5.0 out of 5 stars A good option if you need a softer disc

    L. · March 31, 2024

I happily used another brand’s regular-size softer/sensitive cup for a few years until I got tired, literally and figuratively, of excessive blood loss during shark week and had a hormonal IUD put in. I didn’t want to risk dislodging the IUD with cup suction, so I switched to a disc. The CORA soft disc is the first one I tried, and now, after my…sixth? cycle with it, I feel like I’ve gotten the hang of it well enough to review. In the early days, I wondered if I should’ve ordered a regular firmness disc instead, because it did NOT want to stay put. I don’t know if I’ve gotten better at it, or my body’s more used to it now, but now, I usually only have to adjust it after number two, instead of trying to re-insert three times after every minor bathroom visit. Could this be made easier with a firmer disc? Maybe, but…I was not really prepared with how much contact I’d have to have with my innards. The disc goes Way Up There, unlike with a cup. I have a connective tissue disorder, so Everything In My Body Hurts All Of The Time, and, based on my previous experience with a firmer (regular-firmness lol) cup, I think that having a firmer disc would be excruciating for me. As it is, I have some pressure sometimes from the CORA soft disc (e.g. when it’s been in but needs to be adjusted), but it’s less than what I had with the soft cup I was using (and I switched from a regular-firmness cup to a soft one for a reason and that reason was pain and pressure). There have been a few times where I’ve lost my grip on the disc due to the water-based lubricant I use for insertion getting under my fingers (and also having hands that don’t always do what I want them to), and that’s uncomfortable enough. I think a firmer cup…no. Just no.(If you’re new to discs/cups, use a good not-runny water-based lubricant with it. It will improve your quality of life. Just make sure you don’t put it where your fingers will be holding the thing.)I will say that I do miss being able to record how much volume I’m losing. I can’t tell what’s half full or 2/3, and sometimes it auto-dumps. This is becoming less of an issue, as the IUD is doing its job, but it kind of bugs me that I can’t hand over consistent data to my gyn like I could with the cup.I’ve seen varying answers for how long the disc is supposed to last than the cup—two years, or 10. The disc is much thinner than a cup, so I’m leaning toward it lasting closer to two than 10, especially since even though my flow is lighter now, I’m still needing to use the cup for close to two weeks at a time (shark fortnight). (That, at least, is data I can report to my gyn without needing to know exactly how full the disc is.) I’m considering ordering a backup, just in case this one gives up the ghost when money is tight. The soft disc has little vent slots like a cup does—which eases my mind about the suction issue—but oh wow do they get more gross than the vent slots on my cup did. My end-of-cycle sterilization measures clear it up, but soap and water (and scrubbing at the slots for five minutes) isn’t cutting it for the mid-cycle slots gunk. Like, do I need to Waterpik it?? It’s not a dealbreaker for me (yet) but might be something to be aware of. I usually rinse with cold water, then use soap, then rinse with warm water before re-inserting, and otherwise haven’t had issues with staining so far. Just the gunk in the slots.I haven’t had much of a problem with losing the disc or the rim getting turned around so I couldn’t reach the little grabber part, which has been a relief. However, I am physically disabled & not out climbing mountains or discovering new lands on horseback, so if you’re the sort of person who runs 30 miles per week in addition to working overtime and taking a gourmet cooking class, you may have a different experience. (For doing walks/roadside trash pickup and yoga, I’ve had no problems.)My rating is really 4.5 stars, but since I can’t give a half, I’m rounding up to 5, because higher-volume reusables have been a lifesaver after 25 years of the physical drain and social embarrassment of excessive flow. I wish my teen self especially had had knowledge of/access to cups and discs. The medical side of it is an ongoing situation, but products like these have changed my life for the better. Is the CORA soft cup a perfect product? No, but I don’t think there is an objectively perfect product. It makes things manageable for me, which was my goal. I chose the CORA soft disc because it was one of the softest options, and even though it has perhaps more of a learning curve, having less pain/pressure with use is worth it. If you’re in a similar situation as me and have the money to at least try this one, I think it’s worth it.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't think I'd like this

I've always been a pad user, I absolutely hate tampons. I'd seen a lot about people switching from tampons to the disc/cup but never pad users, so here's my two cents. I also got a disc that I tried but it was a little too wide and the cup is much smaller and more comfortable to put in/take out. I don't feel it at all, and I get zero leaks. Definitely a million times better than pads, there's no period stink and sitting on the toilet waiting for the clots to finally come out. I can easily wear this all day at work and not have to worry if I bled through or not.

This review is for the ladies with heavy flow. The idea you could wear this cup for 12 hours is a joke for us. If you are one of those ladies who can, you have no idea how lucky you are. I, on the other hand, am in the unfortunate club of women that lose a gallon of blood every time Eve shows her bloody face. That “couple tablespoons of blood per cycle” thing is false information in my world and out the door the second Eve lands. I have to dump this disc every hour for the first 3 days at a minimum. Every. Stinking. Hour. Now, if I had a sugar daddy and could lounge around at home all day for a week every 23 days (yes, every 23 days!) then that would be fine for this disc. Trying to remove this disc every hour to dump it at work though is not feasible. Sitting in bathroom stall with hand looking like I just slaughtered a goat by ripping out its neck doesn’t feel very “put together”. That right. Compared to dumping a cup this is a much messier experience for me. Oh, you can try to clean yourself up in a public bathroom stall…sure. You can bring a water bottle to rinse your disc and your hand and try not to splatter blood drops on your clothes….but the odds fall every hour ladies. Can you make it through 8 murderous disc dumps, spot free, in one work shift?? I think not! Then comes the hidden hand walk to the sink as you have to scrub the blood out of your manicure. Praise the Lord most women at least understand the BS we have to deal with each month. So why would I still give it 4 stars? Well it’s better than the Luna cup I was using for a few reasons. That cup was making me cramp, leaked a little, and pinched my urethra a little making it so I couldn’t pee without pushing, and never fully empty my bladder. It held about the same amount of blood, maybe a tad more, but I was a pro at the hourly dump. My hand only looked like I dribbled some ketchup vs murdered a goat. Easy TP clean up. The disc however, is much more comfortable. I honestly cannot feel it all, where I could feel the cup. It also has zero leaks. Peeing is normal too!My personal solution is to wear this disc when I’m able to work from home and for days 4-6 when Eve chills out and backs off the flow. If I have to go to the office I have to wear the Luna cup and I wear the cup at night on days 1-3 as emptying this disc in the dark every other hour left my bathroom looking like a scene from Psycho. My husband actually woke me up to make sure I was alive after he found that surprise the next day. Whoops. Sorry babe.So there you have it. Super comfy disc, zero leaks, no peeing obstruction but teeny tiny capacity for us heavy volume ladies. That small capacity leads to one hell of a mess and makes this one a no go for road shows while in phase 1.#JustWaitingOnMenopause

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite disc ever

I had pixi disc, does not work for me, every time i took it out the out side was bloody and i knew that it wasn’t flipped over, so it seemed like that it moved inside which i think its bc of oval shape, anyway i tried Cora disc and it works great no leaking , and because of its round perfect size its placed just at the right place, im so satisfied with it. Perfect for work, ceremony, school and of course doing vigorous workouts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works, but I need a different option.

This was my first time trying this and the first impression was amazing. Easy to place, comfortable, and I didn’t leak. I always go through many tampons and still always leak. The problem was the finger loop was too hard to grasp and I went through war trying to get this thing out. I used it for 3 days and the removal did not get easier. I’m ordering the diva one with the pull loop. Maybe it’s my fingers that are too short or it’s too high sitting on me, but the removal was too difficult for this one to work for me.

    Amazing!

I normally don't write reviews about products but oh my goodness. This is probably the best product I've been able to find. I had been looking at more healthy and cost effective feminine products for a while now. I always shied away from menstrual cups cause I thought they were yucky and/or they were uncomfortable. I just bought this and I swear to you...you cannot even tell you have it in. Most comfortable thing ever. It is 100% worth the money and I feel so much better. I don't know if anyone else has experienced discomfort with using tampons on their monthly but I personally have. That doesn't exist with this disc and is such a relief. It's comfortable, easy to clean and easy to use. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because although it works very well it is not 100% leak proof. I recommend if you use it to wear a liner as a "just in case" as sometimes a few drops do leak through sometimes but other than that absolutely great product!
