5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money, this isn't a "Little Bear"
It's not one of those cheap Chinese preamps from AliExpress, though it may bear some superficial resemblance. It has actually good components with good layout inside. It has very good sound and very little noise and hum (not audible at all when the volume is set so that the surface noise of a clean, nee record is audible loudly). Much better than the built-in preamp of Pioneer PLX-500, and similar Hanpin products. It's not 100% flat, but in a good way and subtly, it makes the music sound better. The details are much clearer and the soundstage is way better than with the built-in preamp. I grounded mine to the ground pin (not the L or N pins!) of the wall outlet because my turntable does not have a ground connector, and grounding the preamp to the chassis of the amplifier or to the shell of the USB port on the turntable made the hum worse. This is the configuration that has no audible hum for me. But it's whatever works best in your case - it may be amp chassis, it may be the TT ground, or it may be no extra ground. The blue LEDs under the tubes - why they always do it, I have no idea. But at least in this case it is actually dimmer than the tube glow and looks pretty good - it comes out a lot brighter on the camera than in real life. The power cord is a bit short (about 1m, maybe less), so that could require an extension cord or a power strip.
5.0 out of 5 stars Moving Coil vs Moving Magnet cartridges
Let's jump right to the most glaring bit of misinformation floating around the reviews here. Several reviewers here are stating this pre-amp is for moving magnet type phono cartridges only. NOW I can't speak for ALL "moving coil" carts, but my, Denon DL 103, moving coil, has no apparent (audible) issues with this amp. None. Sounds perfect. I've been transferring my Vinyl to bits and my disk recorder (records like a tape deck but to a CD) was getting really low levels. I could correct this after the fact with SW with no quality issues, but it was awkward. This amp was just the boost I needed. (no gain control on the recorder) SO the selectable output level switch is nice. I'm ok at the lowest, better at the middle, and just a showing a flicker of red on the highest. This was first time I'd ever seen level-leds show any red. Bottom line, Great little amp for the $. Works with any modern, quality cartridge/turntable.You'll notice the instructions don't say jack about "only moving magnet", but the input is labeled "MM". perhaps that's where the confusion sprang from. Fosi may have done that simply because moving magnet are typically less expensive and hence are likely to be what most people will have. The other thing the instructions don't say what input on your main amp/receiver to plug the output from the fosi into. It's just says "connect to your amp" for the record it's Line In or Aux, NOT phono. I plugged mine direct into the line in on my recorder and returned to the amp from the recorder.Lastly Packing. Several guys groused loudly about packing. Mine too was shipped in plain thin, bubble wrap-type bag. But that's fine the way the tubes are packed inside the Fosi box, you could drop the box from 5 feet(ish) over and over and not damage anything but the outside of the box.Final tip. Installing the tubes. They go in pretty tight. So once your sure you're lined up correctly don't be afraid to lean into it a bit.UPDATE MM V MC cartridge compatibility. To be clear, at first listen, THIS particular amp, SEEMS to be fine with at least one particular MC cartg, my Denon DL-103 MC-type cart. No distortion, no hum. Output level perfect, (best on the middle gain setting of 3). But after applying a more critical "ear" I'm not convinced I'm getting all of the clarity and or fullness this legendary DL-103 is famous for. NOW there are a couple possible explanations for this that don't involve this "amp v MC cartridge compatibility" issue. Age of the cartridge being first. While it's well under the life-span limit in hours played, it IS 10 years old. Also, I have never checked, let alone adjusted, the turntable vs tone-arm for level, so there's every reason to assume this (aka "VTA") setting is not optimum. I was shocked to learn how big a SOUND difference this, the angle of the stylus to the groove (VTA) can make. (follow up on that to come) What I can say for now is that the combination of this MC cart and this amp 'sounds' correct, if not "super'. and after playing it last night for about 6 or 7 hours it doesn't appear that either the amp nor the cart is being damaged by the other. If you're wondering if your MC cart will be similarly content with this amp, be advised the "Recommended Load Resistance" on my Denon DL-103 is "100 ohm or more, (except when a transformer is provided)" I believe transformer is what some MC type carts refer to a pre-amp as. The manual for the Fosi X2 doesn't give any ohm rating, load/capacitance, resistance rating number of any kind, input or output. Bottom line this could be a viable "budget option" amp for at least some, MC type carts. Since "proper" MC pre-amp/transformers, start about double what this one costs and run as much as 4 or 5 times more expensive.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised.... Nice Sounding, Nice Looking, and Good Value for the Money (IMHO)
The media could not be loaded. I first purchased a low-budget JANCANE pre-amp thinking that it would be all I needed.... Unfortunately, it was sub-par in my book.... So I stepped up a bit and ordered the Fosi Audio Box X2 Phono Preamp. The item came well boxed, and everything was in tact. Easy to put the tubes in, and easy to hook up....I am using it for a 1971 Sansui SR-1050c Turntable into an Onkyo TX-SR806 Home Theater Amp. The sound is warm and fairly dynamic... I haven't tested it on a lot of LPs yet, but the ones I have tested sound very good... Running vintage turntables into modern day digital processing amplifiers, probably isn't the greatest set-up, but until I finish restoring my Marantz Amplifier, it will have to do....A couple things I should mention.... The blue LEDs that light up through the underside of each tube, looks pretty cool IMHO.... I am using the highest gain level on the pre-amp (45db), but I'm sure that some LPs would sound just fine on the lower settings. For some reason, the Phono input on my Onkyo amp sounded very distorted, so I am using the CD input with no problems. Lastly.... I like the fact that the pre-amp has an on/off switch... Sounds trivial, but the JANCANE did not have one. I rarely leave product feedback, but I felt that this product deserved a good review.... I am quite happy with my purchase....Thanks and Happy Listening ! ... Rick Scouler
4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for boosting a turntable to use with modern speakers
*** MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE RIGHT CABLES TO USE YOUR TURNTABLE WHEN YOU ORDER THIS ***Bought this to replace a very large and VERY heavy old stereo unit that I used to drive speakers for my turntable. I really like it! It has a smooth and even sound quality and is very easy to use.The included tubes warmed up quickly and I like that it has multiple gain settings to boost to the right amount, though I would honestly have preferred a smooth turning dial.I am not a fan of the inputs/outputs. It has one 3.5mm jack on the front that is Input only, a red/white input on the back and a red white output. I had to jerry rig some spare cables together to connect my turntable as it only has one output in the form of red/white cables and the speakers I have only have input as red/white cables. So that is a bit of a design oversight but not a major one.Other than that, the design is very sleek and simple and it's pretty idiot-proof. I am a fan of this purchase. So far it has been very good and I will update later if there are issues with it.
Um produto que necessita de um upgrade ja na compra
O pré-amplificador atendeu todas as minhas expectativas.
Great starter preamp
Originally had my Technics SL 1600 connected to a Yamaha RX-V3000 receiver that has a built in preamp. I wasn’t impressed with the sound so I switched to an Arcam Solo Mini that sounds amazing for CDs. There was almost no sound coming through the Arcam and I realized it doesn’t have a preamp. A little research brought me to a cheap solution with the Fosi X2. The Fosi did the trick, very punchy sound with an option to adjust the gain. A few records sounded a bit dull but upping the gain added life to them. So far I’m using the original tubes which seem to work fine. Hard to explain the sound but I find it’s big and punchy but perhaps missing some mid range finesse. This seems like an affordable option as a starter preamp. First and foremost it works well and improved the sound of my TT. I imagine in time I’ll likely try other tubes and perhaps eventually upgrade to a higher end preamp. For now I’m enjoying re-listening to my vinyl collection and looking forward to testing the Fosi through my Yamaha. Apparently most receivers, even fairly high end ones, have only basic preamps installed.
Opened up the sound
This perform better than the inbuilt phono stage of the turntable or the onkyo receiver. The voice is warm and pleasent. A good stylus with the phono preamp is a must if you have a turntable.
Great improvement to sound depth and quality of vinyl output
Having recently setup a Pro-Ject T1 SB turntable to go alongside some of my Sonos speakers, which includes an in-built pre-amp, I noticed a lack of depth to the sound output and in particular, a lack of volume available through the speakers.Having done some research on external 3rd party MM preamps, including Pro-Ject's own products, I found some good reviews of the Fosi Audio X2 Phono Preamp, so ordered it yesterday and it arrived by 10:00 this morning (Bolo at their finest! lol).Anyway, it was completely straight forward to setup using my existing phono cables between the turntable and the preamp, plus a new set from the preamp to the speaker, which I bought separately to ensure I had good quality cables with gold-plated contacts. The sound improvement is fantastic, with each of the three gain settings making a noticeable difference to the depth and quality of the output from the vinyl. I may look into different valves in future, to see how they further affect and/or improve the sound of the music, as suggested in some of the other product reviews on here, however my immediate feedback on this products is that it has been a great buy.
