Someone asked why I didn't just spend the extra money (not much more considering this one is already a bit spendy) and get the MannKind one (not sure if that is the name). And I thought about it but something about spending over $200 before shipping and taxes on a pepper grinder annoyed me, and I KNOW the HexClad brand. Another reason is because while my favorite professional famous chef touts her Pepper Mate - it is to me a literal piece of junk. And that is where I will start with why I absolutely love this pepper mill.A) It is DUR-A-BLE!!! It is heavy, it is stout, it is the ultimate weapon against peppercorns, and it will not back down. I have used cute, matchy, fun, "professional" and highly regarded peppermills and went back to the old grocery store McCormick. But I got so tired of 20-50 turns of the little beasts just to get enough pepper on my salads, I realized I would save so much more time, energy and yes - money - if I just did real research and found a peppermill I could cherish and work WITH me while I create such amazing dishes as my famous The "TSFGIABWABORSASWYG" - ("Throw some fresh greens in a bowl with a bunch of random stuff and see what you get"). Delicious!! ;)When I tell you I was obsessed with research before making my decision, I am not exaggerating. I watched YouTube videos (at least 30+), I read Food, Kitchen, and Chef articles, I made a File in my file system for various Peppermill reviews and even came up with an excel spreadsheet (no - just kidding, I only started to, but my better half stepped in...LOL) It got to the point to where that when I finally received this peppermill, I wrapped it up and gave to my husband as a gift - a gift of peace and quiet about a S$#@& peppermill.Compared to others I have tried; one problem I found is how many times you have to turn the knob to get a sufficient amount of pepper. This one - depending on how much you like pepper - can give the avg person the perfect amount for a dish with one turn. I LOVE lots of pepper and I am MORE THAN happy with 2 turns.Another is how you plan on applying pepper - directly from the mill or with a pinch or two? The problem with the Pepper Mate is it is a flimsy plastic, hard to detach piece that wastes all your pepper by flying out of the compartment all over your kitchen and with it - it can hardly stay stable on a countertop - all that work you just did to grind your pepper. Annoying. This peppermill is so sturdy. I can either remove the magnetized bowl/compartment from the bottom and grind directly on top of my dish, or I grind the pepper with the compartment on, remove it (PTSD makes me do it still carefully) and use pinches or tsps. as needed. The compartment is deep, only attached by a good magnet system, and the entire thing is made of steel (I think), so the ground pepper doesn't go flying out of the compartment. The coarseness is on point for the lowest setting (Coarse) to highest (Fine) and everywhere in between. Though I use mine somewhere in the bottom third of the way 95% of the time anyway.I wanted to stop wasting time and money on grocery store peppermills, one that wasn't reviewed by paid national reviewers, but I wanted one that I could have for the rest of my life and one that was manual. Simple, durable, and one that actual amateur, unpaid home cooks reviewed, and it had to last. This pepper mill is worthy every single penny.
5.0 out of 5 stars Military grade
This set is heavy duty, heavy and durable. This set is very expensive, well made and very useful.. They grind very large amounts of salt and/or pepper very quickly. The tops are slightly hard to turn when in use. The user should carefully shake the unit after grinding to insure that all the ground particles have left the shaker. The bottom covers seem silly to me, and not practical during daily use. My best suggestion for their use is with an outdoor patio kitchen - unbreakable and capable of servicing large amounts of food.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best pepper mill
It’s not inexpensive, but will last a lifetime. The choice of grinds is great. You could probably use it as a weapon also. I would 100% recommend this product
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality
I was hesitant about purchasing due to the price, but was able to cath these on sale. They are very well made out of heavy solid machined aluminum with stainless steel fasteners and of course ceramic grinding cones. They grind pepper and salt very fast, faster than similarly priced electric grinders that a friend has, they handle larger salt crystals with ease and are very easy to fill, as well as having a decent capacity. Not sure I could bring myself to pay full price for these even though I love them, but getting them on sale makes them a great addition to my kitchen.
5.0 out of 5 stars I wanted the money is no object best, and I’m glad I bought these
-First, wanted to replace my electronic grinders, because they take way too long to grind. This is one of those rare products, like citrus juicers, where the manual product is far superior to the electric.-Strongly considered MannKitchen, until a side by side review video convinced me that HexClad had easily equivalent performance and build quality, possibly a better grip, and at nearly half the price. I’m convinced that MannKitchen was able to justify the $200 price tag as the first to market on an innovative pepper grinder design, is currently capitalizing on that early brand recognition they’ve built to continue asking for that price, and will either need to reduce price or come out with another innovation due to HexClad entering the market with an easily equivalent product at a competitive price.-What I like about the HexClad product:—Output speed - exceeds expectations on why I wanted to purchase.—Build quality and attention to detail - from the quality of the metal parts, to how smooth it turns, to little details like the bearings that help smoothly snap the bottom section to the grinder. This is a very well thought out grinder.I have a tendency to try to buy the best of the best products up front, because I know I will easily get frustrated with the product and eventually buy the best anyway. I honestly can’t think of anything else I would want now or in the future in a pepper and salt grinder. I know there are cheaper grinders on the market, but this does seem like the type of product you buy once and just never consider buying again.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hex Clad salt mill
This salt mill is awesome. I use it for Himalayan Pink Salt and it is lasting. Prior 2 mills of other brands have broken and this one is going strong. It is pricey, but it just plain works. You get what you pay for.
5.0 out of 5 stars They work flawless
They are strong, high capacity load, sturdiness, easy to use, they are heavy which I like. The quality is amazing. What a great product
4.0 out of 5 stars Almost love
Love how heavy duty and sleek looking they are. They work wonderfully. I gave onlyn4 stars because my salt grinder started to rust on bottom where the salt size can be adjusted.
The best
We love this pepper grinder! After years of trying lesser options, we found this one and are happy. It gets a lot of pepper ground quickly.
Delighted
Great pepper grinder. Robust and professional. Excellent range from fine to coarse. Easy to fill. Great magnetic base to capture those little grinds.Expensive but love the quality, style and results.
Very best pepper mill
With 6 pepper mills in the kitchen already so had a hard time justifying this pricey purchase. Thought had bought the best quality before although not satisfied with any of them. Always buy the best tools so treated myself to this mill. Out of the package fell in love with it. Felt the quality and mill spun with no friction. Loaded with Tellicherry corns and the first crank brought a huge smile to my face. The flow was unlike anything have seen including power mills. The grind, spread and quantity was perfect.Only thing would change on it is they have a cap on the bottom which uses an O ring to friction fit it. Stiff, would have used a magnet keep on it.If you want quality that you will have for life, there is no second in my opinion. Totally surprised me.
Incredible Pepper Mill
I’ve been looking for years for the Bentley of pepper mills, and I’ve finally found it! Worth every penny, so so well made. It has good weight and you can tell the file under is made to last for years and years.Highly recommend some nice tellicherry peppercorns!! Game changer!
Get a lot of pepper quickly
I love using pepper in almost every dish, and nothing is better then freshly ground pepper. I am using this with a four peppercorn blend and the consistency is top notch. I would highly recommend this product if you have $180 to splurge. Now to see if I can get the Salt Mill in Canada for the same price.
