5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, connects to public WiFi and presents your own VPN-secured private WiFi.

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Works great. My Netgear mesh system at home is able to present an OpenVPN that I can connect to with this GL inet device. So I can connect it to public wifi anywhere -- coffee shop, hotel, whatever -- and it presents my own private wifi network locally. I can then connect to that with my computer, phone, tablet and it looks like I'm at home. I can access my internal network at home, printer, everything, and when I am online, my IP address is the same as my home connection. Also works very well with ProtonVPN.Pretty amazing little gadget!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portable router, may need some geekiness for certain applications

    T.A. · December 25, 2024

The big selling point for me is OpenWRT that is the underlying operating system. I have dabbled in IT (networking included) for years, and I know how capable and flexible OpenWRT has been. While the GL.inet web interface is more intuitive and easy to use, it does not provide all the options that are necessary in certain enterprise Wifi situations. Using LuCI (the web interface to OpenWRT), I was able to specify the necessary configuration. That took a little bit of research and experimentation.OpenWRT and LuCI are open source projects and are widely used. There is plenty of information and instructions online. That being said, some background in IT and networking may be needed to dig through some of the material. The little router does run barely warm in an ambient temperature of about 68F. That is to be expected because the RF components consume a bit of power. The circuit board has a large heatsink and a quiet fan for active cooling. As long as the router is not being run inside a closed environment, thermal management should not be a problem.Like most portable routers, power is supplied via a USB C connection. This is a great feature because one can potentially run the router using a USB power pack for truely wireless networking in a mobile application. If you are not familiar with OpenWRT, but otherwise have a background in networking or IT, read about OpenWRT and understand the capabilities and flexibility. I was willing to drop down to command line interface configuration, but LuCI was sufficient to specify the configuration. Otherwise, knowing Linux and how to use the command line interface will be quite handy.Look at it this way, this router is essentially a Linux computer pretending to be a cute portable router with a fantastic software package installed. The GL.inet user interface is sufficient for most non-enterpeise wifi setups, LuCI handles probably most of the rest of the configuration situations. If necessary, drop down to the Linux command line interface for the finest level of customization.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good. International Travel pending

I read some of the reviews and comments AFTER buying so I was a little worried. I will respond to some of them here.Overall the device is working as promised and for the weight is quite handy!1. Power Supply: The supplied power is just a normal USB-C power supply. I've successfully run this device with my laptop power supply and by plugging it into my simple power bank. As I write this it has been plugged up to my power bank from about 8 AM to 11 AM and it's only lowered it by 4 or 5% (20k mah powerbank.) When using advanced featured like the USB port and anything else that might cause it to draw more power, you may run into the limit of the device you plug it into.Check your junk drawers! The shipped power supply only comes with one set of plug for your country, however, I happened to have (from some other device I got, apparently) several other country adaptors that snap right into the thing. However based on the above paragraph, I likely wont be traveling with the supplied Power Supply2. VPN: So far I've only used NordVPN thru OpenVPN with a minor dip in speed (maybe 10mbps.) I'm not a VPN genius but nord reports its working as intended and my IP address reports correctly. I've only tested this domestically, will report back after my international trip. The phone app is a little confusing about VPN set up and this is echoed online with others with similar questions. Something about the configuration stored on phone vs device. I'm a techy person so I figured it out, but I don't think it was actually a big deal.3. Reliability: I saw some say it was unstable or didn't maintain connection. On this current domestic trip I plugged it in to the wall the second I got there and left it on. Now going on three days straight it is still performing with no change. I unplugged it and came downstairs to work in the hotel lobby (attached to my power bank) and it reconnected immediately without me having to use the app. Realistically I likely wouldn't leave this thing plugged in when I am not in the room or space where it is using it.There was a little bug when I initially tried to connect it to the hotel wifi but I think that was because I was moving too fast or my phone was trying to change connections to working wifi. It seems once you hit connect and order the device to work...it will. While I was piddling with my phone trying to reconnect to the device it had already connected itself to the hotel's wifi.I'll be traveling internationally with this next week and with two people's worth of devices so I will update!Other notes:It does generate a little heat if you plan to use this clandestinely. Think what you might feel through a coffee cup with a heat sleeve on it if it was poured 20 minutes ago. There doesn't seem to be any fan. Software has a lot of neat little features and the wizards to help you connect are actually decent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for travelers

I really like this device!Pros:The firmware is really good and is built on ddwrt. So this will most likely keep support even if this goes out of business. There are still updates and it's really easy to do.Cons:The only thing which I don't understand is that it came with only an american head/plug for the power adapter. Meaning I will have to buy a European adapter if I want to travel to there.Other thoughts:You can connect to the WiFi network and have forward(repeater) to another WiFi network and VPN at the same time making a WiFi only private network. It works with openvpn and wireguard. I am not sure why, but I had faster speeds on openvpn .It seems to get a little hot, but it's very manageable.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Thing

Perfect addition to my mobile Flypack kit. The web GUI is easy to use and understand, it works reliably, and is compact enough to travel well but sturdy enough that I feel confident in its ability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every. Feature. Works!

I cannot sing the praises about this little router enough. The VPN profile was simple to set up. Tethering from a phone was straight forward. It has so many features built into it that are extremely easy to use/set up. Love this little thing!

    Excellent router

Been running 24-hours for 11 months. As with all Gl-inet products, the RouterOS running on them is very easily configured. I have purchased numerous products from Gl-inet and have been pleased with all of them. Given the augmented speed of the GL-AXT1800 over former products I bought from them, and if price drops, I will probably purchase another one for the road. Highly recommended.

Tiene mucho poder para su tamaño

Es un aparato con un peso y medidas muy cómodo, con una potencia de señal aun con obstáculos muy buena, lo único es que parece de un plástico muy débil, pero abría qué seguirlo probando

    Briliant Small Router

    P.C. · January 4, 2025

I bought this in October 2024. So far I have not taken it travelling but I have used it as a wifi extender within my own house and it works perfectly. I already have three Unifi access points, two of which are connected to my router via ethernet cables, but one is meshed. The GL-AXT1800 is connected via wifi to the meshed Unifi access point, so there is some double meshing going on. As far as I can tell there is no drop in performance. I have also currently got it sitting on a couple of thick books on a window sill facing into the garden where I have a Ring Stick Up Cam. It's an excellent little device, and great fun to play with.
