Humidifiers are essential devices during the winter, both to help prevent illness and reduce static electricity that can cause havoc with your electronics.Over the years, I have tried all three types of humidifiers (evaporative, steam, ultrasonic) and have found evaporative is the best for the following reasons:1) Steam (warm moisture) humidifiers are VERY expensive to operate. As much as an air conditioner, in my experience. NO GOOD.2) Ultrasonic humidifiers leave white dust all over your home. NO GOOD.Evaporative humidifiers cost MUCH less to operate than steam units and don't leave dust like ultrasonics.Yes, you have to replace the wicks when they stop absorbing moisture and yes, you need a good bacteriostatic water treatment like the Essick liquid. But those requirements are still cheaper and easier to deal with than those imposed by the other types of humidifiers. For some time, I used a Lasko 1158 recirculating evaporative humidifier, which did a great job of extending the life of its wick by pumping water from the reservoir and dripping it down on the wick.Unfortunately, the Lasko's build quality was just so-so, and the machine was quite loud in operation.I had previously owned a Vornado Evap40 unit and considered buying another. But that machine is quite an old model at this point, and it also made a loud "GLUG GLUG GLUG" sound as its jugs emptied. So I decided to try this newer large-room model from Vornado which sells for around the same as the Evap40 but includes some welcome improvements:1) Its DC motor uses less energy, but that's not such a big deal given that we're just dealing with a fan blowing air through moist wicks. Fans don't use that much energy anyway.2) The machine shuts off automatically if the jugs run out of water. This helps extend the life of the wicks by keeping them from drying out prematurely.3) An energy saver mode is included. The fan comes on and off at a very low and quiet speed. Unfortunately, though, I found that even though I add bacteriostatic liquid to the water, after a few weeks the humidifier started putting out funky smells when I used it on energy saver mode. Apparently, at the very low speeds, the fan doesn't blow enough air through to keep the wicks moist enough. So I stopped using energy saver mode and haven't had a problem with funky smells when the unit cycles on and off at turbo speed. In addition, this humidifier is very easy to clean; all the parts lift right off the bottom water tray. The two water jugs each hold a gallon of water, and they're well designed. They fit under a kitchen sink faucet for easy filling, and their tops seal closed well. Each jug has a handle that makes it convenient to carry. In Turbo mode, the humidifier puts four gallons of water into the air a day so you have to fill the jugs twice a day. Finally, the machine is relatively quiet in operation. No GLUG GLUG GLUG noises, and even at the top fan speed the motor makes just a gentle whir, unlike the agrarian roar of the Lasko.I should mention as well the attractive modern design and compact dimensions. Now for the bad news: after three years on the job, the humidistat in this humidifier failed. (For example, at a humidity setting of 50%, the fan keeps running even though my two outboard humidity meters in the room read 60%.)So I applied to Vornado for warranty service and encountered a new problem. Apparently, the company was then out of stock on the EVDC500, "and we don't know when or if it will be back in stock." This is important because they don't actually fix the machines but simply replace them, so my only option was to choose from two other models offering respectively a smaller capacity or older technology.IMO this is NOT an acceptable solution, and previous positive experiences with Vornado have led me to expect better from them! Fortunately, I put my warranty request on hold and a month or two later found the EVDC-500 back in stock. I put through my request again, and eureka -- I just received a brand-new EVDC-500 today. So ultimately Vornado stood behind their product, replacing the actual model, and good for them...PROS:* Low energy consumption.* Very quiet in operation.* Easy to clean.* Water jugs easy to fill.* No white dust around home.* Attractive design, compact dimensions.CONS:* Warranty protection may not mean replacement with the same or better model!!!* Wicks must be replaced when they lose absorbency.* Bacteriostatic treatment recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save yourself the aggravation

On the plus side, this humidifier takes up little room, is easy to refill and clean. I’ve not had any problem so far with leaks, and the noise level is perfectly fine.On the negative side, even running continuously this unit cannot possibly humidify a 1000sq ft room unless it’s raining out, and even then…our bedroom is roughly 400sq ft and I can’t get humidity past 30%. Other evaporative units I’ve owned did just fine (and if I hadn’t been looking for a smaller footprint I’d have kept my old Honeywell) so I know it can be done. Also, even with filtered water I am blowing through filters like crazy. I feel like I bought a razor handle…I am constantly buying expensive blades, so to speak.Bottom line: good form factor, quality build, but crummy performance. Would not purchase again and unless you’re humidifying a closet I wouldn’t recommend this unit.UPDATE 1/4/2023 Reduced review to 1 starThe unit must have heard that I hadn't had a leaking problem because this morning it started to leak for no discernable reason. No location change, no visible cracks, the tank spring moves fine, there's no debris clogging anything, and the unit hasn't been moved (yes, it's flat and level too). Tellingly, a call to Vornado Customer Service got me an immediate replacement unit without even having to explain the problem fully. So...after 1 month+ (in which I have had to change the wicks twice, even using filtered water) can I really trust this thing not to leak again, or the new one to not start leaking randomly? Clearly this is a known Vornado problem based on the myriad reviews I've read. If the good folks at Vornado are reading these reviews, I'd be very interested in a concrete response.UPDATE 1-24-23So the company didn't replace my unit at first. To solve my leak problem they sent me a new tank and base. Leaking continued randomly and the unit began shutting off randomly even in continuous mode. From reading other reviews this is a common problem. Contacted Vornado folks who were very nice and this time sent me a new unit...after I emptied my existing one, and sent them a picture of the base serial number tag AND a snipped power cord.5 days later I got a brand new machine...that shuts off randomly and flashes its "I need water" light while the tanks are >3/4 full. Yes, the humidifier is on a flat solid surface. It's also level in all dimensions. Knock on wood, the only thing it's not doing right now is leaking. Of course it's not humidifying particularly well either...I have sent them a detailed note to ask what we can do to resolve this and will share the results. If you're reading this review in its entirety, I refer you to the top of the original review where I state that it clearly doesn't humidify the size space it claims it can cover, so even if all these other failings did not exist, the bottom line is that it will not do what it needs to do for you in a large room in my experience to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars THOROUGH Review of product MONTHS after purchase

    M. · October 2, 2024

I often review products several months, sometimes up to a year after buying the product. Too often I read unhelpful reviews written within days of purchase/use that say things like “looks good, can’t wait to see how well it works!” Or Works well, high quality!.” How can someone give a 5 star review before turining it on, or make comments about quality after using it for a couple days. Although Bolo prefers quick turnaround on product reviews, I like to write mine months, sometimes longer so that I can give more accurate, time tested, thorough reviews. The things people who are spending good money on a product, need and want to know.Okay that aside. I absolutely LOVE this humidifier. My mom purchased one a couple years ago and loves it. Whenever I would come over, I would comment on this unknown fresh smell that I couldn’t place. Eventually, I attributed it to the freshly humidified air coming from this machine. So I purchased my own. My apartment in the winter gave me dry skin and I bought a thermometer that said the humidity was in the 20’s. So I bought the same exact model as my mom and it has made my dry skin disappear. The air feels comfortably humid. Plus it’s so simple to use/clean. I change the filter once every 4 months and clean the reservoir every fourth fill up and have experienced zero issues with mold or bad odor.

A really well designed evaporative humidifier

    B.S. · January 24, 2024

I'm writing this review after using this unit for over a year.Like all evaporative humidifiers, this device is composed of lots of separate pieces, and requires a fair bit of manual ongoing work. But when you buy an evaporative humidifier, this is what you're signing up for. Thankfully, this Vornado unit is really well designed, and all the pieces are of high quality. The fan is very strong and efficient, and can operate from a quiet level to a loud one. The touch controls work great, and the humidity sensor seems to work well.It would have been nice if the tank could be top filled instead of having to pull it out and fill it from the bottom each time, but unless you have a hose handy, it's not a big deal.Unlike smaller units, this device really pumps water into the air. It can do a gallon is less than a day, which is great for a small apartment.I recommend this unit to anyone with a small apartment who wants a humidifier that actually does the job.

    Energy efficient and accurate

    L.X. · November 7, 2020

The EVDC500 is a cool wick evaporative unit, so it doesn't leave the white mineral residue "cool mist" units do. Since it doesn't heat water to generate steam, it's more energy efficient and the humidity is more natural. The unit works well and maintains precise humidity levels between 40% and 60% - normal household range - adjustable in 5% increments. It's well made and intelligently designed. Here are the pros and cons...Pros: modular design, easy to take apart and clean; simple settings, easy to use, set and forget; DC motor is energy efficient, quiet "eco" setting. Fast, friendly, customer service.Cons: fan is noisy on high setting; evaporator wicks need seasonal replacement; tanks are made of fragile hard plastic, must be removed for filling, will break if dropped. One of the tanks on my unit arrived with a crack - not a result of shipping. Customer service FedExed a replacement which I received the next day, no questions asked. Now that's what I call reliable customer service,Update: The unit works perfectly after several months of 24/7 use (humidifying my guitar room). No problems at all, so I've upgraded this review from 4 to a well deserved 5 stars.

Two Broken Models - Now Three!!

    A.R. · January 10, 2023

I have now received two broken devices in a row. The first had totally unresponsive controls. The second has only partially responsive controls. I'm giving it one last chance because I trust the Wirecutter recommendation and I like the energy efficiency. But what a pain!Edit: Just received a third broken unit! I now see others have the same problem in the reviews. It just shuts off after a minute or two regardless of the humidity in the room.

    This one is a keeper!

Last year, I bought EV100 which went straight to recycle bin because of technical issues - wick wouldn’t get wet no matter what!Apparently, it was a known issue based on reviews on Bolo (US)! But, we threw out the box before using it for first time! This time, even though there are tons of complains with small cracks on its tanks, I decided to give it a try - without throwing the box!Thankfully, everything is 100%. No cracks and wicks get water perfectly. However, it’s ugly! I liked EV100 / 200 design more than this one! It was unique and kind of reminded me of Star Trek stuff! LOLThis one is not that bad though. I can live with it as long as it works. The energy saving feature is nice to have considering Vornado’s smallest fans use over 20W!The wick is kind of expensive and this one requires 2 = around $12 ~$18 depending how seller feels like!! I bought 5 pack for $12 and good to go until Spring!I wish we could fill the tanks from top instead of removing them completely and take them all the way to sink! Many similar products have switched to top filling.Closing the tank’s lid, you must be extra careful and don’t overtight them or - YES, you will break them - or cause those tiny little cracks = water leakage! All in all, I recommend this product. If your room / entire space is about over 600 SQ, get this one. If smaller, the EV300 should do. Those numbers advertised by manufactures are not accurate. My apartment is about 1200 sq (2 bedrooms) and humidity is about 35% - default setting + energy saving enabled. Also, keep in mind these stuff are much safer and cleaner than ultrasonic humidifiers. Most important, you don’t get white stuff all over your furnitures or your hair!We still use ZeroWater to make sure filters last longer, less cleaning and safer air to breath!————————————-*** Update as of Aug 2023:I told you it’s a keeper! Looking forward to use it during upcoming Winter and many more to come! I was looking to buy some filters because they are cheaper at this time of year! When Winter hits, the price goes much higher - so I thought update this review from 3 years ago!FWIW, Fan is no problem and not noisy unless you live in a small place and close to it. We always set it in energy saving mode so it runs whenever it feels like it. Tanks are safe and still look like new!
