5.0 out of 5 stars The difference between Advil, Tylenol, and Aspirin
It's Advil, we all know it, it's effective for headaches and pain relief. But there is a difference in how all these over the counter (OTC) medications affect you.The 3 major brands out there are Aspirin, Tylenol, and Advil. All these provide pain relief, but in slightly different ways. Pain occurs when our nerves send an electrical signal to the brain. Your body will send these electrical signals when there is an imbalance in your body. Whether it be caused by injury or a reaction to something or diet, your body senses something is out of norm and reacts to it.The active ingredient in Advil is Ibuprofen, which is an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ibuprofen works by reducing hormones that cause pain and swelling in the body. When the swelling goes, the pain subsides. The active ingredient in Tylenol is Acetaminophen, essentially a pain blocker. By blocking the pain receptors, you feel no pain. Your body is continuously in repair mode once an imbalance is detected. In most cases, the swelling or inflammation would have subsided by the time before the Acetaminophen wears off. Acetaminophen is NOT an anti-inflammatory, it will not reduce swelling or inflammation. The active ingredient in Aspirin is Acetylsalicylic Acid (aka ASA) which blocks the production of the enzyme in cells that regulate pain and inflammation. ASA also prevents the platelets in your blood from clumping and clotting in your arteries, thus why there is a low-dose version for those with slightly elevated blood pressure. By thinning out the blood, it flows more freely and is less receptive to clotting and leading to heart attacks and strokes. Like Advil, Aspirin is also a NSAID.With all that said, these OTC drugs are designed for temporal pain only. If there is more intense injury, these drugs will only provide temporary relief, but will not cure nor heal. Always be cognizant of how much of these drugs you're putting into your body, and if you're ever in doubt, or if relief does not completely subside, you should consult a physician or seek immediate medical assistance. As with all drugs, your body will build up a tolerance to it if consumed too often, and efficacy rate will diminish. For this reason, the smallest effective does should always be used.Everyone will react to these drugs differently, so if you're looking for temporary relief, and one drug just doesn't to be working, try a different drug next time. For me, Ibuprofen works better than Acetaminophen when it comes to headaches, so Advil is my weapon of choice. There are also a lot of generic brands out there and while the active ingredients are the same, the "other ingredients" are most likely different. This includes but is not limited to things like the casing (gel cap) or other elements that bind the pill/tablet. These "other" ingredients may or may not have an impact on how each individual reacts to the medication. If you're set on one type of drug (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or ASA) but it doesn't seem to work well, you can also try a different (generic) brand of that same medication.Disclaimer: I'm not a physician nor a medical practitioner, nor do I work in the medical field. I just happened to be informed about these OTC medications because I asked the pharmacist about them before purchasing, and this is my understanding of them.
