5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious food that feels good in my body!
(My only complaint is that these are not sold directly by Bolo, so they are not SNAP/EBT eligible. That would be FANTASTIC!). I ordered several variety packs: soups, bars, and meals. I've tried the soup and the Apple-Pork meat and veggie bar. Meat + veggies/fruit=diabetic/hypoglycemic + Paleo HEAVEN. The bone-broth based soup tasted fabulous & I could swear I caught my stomach humming--deep feeling of vitality. Even the dehydrated ground beef and vegetables reconstituted satisfyingly (not, obviously, as good as fresh, but shelf-stable and even good for camping/backpacking!). And the bar was just the right balance of savory and sweet, and also felt "clean"/crisp and deeply nourishing in my body. Yes, a little pricey (portion sizes could be a tad larger?), but well worth the cost for nourishing, healthy, and very tasty goodness in light, sit-on-shelf-untill-needed tiny but nutrition-packed packages. I highly recommend the products from this company.
3.0 out of 5 stars Very Expensive
This is ONE tablespoon of product. I mean that. But when I say taste is there I mean it is there. However we did reduce the water also to achieve that taste. 6oz to be exact. 8-10oz is what is recommended but it is watered down at those amounts. This is the best tasting product by far. I mean that whole heartedly. But even the flavor doesn't justify the price. Add that to the fact you get the best flavor by reducing the amount of water added makes it worse. This product has the potential to be the best for backpacking, hiking, camping and what have you. It just needs to up the volume or cut the price. Saying all that though, if this is in your price range get it. You will enjoy this product
1.0 out of 5 stars Nope
I like to support small businesses, and really wanted to like these soups. I bought them to leave in my desk at work for unfortunate days when I forget my lunch or don't have anything fresh and healthy to pack. Very unfortunately, today was just such a day. I heated up Mushroom Beef with great anticipation of a tasty, warm, filling soup...it was neither tasty nor filling, but the filling part was mostly because I tossed it down the drain after 2 spoonfuls. It's inedible. The "chunks" never quite rehydrate (even after adding more water and letting it sit). The unidentifiable chewy bits are more than off-putting, and it lacks any real distinguishable flavor. I think I was drinking grass water and not Mushroom nor Beef. Improve the recipe, and I MAY try again. Until then, I'll see if an unsuspecting coworker will bite with a FREE sign.
4.0 out of 5 stars Better flavor than I expected...but keep in mind it's only 50 calories if you are backpacking...
Caveat: I got the multipack and thus far have only tried the beef/mushroom. If I was dieting, I'd definitely be using it as a tool - the flavor was very rich and full. I hear what people say about the texture: it's freeze-dried, so it takes a long time for the soup to fully rehydrate and the whole bits of dehydrated vegetables are going to be chewy. (I wonder what would happen if you put it in a thermos of hot woter in the morning and then had it for lunch? Might try that.) That didn't bother me, especially since the pieces were so small that they didn't really need much chewing: I tend to like chewy foods.I was a little concerned when I saw tumeric on the label, as that's often erroneously added as a health food (the scientific community has said the benefits of tumeric are overstated) but fortunately, it actually complements the flavor of the broth without making it taste like ballpark mustard.I question whether the cost is in line with the amount of ingredients offered...yes, they do make an 8oz cup of soup, but I wonder what the cost would be to assemble this myself from dehydrated foods. That said, it's a good recipe and is made the way I would make it...convenience isn't nothing. If you are backpacking, I'd consider these a flavor enhancer for some kind of higher-calorie food...because you aren't going to get far on 50 calories. I do like that there are actual measurable amounts of micronutrients though. The soup tasted much richer than you would think 50 calories would taste! I can definitely imagine this going well with something that has the calories, like freeze-dried beans or bean flakes.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great for backpacking
I just purchased this recently and tried it out immediately. I usually eat freeze dried meals or simple one pot meals when I backpack. While I'm waiting for the food to rehydrate or cook, it's nice to have an appetizer to take the edge off my appetite. I used to use Lipton Cup-a-soup but it's very salty and not all that good. The tomato is tasty but I would advise using just a little less water when making it. Other than that it's pretty good. I'll pick up another flavor soon to try. I would have gotten a variety pack but there are some things I just don't like so I'll order the 8 at a time.
