3.0 out of 5 stars Why are these legal in California, and the brand refills aren't?
The first time I bought these, it was because they were so much less expensive than the Janibell brand. However, I soon decided that next time around, I'd spend the extra for Janibell. Why? It is not obvious which end goes which way on these, and we messed up an entire pack trying to put it in. With one pack totally useless, I lost all my savings and then some. There is a reason why Jaanibell has that printed wrapper and tells you to leave it in place until you have positioned the pack in the device. And, this stuff is thick, while Janibell is thin. The thinness is important as I found out when you try to cut off the used portion and tie the knot. It's a struggle! And then you have to tie it at the bottom again, another struggle. And although it is thinner, I never had the brand name liners rip or leak. They were just much easier to cut off in the little razor and tie at both the bottom and the top.But after I determined to buy only the brand name liners, I got that dreaded "California" message that the product could not be shipped to my address. I figured these would have the same message, and wondered how I could continue to use my beloved Janibells without them. Surprise! No message on these. These are legal whereas Janibell refills are not. So, when I got my next batch, I carefully printed a big "this side up"and arrow on the paper bands around each refill so I could put them in without any errors. It took me a while to examine them, see how they worked when properly loaded, and carefully mark each package. If you live in a state that is not as careful about products as California (and don't get me wrong -- I'm happy to live in a state that cares about such things -- I suggest you spend the extra money and buy the brand name refills. OK, so I'm happy to have these since they make it possible to still use this absolutely clever device that keeps the smell of dirty adult desposibles out of the bathroom I have to share with my husband and friend. But the difficulties of putting them in correctly, and of cutting off each portion and tieing it up are a nuisance. I suppose this material may be less expensive. There has to be a reason why they cost less other than brand name.
