No need for smart outlets, lamps, power strips or anything. Any device that took a regular bulb will work with these bulbs. Step 1 download the app that is on the instructions my bulbs ran on the "Tuya App". Step two install smart bulbs in device. Step 3 turn on device and the bulb will illuminate, wait till bulb starts flashing on and off (this is it's pairing mode). Step 4 open Tuya app and after registering and verifying your account go to automatic device adding, (make sure your connected to (2.4G Wifi and not 5G wifi) if your wifi is dual band and shows seperate connections speeds you need to connect to the 2.4G only to complete setup It has to be on the same 2.4G wifi to sync and register. Follow the prompts on screen until the light stays illuminated and finally gives you the all good button. Now your bulb is fully controllable through the app. Now you can rename whatever generic name was assigned by the app by selecting the individual bulb and on the screen where you can change color tone and brightness, keep clicking on the icons in top right of screen that look like editing symbols (pencils at an angle). Change device name to whatever you want your smart device to recognize it as. Fan, lamp, kitchen, fan 1, lamp 2 ect. Mine worked immediately but if not fully functional, power cycle your phone, PC and smart device and turn back on and wait a few minutes. Now to get your smart device (Alexa) to control the light through your voice you have to make sure to enable the skill for the device manufacturer for your smart device (Alexa, google, whatever). Go to skill search and search "Tuya Smart skill" and enable it. Once skill is enabled click add devices and it will show the bulbs you have added and renamed. You can add them and assign them to groups Alexa will turn on and off the light, change the color of the light and also adjust the brightness to whatever you tell her too I think these bulbs max are 9 Watts so at 100% brightness they will save money! I outfitted my entire apartment with these bulbs and my electric bill dropped from $150 a month down to $75. I love the fact I can tell Alexa to drop a bulb down to 1% brightness by just saying "Alexa turn entry to 1%" Boom that fully lit light drops down to just a faint glow great for watching movies as to not interrupt the lights on the TV but enough faint light the kids can get up for snacks and not trip over another kid LOL. You can group multiple bulbs together so they turn on in unison like Living room, kitchen, bedroom. Best part I think is the fully controllable tones between cool and warm tones. You can fine tune the lights tone or color in the Tuya app and alexa will keep that setting when you instruct her to turn that light on. But when the kids stay up a little later than they should and I wake up to turn on lights and all the lights are Blue or red or purple I can just say "Alexa turn Lamp Warm White or cool White" Boom that bulb changes from Blue to the regular normal tone we grew up with. I Love these things! There is a downside that I have lived with and that is when there are power outages and when someone turns the physical switch off to a light or lamp for an extended period of time that certain bulbs lose connectivity. And you have to reconnect them so once they are installed you have to teach yourself to not flip the switch. Its definitely a process that takes some time to unlearn cause that's what we have always done. When I'm ready for bed I just say "Alexa Goodnight" and any and all bulbs left on turn out. This review I left about a year ago and I'm updating it now. I got a message from Bolo that 100 people found my review for these bulbs helpful. All the Tuya bulbs I've bought still work, they have payed for themselves time and time again in just that short time. And I'm never going back to regular bulbs, LED bulbs are cool cause they save money but Smart LED bulbs are amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, though not perfect

These bulbs work great, with a couple of minor annoyances.Setup: These bulbs are the easiest smart bulbs I've ever set up. The app does a phenomenal job of quickly detecting them. HOWEVER, they have a very annoying behavior of flashing rapidly (~2hz) when you first turn them on and they're waiting to be paired. It's a bit annoying during the day, but it's blinding if you're trying to set these up at night. But once set up, you never need to worry about this again.Color: The bulbs seem to have a similar color range to other smart bulbs I've tried. HOWEVER, there's a weird issue where when I use my google speaker to make the lights warm white, they barely change. Looking in the Tuya app, I can see they've only been set a bit off center, and can be made significantly warmer. I resolved this issue by setting up scenes so instead of saying "Hey Google, make the lights warm white" I have to say "Hey Google, activate [scene name]"Other: The bulbs handle being turned off by a wall switch very well. You can configure in the app what happens when power is restored (though the feature is a bit buried and difficult to find), but the default is to go back to however they were set previously. More importantly, they reconnect to the wifi very quickly when powered back on. I'd guess maybe within 5 seconds of power on they should be fully controllable via wifi. This makes them excellent if you want to still use a standard light switch to control the on/off state.I'm very happily surprised by these bulbs. Like I said, they're not perfect, but they're at least as good as any other smart bulb I've used and the issues I have are minor and easily mitigated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great - with some flaws

I DIY a lot of my home automations (arduino), but when I saw the 12-pack of these bulbs on sale, it made sense to save myself some time and effort, especially since I could now use these in our non-smart house fixtures! My review is based on wide-spread use in a home with growing smart automations. If you're wanting just a couple lights to have fun with, these will work great using just Tuya or paired with voice control! The apps: I was already using Tuya paired with Alexa before getting these lights. I've had no issues with my other devices, nor have I had issues with these lights. Pairing is super quick and easy, but connect your phone's wifi to your 2.4 wifi first. I suggest pairing one at a time so you can name them based on the location as you go.Tuya has a great interface for controlling the lights, and I loved that I was able to create a separate Tuya account for each of my kids, then share only the light that was in their room with them. Now they can open their own app and have control of only their bedroom bulb, while I also have control of it in my account - the one linked to Alexa. I was relieved to see this as I have no intention of giving them access to the accounts that manage the household automations! Also, black light posters became the order of business for Christmas after setting these up!It is true that the pairing will be lost if the power to the bulb is turned off for too long (as in flipping the switch and cutting power, not telling Alexa to turn the light off). Re-pairing them is inconvenient - but the bulb is remembered (the old device name is remembered in Tuya and Alexa, so it's not a brand new setup). I added a wall light switch block to prevent turning them off, plus I added sensors for non-voice control and automation (motion sensor or wifi button sensor as a new on/off switch).I also have the lights paired with my Home Assistant setup. The way Tuya is working with HA for pairing is awesome! Note: I tested disabling the Tuya-Alexa connection, isolating all Alexa connections through HA, but that didn't go over well. The Tuya-Alexa communication was quicker and didn't require time to update the status each time I opened the Alexa app. That being said, I have all my scripts/scenes outlined in HA - I can tell Alexa to run an HA scene, which will control any Tuya bulbs included in it. In HA, I have my Tuya devices not being shared over the cloud with Alexa - if you don't do this, the devices will show up in Alexa twice. Tuya's response to an HA dashboard button is fast. The bulb:This is on the bulbs, not Alexa or Tuya - the user interface they support in Alexa is limited to the various shades of white (not including the warmest) and a handful of colors. You can look up Alexa's recognized color list and tell it to change the light to any of those colors, though - but if you want to create a routine with a color missing in the light's list, you instead need to give Alexa a custom action in your routine ("set light to x color"). In Tuya, each lightbulb has custom scenes you can setup - great for saving favorite colors - but those are not shared with Alexa. Tuya also has general scenes you can setup affecting multiple devices, which are shared with Alexa, but this bulb has a bug in it's setup that prevents setting a color. Home Assistant ended up being the missing link to get the very precise, detailed control I wanted. In both Alexa and HA automations/routines, I found it's best to set the color, then the percent separately. I got inconsistent results when the commands were lumped. (set light to color, wait, set light to brightness; otherwise one or the other may get skipped). These lights are super bright! I generally have no need to run them over 70-80% brightness, even as the only bulb in a room. Unfortunately, dimming to 1% is also too bright, especially as a nightlight. I've found a deeper shade of orange/red set to 1% helps, but turning it on in the middle of the night is still a bit too much. Given the price and convenience of these, I don't want to return or try another brand. I plan to add shades to the ones I want to be night-light friendly, hoping diffusing and blocking some of the light can get the range I desire.
