2.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, not sure yet on the execution
Firstly, my use for this - We do White Dove Releases for (Primarily) funerals. As such, there is always an oration introducing the doves, and a prayer if applicable. A family member often adds a few words, we (my wife and I) will sometimes perform the committal service, and often a song or two is also desired. We need to be portable, the USB power is important, and absolutely reliable.Unit arrived well packaged, and seemed to work OK at first glance. First default noted was a definite hum when a USB stick was inserted, and the unit powered from out Alesis Transactive Wireless speakers (we have four, and usually use at two at a typical release). Usable in a "normal" gathering, not so much in a quiet attentive group. I purchased a power bank to operate the unit instead, and trying to conserve it's battery, found that the mixer does NOT have an on/off switch, it is live all of the time.Next issue - one of the mics was cutting in and out - OK, I will replace it, and just use the others for the days' service. Unit performed well. We had two services the next day, it worked well for the first service, halfway through the second, the mic I was using started to give up, and by the end of the oration, I basically had no PA. Played with it the next day, bought and tried rechargable batteries, with no success. I should note that battery level showed good. At that time the replacement arrived, all of the mics (4 total) worked with the new box, none with the old box, so definitely the console itself. The mics themselves feel a bit flimsy, not sure how they will hold up. The on/off button is hard to use, and I can see it being impossible with gloves on in winter. They are also extremely directional - you need to have the mic almost exactly aligned with your mouth, and touching your lips. OK for us, but not good to hand to a casual user. The USB player is a little odd - no shuffle or repeat/single play settings available. No real track information available either. Not a real problem for us - I usually go out to a service with a few USB sticks - there is ONE only song on each stick - saves on mistakes. I did notice a couple of times when I inserted a stick it did not play - I needed to remove and re-insert the stick before it would start, but usable once you learned it's quirks. We also have customers wishing to bluetooth their own songs to our system - connection is OK, sound is fine, but range is very limited, maybe 20 feet or so before it drops out, and an intervening object will also cause a dropout. The microphone gain controls are a bit funny, also. There is no separate gain controls for the two wireless mics, they seem to share a gain control, and this in turn seems to be downstream of the gain control for the wired mic. It's WORKABLE, but defeats some of the purpose of having a mixer board. I could use another input for the wired mic, but pretty well all of my stuff is XLR, and there is only the one XLR input. A long term might be to ditch the supplied wireless mics, buy something better, and use the other inputs. Again, this somewhat defeats the purpose of an all-in-one - I am not a sound guy, this is just an added facet to my main business, and if the set-up gets too complicated each time - we are only setting up for 5-10 minute services, normally, we need to ditch the whole thing.Overall, I like the product concept. I am dubious as to the reliability and longevity - build quality does not look that great. It would be easy to buy a backup, but really we are already hauling a lot of gear, and I worry mostly about a failure in the middle of a service. I would have cheerfully paid two to three times the cost of this for a more professional item, and still will if I can find something. Oh, and - there are three immediately obvious typos on the box - makes you wonder on the quality of the item inside, when the manufacturer does not even proof-read their packaging.EDIT: OK, third time I went to use this, one microphone was cutting out, switched to the other, and it seemed that I was losing volume throughout the service. Returned it, and replaced with another. Again, worked great the first time out, then the mics both failed, and I reverted to a wired mic. It is now unavailable, so I am unable to replace again - one of these that worked reliably would be great.
3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to do.
World pretty good for the price and I've been using it for months now with no hiccups. Thank God I love the sound of my own voice.
