My son wanted this to....point at things... It has thus far survived an 8 year old and no one has been impaled - it has a softish end. He complained that it had some rust on the inside (if you remove tip), but overall he's really enjoying it. It extends smoothly and has a quality appearance. Overall he's very happy. We have not tried to use it on a touch screen.

This is a very nice pointer, however make sure you evaluate how long you need the pointer to be before purchasing. This pointer is very long, and as a result the handle (and overall product when retracted) is large. I needed it to fit within a notebook and unfortunately it's too large to do so. However, if you're just needing a pointer that sits on a desk for occasional use, you'll probably find this useful. The handle and tip are both padded.
