5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, solid, fantastic
I was a little nervous after some of the reviews talking about the button on front and the switch in back. I dont get it, the switch on the back is easy to push on and off and the button on the front works just fine as well. Via Itunes I tested this against an LG BP50NB40 slim. I ripped a rather Large Norah Jones CD (forgot which one it was). The LG took 3 minutes 19 secs. The Asus took 2 minutes 7 seconds. The extra speed is making the cd ripping process much less painful. Could see the extra speed show up when ripping a dvd via MakeMKV as well. I also like that that opening it is electronic. After the CD finishes in Itunes, I just click the eject icon with my mouse, pop in a new CD and hit the front button on the Asus and off it goes. Super happy with the purchase. On a side note, and I will need to see if there is a way around it. I planned on using one with MakeMKV (since you can select which blu ray device to use) to rip my movies for plex, and then at the same time use Itunes and the Asus to rip CDs. Seems Itunes wont recognize the Asus while Make MKV is ripping a movie. Odd.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well with Mac OS!
When buying this product, I was really concerned how compatible with MacOS. Thankfully I can say that you can do anything you'd want to do with this product except watch Blu Ray movies, in which you'd need to buy third party software to watch them. But I did not buy this product to watch BluRay movies. This product can successfully burn files on any kind of Blu Ray media, you can rip CDs and watch DVDs as well. MacOS has a built in DVD player, but not a built in Blu Ray player. This product also can write media on rewritable BluRay discs, and you can rewrite those Blu Ray discs at any time on MacOS.I have not had any errors after burning files on Blu Ray discs, both with 100GB M-Discs and 25GB Rewritable Blu Ray discs. Using this product is truly plug and play. I did not have to install additional software in order to start using it. Given I've gotten this "like new" refurbished product for $60 from Computer Headquarters INC with all the accessories and manuals, and the machine does everything I need it to do at an amazing price!Just to note, when the CD, DVD or Blu Ray is in the drive on Mac OS, you must eject it from the computer rather than pressing the eject button on the drive. But doesn't diminish the value of the drive whatsoever in my eyes. If you're looking for a Blu Ray drive for your Mac OS to burn files and also want to use it for Audio CDs and DVDs, I can wholly recommend this!
5.0 out of 5 stars Works fine... Sort Of
As of: 03/2024, the drive is fine. Once in a while it won't read a disc, and once the computer is restarted it'll work. Although that could potentially be the operating system, but on a Mac, that kinda seems unlikely. To update firmware, you need to be on a Windows machine. That's so 2000's. If you're a Mac user, find a friend with a windows computer. The drive door seems to rattle at times making you think it's the drive mechanism, but it's just its thin plastic door. And the gears for the door opening and closing gets a little noisy after about two months. I might try and put electronic grease on it later. For digitizing my DVD/CD library to a NAS... AWESOME! With MakeMKV these two are a awesome combination. The speed is great too. It blows those thin, cheap, push to close three times, drives we are all used to now. This one is a full automated tray (open & close) like they were when CD-rom drives first came out.The power button on the back is terrible; they tried to make it carved and angular like the design of the case, but that makes it hard to grasp and slide it on and off. Also, there's a HUGE blue LED (1.5") on the top that says "Ice On Fire." At night... IN YOUR FACE! They could have saved money by not having all that fancy designing elements. Looks very 80's inspired. All that said, for what I'm putting it through (constant ripping) the drive is worth it. For a once in a while drive... get something cheaper.
4.0 out of 5 stars Works great for my Ultra HD DVDs after mod but hate the buttons
The "mod" is a quick firmware update hosted on the MakeMKV website. I downloaded the updater and the new firmware file, and in 2 minutes I had a "new" DVD player that reads any type of DVD in the world. It can also read and write those dense long storage life M Discs without any mods--a bonus for archival storage. That said, I will still give it one star off for the poor design of the power switch and the eject switch. They are both mechanically awkward. I don't know which is worse. The power switch is a horizontal slider that has no real spot where your finger can get some traction. I was forewarned by someone else here on Bolo, so I knew what to expect, but I have to show other members of my family how to use it.The front ejector button is my most hated of the two, though. You just never know when you press it if you hit the sweet spot or not. Even after using it 50 times or more, I still can't tell. Press--wait--press a different spot--wait--try again in another place--wait...So I'm VERY happy with this drive. It's fast, runs well, and does what I want it to. I just think the two switches are kind of an ergonomics fail. But would I buy it again--definitely!
5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent
So I have bought several other less expensive external CD,DVD,Blueray drives in the past and had many issues with them. This bad boy is the BOMB!! It reads every disc I put into it even the double-sided ones (reads both sides after flipping it over). It even reads the ones that made a grinding noise in my other drives. I have zero issue with this drive. I have used almost 300 times since I bought it and it has a 100% success rate and is still going strong.
Works great!
I really like this drive because my wife can use it on her Mac & I can use it on my PC too! Works great & I easily recommend it!
ASUS Powerful Blu-ray Drive
The ASUS BW-16D1X-U Turbo Drive Blu-ray Writer has worked flawlessly since setting up, (which was dead easy btw). It has 16X writing speed and has USB 3.0 connectivity.. It caters to BluRay disks, DVDs and CDs also, a great all rounder. I'm a film/video post production professional and I have to admit I'm a bit of an ASUS sort of guy, and have an edit workstation built around ASUS hardware.. so it was the first brand I checked out on looking for a BluRay burner. - absolutely 5 stars!
Lightning fast disc reader.
This Blu ray drive is the fastest I’ve ever had. But although it has a usb 3 port, it came only with a usb 2 cable. So I bought the usb-c cable separately.
Excelente
En la parte técnica es lo q yo buscaba, muy buenos acabados y uso muy versatil, la entrega excelente estado y antes de la fecha prometida, lo utilizo con windows 10 y windows 11 sin problema
