Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXX

Description:

For those of you who have one (or possibly 30 now) of the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 collections, please skip to the third paragraph. Welcome new friends. You've heard about this show, possibly read an article in a magazine or seen it referenced on some other show you watch: but what exactly is it? Basically, it's a show about a guy and his two robot friends aboard a space ship who are forced to watch old, cheesy movies by mad scientists. To get through it, they make wisecracks during the movies, a comic call-and-response. It was on TV for ten years. There's a feature film, too. That's the gist of it. You know enough now. Read on. Okay, we're back on for four more of you know what, with you know who getting all kinds of nutty. Enjoy. Titles Include: THE BLACK SCORPION, OUTLAW (OF GOR), THE PROJECTED MAN, and IT LIVES BY NIGHT.

I started watching MST3K when I moved out of my Mom's house in 1993 when I was 18 and therefore finally had cable (it was the first thing I spent money on when I moved out, lol). I found the show by accident when I was watching some stand-up specials on Comedy Central and this odd "public access" type show came on afterwards. I was hooked by the shows intro alone! Then along came JOEL and the Bots and that was it, I was a fan, telling everyone I knew that they had to watch the shows. Pretty soon I was taping episodes to watch when it wasn't on and to show to other people...even my Dad got hooked. That's how I found out there was a movie out...my Dad called me one day and said "I'm picking you up after work, be ready, there's an MST3K movie at the University Cinema. I thought it was going to end up being a fan made thing, but no, it was a real movie! I was shocked that I hadn't seen a trailer by then but after I saw the movie I started seeing the commercials all the time, turned out that the college cinema had the movie early and was playing it before they were supposed to.1st off, it's Mike, not Joel (the movie and it's idea is why Joel left, sadly) but, that's OK, as I'm a fan of both Joel and Mike (but NOT the Netflix shows, the bot's voices are terrible as are the skits...enough with Patton Oswald, already!). The movie chosen, "this island earth" ended up being a fun watch. The skits between the riffs were perfect, also "Mike broke the hubble!! Lol). All in all, this was a perfect episode turned into a perfect movie.I bought the digital copy bc I have it on VHS, DVD, & bluray, I might as well finish the set, right? (Plus it was only $4.99 to own and I would have easily paid $15 for it.)Any fan of the show will love it. Anybody who's never seen the show will become an instant fan. Buy it, watch it...and keep circulating the tapes (and turn your lights down, where applicable)

5.0 out of 5 stars MST FANS : THIS IS GOOD THIS island Earth

D.W. · March 21, 2024

This is also called MST 3000 the movie. In this movie the inhabitants of the satellite of love are viewing a science fiction, movie entitled “This Island Earth.”According to some people, this movie was too good to play with, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching.Shenanigans from Crow start it off. I had a guest watching with me who had never seen MST and was not prepared. He only made it about 1/3 of the way through and had to stop because he was laughing so hard, he couldn’t catch his breath. Sure to be rewatched.

4.0 out of 5 stars "So The Aliens Live In Hooterville?"

R.I.H. · May 24, 2009

Filmed at Energy Park Studios in St. Paul, Minnesota, this Mystery Science Theater 3000 big screen adaptation of 1955's "This Island Earth" will tickle the fancy of any aficionado of the show, fan of science fiction, or lover of comedy. The plotline is essentially unchanged from the brilliant TV show, although sets are more extensive and costly. In this iteration Dr. Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) taunts his test subjects Mike Nelson, Crow T. Robot (also Trace Beaulieu), and Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy) with the classic sci-fi film about atomic power, aliens with giant foreheads, and huge mutant insects, in an effort to break their wills, an effort that, predictably, fails."This Island Earth" follows Dr. Cal Meacham (Rex Reason) and Dr. Ruth Adams (Faith Domergue) as they journey to the planet of Metaluna with giant foreheaded Exeter (Jeff Morrow,) who is on a mission to save his home planet from destruction by meteors. The Metalunans are much advanced over humans, but need the help of Meacham and Adams for purposes of obtaining uranium to shield their planet from destruction. The thing that's most interesting about this film is that they spend a whopping total of about five minutes on Metaluna before Exeter, Meacham, and Adams start back toward Earth. It's like they go to the planet, tell the ruler "no, we won't help you" and promptly leave. All this makes for a movie with a very short running time and even with the MST3K host segments the final product is only 74 minutes long, which is a bit of a disappointment considering the original unedited version of "This Island Earth" is 87 minutes long. The choice of material was controversial both within the MST3K camp and with fans. The film was readily and cheaply available, but was viewed by many as not as strong a choice as could have been made as "This Island Earth" is viewed by many sci-fi historians and fans as a classic of the genre and something of a good movie. Certainly the film is not among the worst that MST3K has skewered ("Monster a Go-Go" anyone?) and as a result the riffing is weaker than a normal MST3K episode. Don't get me wrong, there are some great lines from Nelson and company: "Suddenly I have a refreshing mint flavor.", "Hey! It's a moth equipped with a lightning bug!", and my personal favorite exchange after seeing the wacky Metalunan architecture that so resembled dreadful album covers from the 1970's, "It looks like Dr. Seuss designed their planet....They're really into 'Yes' on this planet."While I like the film, this is the first (and likely only) time I can't give five stars to an MST3K production. While good, the riffing and host segments weren't as funny or wry as their best efforts ("Manos," "Hobgoblins," "Mitchell," etc.), and the film lost some of it's low budget charm when dressed in the trappings of a Hollywood release. I certainly like the movie and recommend it, but still believe that it could have been so much more than good; with the right movie it could have been great.

I like MST 3000 a lot but this one keeps me laughing thru the whole movie. Very clever dialogue. Worth the rental. I still hear new stuff at each viewing.

Very good laugh

This movie was i think one of the first if not the first mystery science theatre 3000 (or MST3K) efforts - and its one of the best, given that they are able to take the mickey out of a well loved sci fi film of the 50s, this island earth, which has so many of the 50s SF tropes:- mysterious inventions, square jawed hero, screaming heroine, interplanetary travel, monster for the heroine to scream at. Tbh we cannot view this film in any kind of pre critical way now that the team of mike, crow, et al have had a go at it. The basic - and lovably daft - premise of MST3K is that a msd scientist has trapped mike and robot friends on a satellite whehe he proceeds to force feed (or force view) them 50s USA (mainly) SF films as some kind of torture, which they, while watching, ridicule mercilessly to our delight and hilarity. Enjoy.

MST3K: The Movie on BluRay

m. · March 10, 2018

THIS REVIEW IS FOR MST3K: THE MOVIE....Ordered on Monday morning and it arrived Friday morning, so that was great because it was shipped separately from my other item. I have wanted this movie on BluRay for a while, so I am super happy with this purchase. This movie never fails to lift my spirits with some sillinessCase comes with the two disks (one BluRay and one DVD). The movie looks great, crisp and clear. The movie is full screen (it is from 1996).There are NO subtitles. There are no language choices. The extras are fun for geeks like me especially when it comes to the ideas that they had and how they evolved into the product we got. I am pleased that they added in lots of extra stuff on a movie that is over 20 years old. The two documentaries are current (2013) and cover production of the movie as well as the history of the source movie "This Island Earth".And then there are deleted scenes, which just add to the fun, and my personal enjoyment :)5 stars because I suddenly have a refreshing mint flavor

5 Sterne für Metaluna 4

M. · August 15, 2014

Great updated copy

It’s a great show. Just enjoy it.I have the DVD and they really cleaned up this island earth compared to the DVD.The “live” scenes are better quality too but not as noticeable as

The silhouettes look great!

J.M. · March 29, 2016

Movie: 5/5This is Mystery Science Theater: The Movie. It's well written, and despite being hacked apart in editing due to audience testing response as fans know, it's very funny.Video: 4/5The host segments look beautiful. You can see the strings on the robots very well and easily identify the materials use on set, and I love it. This Island Earth however, is clearly the same version they filmed against and not taken from the Blu Ray remaster of the movie which has been released outside the UK. It's grainy and a shame they didn't or couldn't get a better version re-cut for the movie, but it still looks better than the DVD version. The silhouettes look great though!Audio: 5/5Sounds great to me.Overall: 5/5Naturally, MSTies are going to buy this, and there's every reason to: it looks beautiful! But, as others have mentioned, the extras are lacking; there's a 5:16 "featurette" in standard definition (a brief behind the scenes / what is MST3k dealio), a 1:40 trailer and a stills gallery. That's it. Still, hopefully we'll get more and better now that it's coming back.
