2.0 out of 5 stars Not all it says
Its still jerky in its movememts, not very fluid
5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome tripod!
I bought this for a small 70mmx400mm travel telescope. It's rock solid with no visible shake. The fluid head lets you track targets without loosing them. It goes high enough that you can stand up to see higher targets. I loved it so much I bought another for my camera. You won't get better for the money.
3.0 out of 5 stars I would have preferred this Lightweight tripod without the video head which has usability issues
The tripod is lightweight aluminum and does feel light and hollow.I like the idea of having a short light travel tripod for occasional use.The addition of the fluid head makes the tripod more bulky when folded because the legs can not fully close. A simple ball head would not have this issue. The maximum weight specifications are printed on the tripod leg although the maximum weight is shown as 6.6 lbs not 33.06 lbs.It is possible that they chose to print the weight limit for the combined fluid head only , rather than a weight for the tripod and another for the head. I think that’s odd because the D5 tripod can also be used with a ball head or other attachment and the tripod has a hook to hang weights for stability too (which depend on the tripods strength not the fluid heads).Update : I reached out to ProGearX as the information in the manual seemed at odds with the advertised maximum weight claims for the tripod and they were good enough to confirm that the tripod Maximum load was 5-15kg or 11.02 to 33.06 lbs. I think this means that if you extend the legs the maximum safe load the tripod can take is as low as 11lbs, much lower than the 33lbs in the description.I am not sure if all tripod manufactures are all equally 'over-optimistic' about the maximum safe load in real life use (eg extended) and ProGearX are one of the few admitting that really the tripod can't not handle the figure claimed. Either way be aware and don't overload this tripod.I would recommend hanging a bag or other weights on the tripod support hook for stability with a mirrorless camera. The fluid head comes with an Arca Swiss compatible quick release plate. There is also a neat leveling bubble under the quick release plate. The QR plate is only gripped by a very short piece of metal, not the full length of the QR plate edge.If you already have an Arca Swiss plate, bracket or cage on your camera that runs parallel to the length of the camera you may run in to the same issue I had:The orientation of the fluid head means it does not tip the camera up and down only side to side (see saw), this is clearly not useful so the fluid head did not work for me with my existing Arca Swiss brackets. If you are only using the supplied QR plate , or can choose the orientation of your Arca Swiss plates , this may work for you.The grip/contact area is very short so suitable for lightweight camera and lens combinations. The fluid head did not work well for me with my existing Arca Swiss hardware, and made the tripod bulkier than it needed to be and I do not feel the combination is good value at $90.The tripod itself could be OK as a lightweight travel option is available on its own or with just a ballhead. Be aware that the tripod itself does not necessarily support the 33lb claimed and the manual says the maximum weight for the tripod can be as low as 11lbs.3/5This may work for you if you use the supplied QR plate with small cameras only.Lots of other options at this $90 price pointI hope you find this useful
4.0 out of 5 stars The stock head is not so great so I swapped in the ProGear x fluid tripod head
As stated, I got both items at the same time, and I swapped out the stock head for the fluid tripod head. I need to fit this setup onto a smaller bag, so I appreciate its compact form factor. I feel that the original tripod head is a little generic, so acquiring the same brand's fluid head (with the collapsible handle) was the better decision. I can now effortlessly disassemble and reassemble the new combo to fit for transport and carry without any problems; with or without the head installed. I'm obliged to point out that the tripod adds a ballast-hook under the center column, so the user can hang some extra weight for stability. I just use a saddle-style ballast bag with a 2.5 lb weight, and that is just fine for most of my needs when outdoors. Go for it, you can't go wrong with this design if you're looking for your first tripod.
5.0 out of 5 stars Folds into a very compact, portable tripod.
I was surprised at the size of the box being on the small side, but then when I saw how it expanded with the extendable legs, and extended main support rod, I knew this was an ideal design for portability, and usage. The light weight and size make it a preferred unit, including the carry pouch to put on the side of your camera bag/back pack to take along on any adventure. Of course, with the light weight there is a trade-off in using the fluid head aspect of this unit. It's not a heavy-duty fluid head that comes with this, but an effective one if you have the right touch. A heavier duty unit like the ProGear Video Tripod Fluid Head, Metal Panorama Head with Scaled Base, Vertical Function, Quick Release Plate, Handle, Fluid Video Head for DSLR Cameras, Camcorder, Spotting Scope, Monopod and Tripod (tripod not included) provides that deeper measure of resistance ensuring a more precise fluid head movement, even though you may attack it more abruptly. The two advantages of using this tripod with the lighter duty fluid head is that it comes with a removable plate which gives you quick access to switching cameras on the fly. It is not a single push button change, but rather requires you to unscrew the adjusting thumb screw, and retighten again. (That only takes a few seconds). The quick changing plate that comes with the tripod is a shorter version designed for lighter weight gear like an action camera, or smaller mirrorless etc. The plate that comes with the ProGear X dedicated fluid head is longer allowing you to slide it back and forth to attain the ideal balance of your camera and lens. What's pretty slick is the included allen wrench embedded in the liquid filled heads both on the pro and the one included in this kit, makes it easy to access major changes in usage, and has a little magnet that keeps it tucked in, yet easily will let it loose when you need it.The flexibility of this stand in the standard version is very functional because when the legs are extended, you have a lot of height which affords you additional stability because the width of how wide the legs are set has 3 increments which gives you the flexibility, but also locks into one of those three so you don't ever have the risk of one leg not being fully tightened, it does it for you, if you even make it snug. My overall comment is that at 3 pounds this is better suited for very small, lighter cameras, or an action camera. I wouldn't put my Canon R7 on it. The big plus is that as a small portable stand that compacts down making it easy to transport and store makes it ideal as a second come along tripod.
