5.0 out of 5 stars Ring Solar Floodlight - A Bright Spot in My Security Arsenal

    H.S. · January 2, 2024

As a parent, foster parent, and micro-farm owner, keeping a watchful eye is not just a necessity but a priority. The Ring Solar Floodlight, with its outdoor motion-sensor security light, has seamlessly integrated into my security setup, earning its place as one of my favorites.First and foremost, the solar-powered feature makes a huge difference, enabling me to put it remote on them on the back of the chicken coop, and goat house - keeping them safe from the coyotes of our nearby greenbelt. No need to worry about changing batteries or running power cables across the property. The eco-friendly design is not only practical but aligns with my commitment to sustainability on the micro-farm.The motion-sensor functionality is spot-on. The light activates precisely when needed, providing a sense of security without unnecessary interruptions. It's been a reliable deterrent for any unexpected visitors and reassurance for the safety of my family and foster children.Integration with my existing Ring devices and 360-degree cameras has been seamless. The ability to create a cohesive security network is invaluable. Being able to monitor and control everything from a single app simplifies the management of my diverse array of Ring devices. The 360-degree coverage is a standout feature. It ensures that no corner of my property is left in the dark. The floodlight's brightness is impressive and provides clear visibility, enhancing the effectiveness of my security system.Installation was surprisingly straightforward, even for someone like me who isn't a tech expert. The sleek black design blends well with the outdoor aesthetics, and the floodlight doesn't scream "security apparatus," maintaining a subtle presence. In conclusion, the Ring Solar Floodlight has become a reliable and practical addition to my security setup. As a parent and foster parent, knowing that my property is well-lit and secure brings me peace of mind. If you're looking for an outdoor motion-sensor security light that seamlessly integrates into your Ring ecosystem, this one is worth considering.

Package and instructions arrived earlier than expected, with easy set-up through the Ring app using the provided QR code. Install was simple enough as well - Ring provides the hardware and a small screw-driver, but I'd recommend a small powered drill/screw driver. Installation took about 15 minutes, including ladder set-up, mounting time, and app programming. The mounting panel can separate from the light, so I'd recommend giving the batteries a little bit of a charge while you install the light mounting plate and solar panel mount, then program the light in the app while you're on the ground. The light then snaps into the mounting plate, and the solar panel snaps into the solar panel mount as well. The solar panel plugs into the bottom of the light via a quite-lengthy cord.We mounted our lights on the East and West sides of our home, into vinyl siding, with the solar panels directly above the lights, facing south for maximum sun in the Northeastern part of the U.S. The screws provided are small enough to not pierce through the home, but threaded properly to grip the vinyl appropriately for mounting. Neither the solar panel nor the lights are very heavy, but secure enough that they hold up nicely with decent wind. The light mount uses three screws (one on the top, two on the bottom) within the square mounting bracket, and the solar panel uses two screws. The solar panel seemed to add about 50% charge during one sunny day, and has kept them from dipping below 80% even after multiple days in a row with clouds and rain. The addition of the solar panel alone is worth the cost of not having to drill more for hard-wiring, or climbing up and down a ladder to replace/recharge batteries. The solar panel still operates and charges the battery, albeit at a lesser rate, even when cloudy. The Ring app allows you to link the lights to other Ring cameras and devices. For instance, if motion is detected on a Ring camera, then the lights can turn on. Conversely, if a light detects motion, then it can prompt a Ring camera to start recording. For those who don't already have Ring products to link to, the lights and solar panel will work as standard motion lights. Light activation can be adjusted for multiple levels of brightness, sensitivity, and "activation time" for 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes after no longer sensing motion. There does seem to be a couple second delay before the lights turn on after sensing motion. The sensitivity and brightness can be customized (increased or decreased) as needed through the app, and motion alerts can be scheduled to turn off and on using a customizable schedule. The lights can be articulated vertically and horizontally; 90 degrees from center-laterally, and 90 degrees vertically. This means that if it's mounted on a corner, it can't point "behind" the corner.Overall, I'd absolutely recommend if you have a Ring system already, and even if you don't use Ring products it's a good solar option to minimize wiring and battery changes/charging. Like the other review said, if you're on the fence, go for it - it won't add to your electric bill.PROS:- Customizable brightness, schedules, and sensitivity.- Solar panel keeps battery charged throughout the day.- Lighting is adequate for small-medium sized yards.- Install is simple, with good instructions and video (if needed).- Integrates nicely into Ring App with Ring security system and Ring cameras.- Solar panel minimizes hardwiring and/or replacing/recharging batteriesCONS:- Ring Lighting Bridge is required (extra $49).- Lights do not articulate 180 degrees vertically and horizontally, reducing options for corners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Broke after first month

Disappointed. Purchased for my mother-in-law for Christmas. It was installed in January and worked up until a winter storm. We thought the batteries were dead… nope. We brought it in and tried to put in new batteries and it won’t turn on. Are these not weather resistant? We tried to reset and nothing.Of course we purchased it months before Christmas so it is out of the return window. Now I have to say, Ring is going to replace so I’ll update this if the new one works!*** June 2024 update. Well, things got worse and eventually ok. My MIL waited about 3 weeks for the new ring that was supposedly shipped. About a month after they advised us it was shipped, I called back in. I was told it was pending shipment. I escalated to a manager (non-Karen style). The manager was empathetic and promised a reorder would be shipped. A few days later, it arrived at my MIL’s house. We went down and installed it and it works beautifully. My MIL is so happy, she went and purchased another for her front porch.Lots of ridiculous work to get this for her, but she is happy and feels safe. Stars updated from 1 to 4.

I own three of these. The solar panels don’t charge well during winter or when overcast. However, they work great on sunny days. I am having to regularly charge and change batteries this winter. Plan on buying extra batteries. The sensor is active when it shouldn’t be, as I’ve set appropriate on/off times. Not sure why this is happening, but it’s frustrating that my batteries get wasted when I don’t need the lights.
