As a beginner in the world of wood chopping, I was on the lookout for an axe that wouldn’t be too intimidating or difficult to use. I found exactly what I needed in this splitting axe. 5.0 out of 5 stars There is a Reason This Ax Gets Such Great Reviews
After many purchases on Bolo, I think this may be my first review. I am extremely happy with this splitting ax.Here are my reasons for buying it:I do not own a wood stove, but I have had a number of large trees fall in the yard over the years. I typically just cut them with the chainsaw to a reasonable size and put them in the woods. However, I do have a fire pit and thought it would be great to start splitting some of these pieces into a size that would burn easier and would be more manageable. I could not justify a power splitter because, as I mentioned, I do not heat using a wood stove, and I thought using this ax would be good exercise. The number of positive reviews on Bolo and YouTube convinced me to buy this particular splitting ax. Those reviews were correct. This was a great purchase that was well worth the money.Here are why I think it is great:Simply put, it cuts better and with less force than any maul or splitting ax that I have used. Nearly every cut is a full split on the first swing. In many cases, you do not have to use a full swing to split the logs, and those instances where I did not have a full split was because I only lightly swung the ax. Essentially, you can look at the blade design and see it is well designed to cut and wedge the wood. While not paper light, it is much lighter than a maul meaning one can work longer with it too. I used this ax primarily on Oak and Poplar. I also used it on green and old wood. The green obviously took a fuller swing, but not by much. If you do find that you need to make a full swing, the handle is very long and the head is lighter than a maul; so, you can generate a lot of acceleration resulting in tremendous force.I also tested it in near freezing weather because I was concerned that the composite handle may have issues in the cold (much like one is not supposed to use a composite baseball bat in cold weather.) It had no issues at all. As a matter of fact, on my first swing, I took a hard swing and missed terribly. I hit the handle directly on the log. It only scuffed it slightly. There is also no real vibration in the handle like you get in a wood handle ax. The shape and texture at the end of the handle makes for an easy firm grip too, even with gloves on. In addition, I have seen in other reviews that Fiskars is great about honoring the warranty if something happens to the handle. In theory, this should be the last splitting ax that I ever have to buy.As with any splitting ax/maul, I do recommend putting your wood on a stump for those instances where you cut clear through the log. The blade is sharp and has held its edge well, but it would clearly chip if hit into gravel or an unexpected very hard surface or material. In addition, I recommend wrapping the wood in a tire or strap to stop the pieces from flying. This will stop you from having to bend over so often to pick up the pieces.In summary, this has been a great product that does what it is supposed to do very well. The multitude of positive reviews will attest to this. It is a superb product with a great warranty from a reputable company. If you need an ax or maul for log splitting, I see no reason not to buy this product.

In case anyone doesn't know - Fiskars owns Gerber. I love Gerber, some people do some people don't. Fiskars produces amazing, Finnish-made outstanding products. (I have a Finnish rifle, it's amazing) ... This axe is perfect for what it's made for ... whether that's Backpacking, throwing it in an Emergency Bag or In Case Of Emergency, keeping in a vehicle, or any situation where you need an extremely sharp, well-made, useful "Small Axe" ... and again - whether that's campfires in your back yard or camping trip, a vacation into the backwoods, or an emergency situation ... it's made of very good steel, it's very sharp BUT ALSO very durable , while at the same time being relatively easy to sharpen ... it's a great little axe (and it's not that little - the Gerber Hatchet is MUCH SMALLER, which might be right up your alley depending on your needs & wants etc.) and a great price. Highly Recommended!
Awesome splitting axe! NOT the same as the 28” black version!
This is just the right size for me, and it splits like a champ. A straight over head chop is easily controlled, and the weighted head is heavy enough to provide the extra downward force, even with fresh green rounds! I started with the 28” chopper from fiskars, reading that the choppers would be sharp enough to cut through the wet fibres of green rounds, but the head was too light and required alot of over should swings to get a single split. Fiskars splitters are really sharp, unlike regular splitters, so with the added weight it provides a great combo for cutting and splitting at the same time.I’ve read a lot of reviews that the X27 is the best and safest due to its length, but I felt it was too awkward to swing, resulting in way less control. X25 has the same splitting head and shorter shaft that is easier to wield for my size (5’10”).NOTE: this axe is NOT the same as the full black 28” splitter from fiskars. The internet is riddled with posts stating it’s the same but with updated black styling, that is FALSE. The head is a 2lb head like the chopper, so it’s too light for splitting. The X25 is a 4lb head with a 28” shaft. That’s a big difference in downward force. I believe the misconception comes from the 32” all black splitter also having a 4lb head like the X27, which is more popular, so people assumed the whole black line up splitters was the same as the orange/black X series! Even vendors have incorrect weights posted which further adds confusion! I originally bought the 28” splitter since it was available at my local hardware store and was so disappointed since it was basically the same as my chopper, only with a slight flare. After I got this version did I feel the difference!Hope this helps anyone wondering if the 28” black splitter from fiskars is the same as this orange/black version!
