5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Litterboxes (and Nests), Not for Open Cage Floor
I really like Carefresh for my rodents, and I miss the old type that was more chunky than the Complete is now because it seemed to hold the urine better. So I was really excited about the Custom. This is a really good product, and I can see it being great for animals that burrow and need to build up a nest. I thought that my chinchillas and guinea pig would do well with it (they don’t eat it, fortunately). This product holds the urine very, very well because there are huge chunks in it, some of which were as large as 5” across and about 1/2” thick. Unfortunately, I found that this was too chunky for the open cage floor but really great for a litterbox (which my chins have, but my guinea pig does not). I didn’t have to change the litter as often in the litterbox. But my pets tended to push the litter chunks aside on the cage floor and shelves, and then they would wet the bare floor and shelving instead. In the end, I really wanted to be able to use this product. However, I found that it was too chunky for my set-up with more open space than nesting area. I wish there were something in-between Complete and Custom. So, I think that I will get the Carefresh Complete (white so I can see if there are urinary problems) on a regular basis, and perhaps an occasional bag of the Custom for the litterbox.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver! Really Works! Holds off ammonia smell from guinea pigs and absorbs well!
We have three male guinea pigs. They pee and poop and the worst part is the pee! We have tried shavings. Yuck. We currently use fleece bedding for them which has to be changed and washed every 4 days or the ammonia smell gets terrible. We are having neighbors watch them for 7 days while we go away and I thought, there is no way the piggies can live in smell and filth for that long and no way am I going to ask the neighbors to do a full cage clean out. After much review I decided to give the CareFresh guinea pig and rabbit bedding a try based solely on the reviews. Oh my gosh. It's like an answer to my prayers. First of all the guinea pigs really really like this bedding. And second they now intentionally go to pee and poop in the one corner almost consistently! Now the big test: absorption and smell. I am into day 3 and so far there is no ammonia smell!! I go in at least every night or every 2nd day and scoop out the "wet" part of the bedding in the corner where they pee. There's not much, maybe one or two handfuls and I then replace it with a few handfuls of fresh bedding. I also have a puppy pee pad underneath the bedding but so far that hasn't even gotten wet.I am very impressed with this bedding and I think that as far as the rest of their cage goes it won't need a full cage clean out for at least 10 days. Hallelujah!
5.0 out of 5 stars Safe for rats
This is great rat bedding, you have to do research on “safe” bedding not all are safe
4.0 out of 5 stars Comparison of 5 bedding options for guinea pig
Here is a comparison of 5 types of bedding options I've tried for my guinea pig. Carefresh is my top choice for odor control, absorbing moisture, and ease of clean up.1) EZWhelp puppy pads - Trying to save money with this reusable option, but unfortunately the guinea pig's fur started turning yellow because it needs more "stuff" to brush up against his legs and absorb pee off them. The pads were very wet to the touch and leaking a little because the guinea pig peed so much. I suppose I could have put in some towels on top to add absorption, but by this time I was tired of having to clean hay from my washer and pet hair from my clothes. The guinea pig also would step on his poop and get it on his paws, so I had to be vigilant about removing the poop. I give these a 2 for messiness and not keeping my pet clean.2) Aspen shavings - Cheapest bedding. Nice woody smell. Not very good absorption - I can see wetness on the bottom of the cage when I scoop it. Depending on the brand, you may need to watch out for sharp pieces of wood. I give these a 3 for lack of absorption but good odor control.3) CritterCare - The little pieces feels hard like cardboard. They also get compacted easily and poop stays on top, which means the guinea pig steps on poop and frequently gets it stuck in his paws. Wetness shows up clearly so I can remove soiled bedding easily, and the odor control is pretty good. It expands about 2 times the volume after you break up the chunks with your fingers. I give these a 4 for good absorption and odor control but poop on paws.4) Carefresh - It is similar to CritterCare in wetness absorption, expansion, and odor control. Pieces are much softer and doesn't get as compacted than CritterCare although occasionally, poop still gets stuck on his paws. I don't like the blue bedding because it dyes his privates blue (not healthy). I give these a 4.5 for good absorption, odor control, and texture.5) Kaytee - This is shredded tissue paper which expand 3-4 times the volume out of the bag. At first, I was so excited because it looked and felt like soft, fluffy snow. It does seem to keep the guinea pig's fur and paws cleaner. Unfortunately, this stuff gets very messy on your carpet when it's on its way to or away from the cage. The pieces are so thin and small and tend to fall all over the place. It also tends to clump together, making it difficult to separate the soiled spots from clean bedding. Moreover, the Kaytee bedding doesn't have much odor control or hold moisture very well as I can see liquid on the bottom of the cage under wet bedding. I give it a 3 for comfort but messiness and odor.
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect and unscented
Good pet bedding for a hedgehog. Unscented is getting difficult to find. Glad to have this product.
5.0 out of 5 stars Not as soft as some, but lasts for freakin ever
I was at first bummed when I got this bedding bc it was not near as soft as the other kind I get. But after using it, I realized it absorbs insanely well. My hamster has dedicated a space to burrowing & a space for waste. I would only need to replace the waste space like once a week, and the whole bedding like every 2 weeks. Idk if my hamster has much of an opinion on the difference. She doesn’t like her cage to be changed much tho so she probably appreciates we don’t have to do it as much.
5.0 out of 5 stars It's much better than the shredded paper
I use this all the time for my rabbit's litter box. It's much better than the shredded paper. I actually mix it in a bucket (half and half) with lavender scented Kaytee granule blend (more costly). The paper is good filler, but alone is not absorbent enough, and not good for odor at all. The mix works great.
5.0 out of 5 stars Mouse approved
I use this in my mice’s cage. It is long lasting and makes cage cleaning an easier process. It’s soft but also sturdy. My mice are able to create tunnels through it which they enjoy.

Soft and absorbent
Was soft and absorbent. Not a lot of odor control and can be pricey if you have multiple pets.Worked well for our single bunny.
