5.0 out of 5 stars This replaced my clock-radio
I wanted something that isn't a smart phone for my alarm clock, that is small/portable, and that plays MP3s for the hour I'm getting ready in the morning. Bluetooth support a big plus. This little device has fit that need perfectly:I keep a pair of wired computer speakers in our bedroom. At night they plug into this device (which is also plugged in so it's fully charged the next day). In the morning, after I turn off the alarm I typically select some music to help wake and start the day. When I'm ready to move from bedroom to anywhere-else, I switch on my battery-powered portable stereo wireless bluetooth speakers. ($15 at Ace Hardware with sound more like $40 speakers.) The music automatically switches to these and I move those with me as I start my day. Here is why this device's specific features work well for me as a replacement clock-radio:* It's an Android (based on 1.x or something really old but I don't care) but without the Play Store. Since I deliberately wanted something limited this was a feature, not a bug and I immediately knew how to use it.* It has the stock Android clock application with its nice flexible alarm clock application.* The MP3 player is quirky but once I got used to it I found I like it a lot. It's not any of the stock Android MP3 player applications but a third-party app. As other reviewers have noted, it works well for collections organized by folder. Note that you'll have to go hunting for a setting that turns this feature on. It's apparently licensed demoware but the vendor didn't turn the nagware banner off. That's annoying. And because (again) the Play Store isn't available, there's no way to even pay to turn it off. I hope they fix that in a future version of this product.* The FM radio works well. I don't use it a lot but it's a really nice bonus to have it and I've gotten good reception out of it. (You have to have speakers or headphones plugged in to use it.)* The sound quality is very good for the price, both over Bluetooth and via the headphone output.* The built-in speaker is usable as an alarm clock, countdown timer, or for listening to lectures. Its quality is painful for listening to music.* I've never fully discharged the battery, even with playing constantly over Bluetooth for somewhere between three and four hours. I'm really happy with the battery life for my purposes. Some overall thoughts:* I like that this setup is completely modular. If a speaker system fails I can replace it independently to everything else, etc.* I don't use the web browser or video feature at all. It's really not designed for that use. But the settings allow you to hide applications you don't want to access from the home screen and I use this to remove icons for these applications. I really like this feature.* At around $50, I didn't expect high-end phone build quality so I wasn't disappointed that the device is plastic. But it has held up fine for my use. And plastic doesn't crack like phone screens can. It does need a wipe from time to time with one of my leftover lens cloths (from an old pair of glasses) to remove fingerprints.* The clock application doesn't have any setting to keep the display on when the device is plugged in. This would be nice, but it's hardly a deal-breaker. The clock and alarm are still reliable and that's what counts.Overall, except for the nagware banner I can't remove I couldn't be more delighted.
1.0 out of 5 stars Cannot Recommend
My expectations were fairly low when I ordered one of these Timmkoo MP3 players. I didn't expect it to perform like much more expensive Sony, FiiO, or Astell & Kern units. After all, my needs are quite modest: I just want to listen to MP3 music files through my Sony Bluetooth headset without using my phone. Period. Unfortunately, this player proved unequal to the task. The first one I received was difficult to charge to more than about 1/4 capacity. After playing with various USB-C cords and USB ports on my computer, I managed to get it fully charged once, but it lost that charge in less than an hour with the unit off. I returned that one to Bolo for a replacement. The replacement charged easily enough, but had difficulty accessing my 128GB Micro SD card. As other reviewers mentioned, you need a strong fingernail or paperclip to insert a Micro SD card fully. But, even when fully inserted, sometimes it recognized the card, sometimes it didn't. I would have tried formatting the card in the unit, but the very basic instructions don't cover that and I couldn't figure it out. When it did see the card, it took several minutes each time to pair with my Sony Bluetooth headphones. Then it took several minutes to build the database each time. The best I ever did was just over 4 minutes from turning on the device to listening to music. Several times it took more than 8 minutes, and sometimes I just gave up. Then, I tested the Bluetooth range and found that my headset lost the signal less than 15 feet from the player. Then, the only way to resume listening to music was to turn off the player and start the 4 - 8 minute process over. As if that wasn't enough, several times it just froze in the middle of a song for no apparent reason and, again, the only way to resume listening was to shut it off and start over. When it was working, I found the sound reasonably good, but it was just too much work to simply listen to music, so I returned the second unit. Other reviewers have reported both good and bad experiences, so I assume there are quality control issues at the Chinese factory, which is probably true for other MP3 players in this price range. For now, I ordered a Sony NW-A105 unit that was returned to the Bolo Warehouse. Even with the Bolo Warehouse discount, it's significantly more expensive than the Timmkoo, but I'm hopeful it will work.
Phenomenal MP3 player
The more I use this MP3 player, the more I love it. I'm reviewing the Timmkoo Q5.Pros:- Awesome audio quality and bass depth. It has an equalizer as well as other audio plugins to enhance the sound. I've purchased, tried and returned a few other cheap brands because their sound quality was bad. This device is however, for its price, generates amazing sound. The included earbuds are not bad, but the sound is even better with Apple earbuds (those that are bundled with iPhones) or any other quality headphones.- The built-in memory is only 8GB, which is plenty to run the OS and apps, and to store the cache, so a microSD card is highly recommended to put the music/video files on it. I bought a 128GB and it works just fine.- The Q5 is based on Android, has a few apps, FM radio and Google Chrome browser. Note that the other Q3E model is virtually the same, but doesn't have WiFi, FM radio or browser. For $5 more, get this Q5.- It can handle many file formats, including .m3u8 playlists and .cue files; those are not listed in the Bolo description, but the music app supports them, which is a bonus.- The size is adequate, not too big, not too small, fits in the hand, it has a decent solid weight and doesn't feel cheap.- Playing videos is excellent, with the option to play video horizontally (by default) or flip vertically.- When plugging into the PC, there are several USB modes that can be selected (e.g. MTP, USB storage, and a few others).- Although the screen is medium sized, it's crystal clear and sharp.- Once the music is playing, I can manually turn off/lock the screen by pressing the power button. In this state, the volume can still be changed without waking up the screen. To turn back on, press the power button again.Cons:- Inserting the microSD card was a bit tricky, I had to press it firmly with my finger nail to make it "click" into position, otherwise it was bouncing back and forth when using my finger. So use your nail.- The screen gets greasy pretty fast, I got my fingerprints all over it, so gently wipe it with a cotton cloth when not in use to keep it clean.- Sometimes tapping the buttons doesn't register immediately, I have to press a few times to make things happen; this is the case when playing music while doing other stuff. Perhaps the processor is struggling or the screen was too dirty with fingerprints?- Web browsing isn't snappy, but that's not a big issue for me, I bought this device to play music, not browse. But it's good to have the WiFi option, it allows uploading files through a web browser from another PC on the same network. It's not really necessary to do so, as I copy the files directly through the USB connection.Overall, the Q5 packs a ton of features and highly customizable options, has great sound quality and is easy to use. For $70, it's worth every penny for what it offers. I recommend this product.
