5.0 out of 5 stars The Saga of The Cat, The Mouse, and the Shelving Unit...
It's a tale as old as time....The Cat, Oliver, is a rather tubby cat but for all his blubber, he's one heck of a mouser.Of course, he mouses at his best at 3 AM.Of course the rodent in question has decided to be in the vicinity of my washer, either in the wall, or under the floor or some such other nonsense. Now, normally it's not an issue. He mouses and life goes on, even for the mouse. Unless he's in a decapitating mood.Well, in this particular case, the area the hunt was occurring was between my washer and dryer.Okay, you say, no biggie.Well, not ok. Big biggie!See, because my house is old, like 175 years old, storage is an issue. Like we have none. So I have to improvise and in this case, in the area between laundry machines, I had placed those cute wooden crates that are stackable and so 5 years ago. This created a hole like area behind the crates. Perfect for fat chubby cats to stalk what I'm assuming are sleek mouses. Now, because of the crates, Oliver, bless his heart, couldn't climb out of the hole like void crated by the crates and implements if laundry once he jumped into it.So after Oliver's attempting to extricate himself, unsuccessfully, and me having to rescue his fat self at 3 AM on a nighly basis, I finally came to the conclusion that I needed to figure out a different, better solution to the cat and mouse shenanigans going on. I needed a Shelving Solution. One that could hold laundry paraphernalia and one that Fatty....oops...Oliver could either go under or climb over on his quest to slay the mouse. So turning to Bolo because they've never let me down, I started to look for units and got caught up in fancy units with wheels, ones with basket like shelves, ones that were....all to big, once I realized that I needed to measure the area I wanted to put the shelving unit in.So I measured, refined my search and voila! I found this unit. In white no less to natch my kitchen/laundry area. And according to the item information helpfully listed buy the seller, it would fit!I was in!I promptly ordered it and it came lickety split. It was very well packaged so it arrived in perfect condition. It included, all the parts and an instruction sheet. I was thrilled.Oliver was thrilled. The jury is still out on if the mouse is thrilled....This is an awesome shelving unit! I got it in white as stated before and it looks really nice. I added some non skid shelf liners I bought from Walmart on a whim. For those wondering what the floral prints are, they are Pioneer Woman brand. I thought they'd look nice and keep things from getting stuck or falling through the wire shelvesNow, for the pros mixed with the cons: the unit is well made and sturdy. The feet are adjustable as are the shelves although I recommend that you plan out your desired configuration as you go and before you put it all together because you have to take it apart to adjust the shelves. Well, you could also take it apart in sections to adjust it. That's kinda a con. It has tons of options for adjustment but it's not convenient to do. It's easy once you take it apart though.Another thing that was interesting was the plastic bracket? thingies that you clip onto the shelving poles to affix the actual shelves to the unit. Unless you click then into place, they tend to fly off the poles when you try to run the shelves onto them.On the con side, the instructions have letters listing the parts/pieces but no letter stickers on the corresponding packaging for the parts. While it wasn't difficult to figure out, I had to carefully look at the instruction diagrams to figure out which rod/pole was which. Thank God for glasses!!Just as a mention, not a deduction, the unit was packaged very well so they place little round plastic spacers/caps to help in transit. That's fantastic, but since you throw them away, I'd like to see those made from a heavy cardboard that way, less plastic is used and the cardboard can decompose.Overall, I'd give this shelving unit a 4.75 stars. Oliver gives this shelving unit 5 stars because now he can mouse seriously. Although he would like me to point out that without the wooden crates, he's lost his feeding station so I get 0 stars for selecting this unit. The Mouse gives this shelving unit a 5 in esthetics but a big fat 0 in everything else because now he has a fat cat to contend with.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fast easy setup
Unit was smaller than I’d hoped, but sturdy and attractive. Easy to set up space saver.
5.0 out of 5 stars Relatively stable on carpet and not heavy
The design leaves a slight wiggle to the higher shelves, so it is fortunate it isn't taller than it is. Heavier items on lower shelves stabilizes this. Lightweight as far as wire/metal shelving goes, the support poles at each corner are about a third of the diameter of a standard wire shelf (as pictured; this shelf is the one at left). I like that the shelves are inverted, thus each shelf has a holding lip/edge to make sure your knickknacks won't roll off (on standard wire shelves this lip hangs below the shelf as decorative embellishment).I invested in some black shelf liners through Bolo (as pictured), as well, to make it easier to stand things up on them without fear of falling through the wires (I do this with my other wire shelves). Couldn't find any close to the dimensions of this smaller shelving unit, so I bought longer ones and cut them down to size. Works like a charm! All in all, pleased with all aspects of these shelves and liners.
5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to put together
This was a great replacement for a set of shelves that had finally seen better days. Reasonable price, good size, and easy to put together.
3.0 out of 5 stars Probably not the best choice if you live in an earthquake zone
This shelf system has the look of the very sturdy and strong ones you see holding the merchandise in some stores; but there the similarity ends. It's made from lighter metals and hasn't the same sort of strength and rigidity. After seeing the photos of this more than four foot tall item, I was surprised when it showed up in a shipping carton maybe 18 or 20 inches long. Those long tubular corner posts are not all in one piece; each one is in four separate pieces about 13 or 14 inches long that must be joined together to make up the full height. Three joints to make up each upright pole. The joints are just loose fitting enough so that each one has a little wiggle room. That wiggle adds up: three wiggle places, one after the other, along the length of the pole. Partly owing to that, and, I suppose, some flexibility of the thin aluminum pipe walls, the completed tower is anything but rigid. It wiggles in response to light touch. It wiggles and deflects from side to side and from front to back; it twists and flexes.Things get a little better when you load some weight into it. That steadies it a bit. Nothing remarkable, but it makes a difference. Don't get any ideas about picking it up to reposition it after assembling. Remember those slip joints that slip together to make up the full height? They don't just slip together; they just as easily slip back apart. So don't bother trying to lift it from the top when you want to see how it looks against that other wall. You will get a handful of the top shelf only (or the top two shelves, if you try to lift it by the one just below the top shelf). Of course, you could lift and carry it from the very bottom, but that might be a bit of a balancing challenge. Best to assemble it where you want it.So am I returning it? No, I'm keeping it. With all its faults, it's a pretty decent little set of shelves, not quite like any other. I wouldn't store any 10 or 15 pound exercise weights in it--it's too flimsy for that. But for copy paper or boxes of those Keurig coffee things or tea, etc. it's OK, and I don't see anything else around to take its place.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great shelving system
I really like this shelving system. Super easy to set up, no tools needed. Love the adjustable feet. I was hoping I could flip the shelves upside down so I would not have to deal with the low lip, but could not. Regardless, very sturdy and nice quality materials. Highly recommend.
