5.0 out of 5 stars Premium quality, potent flavor
I'd order a larger bag if I could. Dried Shiitake mushrooms are a staple in my pantry and cooking. I am most impressed by the homogenous quality and sizing of this package. I don't need to search for matching mushrooms, I can just grab a handful of mushrooms from the package and be confident that they will rehydrate and cook at exactly the same rate. They are perfectly dehydrated, so they are also easy to crumble or chop in their dry form (no tough stems).
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent flavor and texture for dehydrated mushrooms. Very similar to fresh.
The media could not be loaded. I grew shiitake mushrooms for a couple of year, and these dehydrated mushrooms are as close to fresh as you can get once they are hydrated. First of all 16 oz. of dehydrated mushrooms is a lot of mushrooms. Shiitake mushrooms are a very meaty mushroom similar to a portabello mushroom, and are best when cooked. The mushrooms in this package do include the stems. When growing these mushroom, I always removed the stems as they are very tough. I froze the stems in baggies to be used to add flavor and richness to broths. Since these mushrooms include the stems, it may be best to cut them out before hydration. You can cut them out with a scissors and save them for broth. They will hydrate and add flavor to your broth when you simmer the bones. I wouldn't use the stems in stews or soups as they are not edible and would be difficult to pick out.As for hydrating these mushrooms, I would recommend soaking them in cool water, after rinsing, for at least 24 hours to get the best flavor. You can hydrate them in hot water for less time, but the flavor and texture won't be quite as good. The soaking water smells wonderful and is good to use as a mushroom broth. It also adds a lot of flavor to broths and gravies. The mushroom broth (soaking water) can be frozen in containers for later use. To use these mushrooms after soaking they should to be cooked either by sautéing them or adding them to a recipe. I like them best when sliced and sautéed after they have been hydrated.I used these mushrooms tonight, and sautéed them with onions and portabellas to go with steak. These mushrooms were very similar to the portabellas in flavor and texture, and the taste exactly very close to the fresh shiitake mushrooms I used to grow. I would recommend these mushrooms as long as you dehydrate them long enough and remove the tough stems. Since shiitake mushrooms are very dense, they take much longer to hydrate than most dehydrated foods. In my opinion, nothing beats fresh, but these mushrooms are a very good alternative when fresh is not available.I hope this review was helpful for you.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great flavor, some a bit chewy
I buy dried porcini and chanterelles all of the time, but this was a first. The shiitake at my grocery stores are not very fresh or flavorful, and I only hit the Asian store periodically. These are great for the price. I rehydrated them for 3 hours, first a low boil, then a low simmer, then I let them cool down. Cutting out the stems was cumbersome, but I don't like them because they're usually tough. I used these sliced up in a soup, and some had the perfect texture, but some were chewy. Next time, I might rehydrate them overnight. The flavor is excellent!
5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality Shitake
I can't claim to be an expert, but these shitake are a great addition to stir fry and soups, and even work in spaghetti sauce and the like, and they are always there in the pantry if you need them. They stay perfectly usable for a very long time.
5.0 out of 5 stars Flavor and economical
I regularly bought in other places s smaller size bag the stems are still intact . I end up paying for the weight of tough stems which need to be discarded. This product it’s stemless. Soak in water after couple hours just cut in slices. It’s got the shiitake mushroom flavor and with the bigger bag will go a long way. It’s a must in Asian cuisine
5.0 out of 5 stars 1 lb. Mushrooms
Worth every cent! Love these!
1.0 out of 5 stars Inedible and I have two bags! Plan to give them to the squarriels!
Inedible even after soaking overnight, microwaved until boiling and resting for hours! Unbelievably bad!
3.0 out of 5 stars Unable to use as intended
These mushrooms came well sealedand packaged. However, in cooking, we were never able to get them to soften up enough to chew them pleasantly.Instead, I am currently using them to make broth, thankfully with great success.
Quality and quite a low price
Very good mushrooms. Fragrant. Ideal for soups Meat dishes, etc. Delivery was on time. There were no problems at all.
Very yummy
These mushroom are small but very aromatic and taste very good when stir fried with oyster sauce. You might find it a bit chewy if you soak it only for a couple of hours, soak it overnight will make it very soft to bit, don't throw the soaking water, heat it up and add a teaspoon of miso paste and will turn it into a very tasty miso soup! I'm very pleased with these dry mushroom.
Delicious
These taste amazing. They do seem expensive but so many fit in the package that I would say it’s close to the price of fresh mushrooms at this point, so worth it.
Taste great
I like the taste better than fresh mushrooms, especially in fried rice.
Good for everyone
It's taste good but you have to rince it longer to remove the sand. It's chewer like hard meat. It contains many minerals good for our body.
