These were awesome. Our kids absolutely loved them. They do make a big mess but so worth it. The crystals in them were very nice we did get some colored ones. Instruction are in box. We did drill a whole in one and it was easier to open up. Definitely wear the eye protection because pieces do fly everywhere. So much fun for any kid who loves crystals or rocks!

My son loved this activity - great for rock/geode loving kids and those that like to smash things! They were not overly difficult to break (for him). Inside were mostly the clear crystals but we got a beautiful light purple and one that had black and white. Gorgeous! We had 9 proper geodes and 1 rock. Not bad and he had fun smashing the rock too. Great for learning to work with tools, safety, and appreciating nature. He's excited to look for geodes on our next road trip.

I bought these as a fun project to do with my kids and they did not disappoint! Four of the five rocks were beautiful geodes, one was just a nodule. The nodule was extremly hard to crack... Nothing my husband, a metal punch, and a handheld sledge couldn't handle! We will polish the inside for a nicer look. The other rocks were realitively easy to open... My seven year old was even able to crack one! They recommend the sock method, but if you want nice clean breaks I would not go that route. All in all, I am very satisfied with the product we received and will buy again!

Please wear the safety glasses (we did and were thankful as a piece of rock hit the glasses and could have been his eye) I gave it 4 stars because 2 of the 5 were felt extra heavy and turned out more of a solid crystal formation and was not able to be broken open (we are looking to get something to maybe cut them open). Otherwise it was a lot of fun and very beautiful… a bit messy but in a good way. BTW this was for my 40something husband… not just for kids.

I bought these for my husband and our grandson (3). They had a great time hammering away on the rocks and revealing the crystals inside. While my grandson had fun using the hammer, in the end it took some concerted effort from my husband to split the stones. Beautiful crystals inside. We kept half of a stone, adding it to our rock garden and our grandson took the other half home with him. And we have more stones to split at a later date. Win/win. Worth the buy.

These geodes are great for getting children interested in geology and science. My grandson loves to smash these with a hammer. The generally break in just two pieces (sometimes three or more), and the revealed treasures help to spark creativity. For instance, my grandson did some studying about the different crystals he discovered in these geodes, and he made a video talking about them with great enthusiasm. He named the different types of crystals and some of their properties, also demonstrating how he opens the geodes. In short, this set is a great way to get a child interested in crystal science.

The media could not be loaded. Three of the 5 rocks were not hollow. While they had pretty white crystals inside, they were not hollow. I knew when I started hitting on them with the hammer and chisel (recommended way according to instructions) that 3 weren't hollow. They were VERY hard and took a LONG time to break into them. I was frustrated, because the larger stones were the ones that were not hollow. I was hoping for some amazing crystal formations, but nope.

Our grandaughter saw some geodes at a nature center and went gaga over them. So, I ordered these rocks and got her an appropriate sized REAL hammer to break them open. She had a blast...worth the price for sure. Close supervision of course.
