About this item:
Cheeky, bright, precocious. A half-full cup of wake up and wise up. No joke here, this is just a bright, chocolaty concoction for the smart-thinking, deep-drinking, good-at-their-game-in-the-morning crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Medium and tasty!
Upon my delivery of the product being so tightly sealed and vacuum packed, I knew that this coffee was ultimately fresh and it was definitely packed nicely for Whole Bean. Upon grinding my beans and making a pour over, (V60) I had a nice medium cup with a hint of light in it. I’m guessing that maybe there’s some Ethiopian or Guat mixed in, but I’m not sure.. but overall this coffee is yummy! If you drink too many cups, you might become a smart ass! Haha
5.0 out of 5 stars Why the 5 (Five) Stars
Well because the competition it was up against was significantly worse. The venerated SF BAY Coffee: Fog Chase in my opinion was a burden to the eye, a sting to the nose, and a cough for the throat. I am not a coffee aficionado and I can honestly and with pride admit that I am terrible at descriptions regarding taste or smells or anything really. The latter merely states that I know I am an idiot. So if you would please allow me to apologize in advance for the mediocrity of the following descriptions of the vastly superior (to 1 opponent) Kicking Horse Coffee: Smart Ass, I shall continue...I payed money not for coffee but for an experience or, to satiate the senseless covid ruminations, a hobby. The bag seemed fine with its minimalistic intentions but could do some updating. There’s a lot of unnecessary text that can’t be entirely removed or replace with a hyperbole that your coffee makes horses kick or something of the sort that will make it more probable that the consumer will memorize your brand name and share it in a conversation. But as my scissors cut through that plastic the aromas I’d these coffee were enjoyed throughly. I wanted to make a candle out of it since the smell mattered to me so much. Start grinding and your hit once again with an orgy of different smells which exacerbates the impatience of waiting until the coffee is done and cool. And as I drank the first cup I immediately knew I liked it. I didn’t know why but I knew this was some good coffee and continued to drink it until it finally induced me to make this review. I have been trying to deduce what exactly of this coffee do I like? So I go drinking multiples cups disregarding time which led me to succumb to herbal ;)teas to treat my insomnia. Until finally one day, this day, right know, I knew why i liked this coffee. It was the taste. It took long hours trying to decipher what in the hell this coffee tasted like. What tastes like coffee? But it was darn good. Until it hit me. It tastes exactly how it smells. Plus its smooth as butter. That’s it. That’s a covid epiphany.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good Beans - Not Mind Blowing
These are definitely some good coffee beans. Purchased and tried as these are one of the highest rated coffee beans on Bolo. I've started becoming a bit of a coffee snob, mostly brewing my own coffee with good drip brewer, so based on recommendations wanted to try these beans. Honestly, they're good, but not mind blowing. Definitely a medium roast on the brighter side, as advertised, which is my preference, but that said, I found it to be pretty average. We have several coffee drinkers in the house with varying preferences, so we always have quite a few different brands on stock. Having purchased just the 10 oz bag to try it out, everyone was certainly satisfied with it, but I wasn't sure it was worth the price. As a test one morning, I used the "Kicking Horse" for the first pot and cheaper (but still decent IMO) Bolo-brand Columbian blend in the second pot, and I asked two of the other coffee drinkers in the house if they could tell the difference... They couldn't. Not exactly a scientific test, but reinforced my opinion. It's good, but not mind-blowing.At $30 for a 2.2 lb bag which isn't that bad, there are plenty of other options in the $12-$20 range that I personally think are just as good, or even prefer. I'd buy again for sure if it's on sale, but my experience with it was that it's not worth a premium price tag. All that said, the price isn't crazy, and it did brew a good cup of coffee, so I'll give it 4* and wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rich flavor
Rich full bodied flavor for medium roast. Truly enjoyable with a heady aroma.
5.0 out of 5 stars Dependably one of my favorites
I've tried several of Kicking Horse's beans and never liked any of them, they always seemed over roasted with no nuanced flavors to be detected. I tried this Smart Ass on sale locally and it has become one of my favorites. It makes a good espresso and Aeropress cup. It's strong, but not burnt tasting and has subtle blueberry notes. I'll always buy new coffees from smaller roasters (Lavazza owns Kicking Horse) to try now and then, but I love this as my dependable go-to, especially since it's usually less expensive than the competition.

Doesn't really taste too good for our taste
5.0 out of 5 stars fresh medium roast goodness
This is my 4th Kicking Horse order from Bolo. I was motivated by the pandemic to mail order beans, having usually gotten them locally. Each order has been a win. I first tried Grizzly Claw, then Kick Ass and now Smart Ass. Having had the dark roast beans for months, I wanted something different, hence the Smart Ass medium roast. As always, I bought the whole beans and then ground them with a burr grinder. For a medium roast with my drip maker, I start with a medium-fine grind. In this, my first effort, it seems to have been the right setting. I would describe the coffee as smooth, low acid, with a mild, nutty flavor. I have had more flavorful medium roasts, but this suits me fine and is a good break from the dark roasts. I will play around with my method to see if I can brighten the coffee up a bit. The order was delivered the next day, which was great. The vacuum in the bag was strong, as it has been for each order. I think their packaging has everything to do with being able to deliver consistently fresh coffee by mail order at a decent price.
