5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT, TRUST ME
Wow!!! I just got my lens in the mail today....I have tried out soooo many lenses....and this lens is by far the sharpest. I've tried the L series lenses, USM, Tamron, Sigma etc..etc...all those lenses are great too...but this one is simply sharper than all of them!!! I have read complaints about the focus ring being stiff, I think that is better for accuracy in manual focusing. I have the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 and I wish that focus ring was like this one. Being stiff or tighter plus having a long throw (about 1 1/2 to 2 turns) gives you a wider spectrum so to speak to hit the sweet spot. It is all manual focus and great....AMAZING for portraits (being manual focus it is not preferred to use for action sports i.e the fast movement of subjects) It is sharp at every f stop...it has a sturdy build, the lens hood is removable and overall performance of this lens is amazing!! If you are not comfortable with manual focus you should give it a shot esp if your camera has a manual focus aid or manual focus peaking etc. I have the Sony a7rii and I can focus quicker on a persons eyeball or face quicker than I can with my Canon 85 1.8 and my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. There are reasons photographers prefer it over auto focus for portrait photography because it allows full control over where and what is in or out of focus. It also makes you slow down and be more precise rather than hitting the autofocus and taking twice as many images at times. I can go on and on about this and I usually just give ratings don't really write reviews, but I am writing this one so anyone who reads this it is unsure about buying it etc...do it!!! For only around $500...this lens could easily sell for $800 to $1,200 and I would still buy it. I am doing a photo shoot tomorrow and a Birthday shoot on Saturday and I'll update this with the images from those shoots. Sorry for such a long review but I felt it was necessary
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic lens. I've been using this for astrophotography and ...
Fantastic lens. I've been using this for astrophotography and it's yeilded very good results. The lens is heavier than I thought it would be, throwing off the tracking a bit. There is very little vignetting even wide open at f/2, chromatic abberation is minor as well. The focus ring is smooth, hard to nudge, and bracketed at infinity making focus very easy and less annoying than other focus rings. It has a manual aperature ring with no way to control through the camera, which is fine for me. The lens hood it comes with is a little loose and jiggles with no way of locking it in place (that I've discovered). It produces very sharp and amazing images during normal use (outside of AP) with a satisfying amount of bokeh. Due to its field of view (with APSC) it's not ideal for portraits and the like, but does great at smaller objects or distant objects. Overall a great lens for a comparsbly cheap price.
5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous image quality for amazing price for amateur astro
Fantastic image quality for deep space objects with astrophotography at an amazing price, cant recommend enough for amateurs like myself. The colors come out beautiful and it’s so much easier to edit in post processing, with very little artifacts and other blemishes. Even for regular everyday use its just so crispy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Nice lens for astro and portraits.
I missed when this lens was quite a bit less expensive last year but it does provide crystal clear images of the night sky. Seems well made but some complain of inconsistent results so be sure to test your copy out asap.
5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for astro!
This is my go-to lens for deep-space objects or even just the moon. It's manual focus so you should use the LCD and zoom in to get a good focus before shooting. It's hard to tell in the viewfinder. It might look like you're in focus and find out you wasted 3 hours because none of the pictures are actually in focus. Other than that this lens is excellent. Takes super crisp pictures and is a very fast lens. Definitely recommend to step up your Astro game.
4.0 out of 5 stars The Famous Budget Option for Astro
This Rokinon/Samyang 135 ƒ/2 ED UMC is an extremely popular lens choice for widefield deep space imaging. Compared to many alternatives, it offers a respectable amount of optical quality relative to its price, and the reliable, manual operation suits it well for this task as an adapted or mounted lens. The main issue? As is often the case with Samyang/Rokinon, there is a fair amount of copy variation. The quality of one lens can vary a fair bit compared to the quality of another of the same type.I purchased mine during a sale at a nice price, and tested it under the stars. Unfortunately I didn’t get a great copy, and I had no option to exchange it. I could only return it (meaning an exchange would cost me the full retail price). So return it I did, and that’s the end of my adventure for now with this lens.I have seen enough work with good copies of this lens, however, that I know I was just a bit unlucky.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best lens for wide-field astrophotography
Excellent quality. It was easy to use with my DIY frame and electronic focuser.
5.0 out of 5 stars the astrophotography standart
sharp in the corners at f4.......still fast enought
Well built sharp lens.
If you don't mind using a manual focus lensthis lens is a great choice. Well made, very sharp with good contrast. Highly recommended. I added a 71mm tripod collar which I find to be a very useful tool in holding the camera steady while focusing ( 71 mm is a little large so I used a thin piece of adhesive padding which allowed a perfect fit).
Bang for the buck
A must have for astrophotography, providing a good compromise in term of zoom and framing. The wide aperture allow for good frames, even with small exposures for not top notch, even no tracking device. I recomand using a bathinov mask to assure sharp pictures. On regular usage, it is also a great lens for the price, manual focusing might seems a bit scary, but there is ways around it (successive closing shot, choosing the best one).Overall it's pretty solid, most of what you pay is for optic and trusty buid, on the other hand, no automatic aperture or focusing. As it's quite heavy, an attachment on the lense itself for quick plate fixation would have been a big plus for the sake of balancing, be carefull of the tripod/head you use with this.
Save a $100 and get the Samyung lens, it's the same thing!
Excellent lens for astrophotography. Remember to check the infinity focus when you first use it, it will be off a smidge, and you don't want out of focus stars, not like I got when I took pictures of Comet NEOWISE, omg I was pissed! But the lens when it's in focus is perfect!
Worth the money
This is an absolute light bucket, catching quite a lot of detail in short exposures. Star shapes are very much in line with a classical refractor, even at F/2.8. Focussing is very precise
highly capable lens
A good professional manual lens. Image quality is great, solid built, great deal for the price
