The Speedlite EL-5 is a newly designed flash that carries over many features from the flagship Speedlite EL-1 with some modern features all its own. For example, the EL-5 uses the same high-capacity LP-EL rechargeable battery. This upgrade alone gives the EL-5 the ability to perform better than any Canon AA-battery powered flash. With this new power, at full manual flash power, you get a recycle time of 1.2 seconds, and up to 350 flashes on a single battery charge. Since the EL-5 does not have an internal fan, all of that power is being used to recycle and fire the flash. Another feature brought over from the EL-1 is the joystick and selection dial so you can effortlessly operate this flash quickly, even while shooting. Additionally, the new Multi-function connector at the EL-5’s “foot” enables advanced communications on cameras equipped with a multi-function shoe.* You can adjust settings for your flash right on your camera touch LCD. Important: because of the transition to Canon’s Multi-function accessory shoe, please be aware that Speedlite EL-5 cannot be mounted or used on Canon cameras with other accessory shoe designs.

Excellent flash if the battery retains charge. Bought one but the battery in that flash drained to unusable level in a day. Returned that and reordered. The new one is fine. Even after taking about 50 pics in darkness and leaving the battery in the flash, it still shows 85% after 5 days. So, if you experience battery issues, get a different piece.Will only work with the newest cameras due to the new interface. Also, need a good diffuser, none available now.

This flash looked amazing but I sadly realized that it didn’t work on my Canon R5 after I received it and tried it. It is not compatible with the R5. I don’t know how I missed that. I have returned it last week and waiting on my refund.
1.0 out of 5 stars Constantly loses link with wireless transmitter.
A few months back, I purchased an ST-E10 wireless transmitter as an accessory to my Canon EOS R6 mark II to trigger two EX-430 III RTs wirelessly. I was using a third-party trigger before this and constantly losing links with—the flashes. The new trigger did not solve the issue, so I purchased this Canon EL-5 flash to see if it was the old EX430s. Unfortunately, the link drops continue, occurring about two to three minutes after the link is established. Performing a spectrum scan does not solve the issue, and looking for free channels using third-party apps does not help either. Online searches reveal this is a generalized problem with the RT protocol. With no acknowledgment or support from Canon and no solution, this flash cannot be recommended. If you want an on-camera flash, cheap third-party options are available. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this unit, and I will return it soon.

This product does not come with a charger for its lithium battery. Product is inop out of the box. Battery is not even partially charged. Ordered the product because the Canon EOS R50 required a special shoe for an external flash. Did not have many choices to choose from for an external flash. Selected a Canon flash for a Canon camera. Canon is too cheap to include a charger.

I've owed several Canon and generic flashes over the years. The generics had horrible recharge speed and terrible control menus. The Canons had the horrible menus and a steep price. This solves much of that. The new proprietary battery is fantastic...even if I don't have a backup at the moment and a second will cost me. But what it does have is a great feeling of quality, menu improvement, control and the ability to fire it multiple times very quickly. It's not a perfect flash as I still think the menu system needs an overhaul but its very nice and I'm happy to take this with me vs. previous versions.

This is one of the top-rated flashes, and is designed to be used at different angles without holding the camera at awkward angles. Definitely would buy it again.

I purchased unit this with the ST-10 transmitter. The setup was simple and integration with my R6mII is an enjoyable experience. There is no screen on the ST-10. You just push a button, and the control panel pops up on the back of the camera with all of the controls and features you could ask for. Top notch. The flash output and recycle time was better than any other speedlite I have ever owned.As soon as I got it set up, the problems started. I took a picture or two and then no flash! I reset the flash by turning off both units and turning them back on and they instantly reconnect right where they left off... and then drop again. Sometimes immediately and sometimes after a few minutes; but they ALWAYS drop. This is incredibly frustrating and even more so since all you need to do to get them working again is turn them off and then on. It seems to me that the RF units ought to be able to detect the drop and do this little dance automatically, but I guess that is too hard.It is really too bad that this problem has been identified and complained about for about 3 years (dating back to early 2000 with previous Canon speedlites) and there is no solution forthcoming; so, beware. The struggle is real!

Not much to say, I have been using this with my R8 and it works great! I use the ST-E10 transmitter with no issues. I was a bit let down there was no charged, but it does at least come with a battery.

Powerful Flash with Battery Drain Caveat
The Speedlight is awesome, but I found a common issue with fast battery draining both for myself and on the internet. (For instance, a fully charged battery can be completely drained within 24 hours even when the unit is switched off).I tried to resolve the issue by contacting Canon to see if it could be fixed with a firmware update or any other solution. I also attempted using a brand new battery, but encountered the same problem.Ultimately, I decided to return the Speedlight and ordered a new one directly from Canon. They provided a discount to compensate for the inconvenience and the issue. The new Speedlight is holding its charge just fine; for instance, it only dropped from 98% to 90% over the course of 3 days.I would recommend the Speedlight, but I suggest conducting a test upon receipt and promptly replacing it if you receive a defective unit.
