I've always had to substitute brown sugar for the jaggery listed in the middle eastern and Indian recipes that I make. But now I can use the real deal. This jaggery is herbal jaggery and in addition to the sugarcane, it contains Indian amla, dry ginger, pepper, sweet basil, betel leaf, cardamom, holy basil, borage, climbing brinjal, and senna flower. A taste test reveals a complex sweetness - none of the added herbs seem to dominate and simply add some depth to the overall flavor. Jaggery is much less processed than other sugars and is less sweet. It has some similarity to regular brown sugar but doesn't compress or pack down like brown sugar. The jaggery that I received was produced 9/23 and the packaging says it will remain usable for 24 months. I'm quite excited to try this jaggery in my cooking. Often, it is the subtleties of the ingredients that make for an authentic experience.

This Danodia Foods Organic Brown Jaggery Powder (2.2 Pounds) is a natural sweetener that is considered healthier than standard sugar. It contains vitamins and minerals that make it nutritionally better than most sweeteners. The look and feel is like soft brown sugar. It has a stronger scent but that wasn't noticeable while eating it. Use it like any other sweetener. Recommend!!
