because I moved. I finally got it out of storage and set it up a week ago. I have to say that I'm very pleased with it! It's attractive, sturdy, and well designed. The pump and return areas provide good water circulation. The pump/filter compartment (sump) in the back is roomy enough to add a heater, a CO2 diffuser, and also has room for additional filter media, such as sintered glass bio media. I like the clean look with no equipment in the display tank. The heavy glass lid fits closely enough to prevent fish from jumping out and also minimizes evaporation. But the lid is also designed to slide back easily for feeding, etc.The instructions say not to put the heater in the sump, but I positioned it horizontally at the bottom, under the filter compartment, so it will never be exposed to air during water changes. I added a stronger light because I wanted a heavily planted tank (see photo). It attaches neatly on the back of the sump. I also added a mini CO2 system for plant growth, which hangs out of sight on the back with the diffuser in the sump. The attached video shows fine CO2 bubbles being carried into the tank by the pump.Overall, I wouldn't change anything about the design or quality of this little tank!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tank!

    K. · August 4, 2024

I love this tank! I set it up in April 2024, so have had it for a few months now. For my space, it looks great and is aesthetically pleasing. I only have a betta in it and he loves it. I kept everything original with the tank (filter, light, etc) with some modifications... I turned the filter flow to about half and added a sponge to the output to help baffle the flow. I have it to where it just barely agitates the surface- no stagnant water, but also doesn't push my betta around. The back portion where the filter is actually has a lot of storage! I have a small heater back there (keeps my tank at 78°F), and I added a filter media bag with Marineland ceramic filter rings to house beneficial bacteria. I don't have any problems keeping the black plastic piece on top flat with the 2 cords (filter and heater) like other reviewers have mentioned. However, my only complaint would be that black piece... it's cheap and can be annoying at times when sliding the lid back and forth for feeding. But it's easy to straighten and is fine most of the time. I also added an adhesive lid handle to slide the top back and forth easily. Overall, I think this tank is beautiful and perfect for my needs, but I would recommend some simple modifications to make your fish friend happier.

    Great little tank!!

Great tank! Love the size and I love that the filter and heater are hidden in the back section, keeping the main part of the aquarium clean and open for your fish and plants. This sits next to my desk so I can watch my Betta all day!I will say the water flow from the pump is quiet strong so if you are keeping a Betta turn it right down to the “-“ on the pump, it’s still moves the water but won’t beat up your fish.Super easy to set up and clean, 1 bucket to change the water. I’d recommend to anyone! 👍🏻

pump and light broke within 2 minutes.

    r.b. · August 15, 2021

both the pump and light broke within minutes of plugging in. when trying to add my own same sized pump the back panel popped out of its glue. all in all not made well at all biggest waste of money ever. if your buying don’t expect it to work about all it does is hold water.

    Elegante, funcional, ocupa poco espacio

    G. · October 2, 2018

Works well for single betta with modifications.

I bought this for my male long finned betta. He uses all the vertical space in the tank, which is unusual, or I would not have bought a tank with this small a surface area. The tank has have 1 male betta and 6(+??) cherry shrimp for around 8 months now with no losses, and consistent water quality. I would not recommend it it for anything other than shrimp and betta fish. And if you have a betta, it should not a high energy fish (female, short finned etc).I modified it to suit my fish. Cut out the inbuilt filter and instead use a sponge filter. This gave him gentler flow and more swimming space. I changed the light to something better able to penetrate the tank depths. I made sure when I put decorations in the tank that he has mid and top level resting places. My boy is pretty lazy. He has been in larger tanks in the past (more than double) and does not seem any less active or happy than he is in this tank.

Beautiful tank! Great price got on sale.

Ive had this for 1 year. I waited to review. We've always had HUGE tanks so i know tanks. This is a perfect tank for a betta fish. No leaks after a year. Filter and lights still work like new. My betta has no problem with filter flow. I just turned it down as its adjustable. Got on sale. Very happy with this tank. My betta loves it. Perfect for my 6 year old daughter to watch her fish swim. Great value!!!
